The fear is overwhelming
@clonkex8 жыл бұрын
I was utterly terrified about doing this, and every time I tried to do it I couldn't fully commit and the board would slide out from under me. Eventually I realised that it's less about slamming your front wheels down and more about shifting your weight very quickly to your front foot. Don't just "roll" your weight forwards, kinda jump forwards slightly, so that even when you're doing the practice step on the flat your tail doesn't leave the ground until your weight is fully forwards. Today I went from being too terrified to try dropping in, to being able to confidently drop in on banks (ran outta time to learn quarterpipes). My first step was flatground. Stand on the tail with your back foot, put your front foot near or on the bolts, start to lean forwards with your weight still on your tail, "jump" your weight forward onto your front foot causing the wheels to slam pretty hard. Once you have that down, find the _bottom_ of a quarterpipe and put *only* your back wheels on it, a few inches up the ramp. Then do exactly the same thing as on the flat. You're only like 3 inches off the ground so you can't die, so just go for it. If the board slides forward as soon as you try to start, you're not keeping your weight on your back foot. Keep practising until you can slam your wheels down and roll away without the tail sliding forward. Now go find a nice shallow bank, one you're confident to just roll down without dropping in. Stand back from the edge, do the same flatground practice step and roll down the bank. Stay leaning forwards when you do this. Now put just your front wheels over the edge, only a couple of inches, and do it again. This is where you may start to feel the fear come back, but just remember you can roll down this bank already, and slamming your front wheels down just over the edge will not increase your speed. Just think, "it's the same as flatground". If you can do this step you're golden. Go back up the bank, put your front wheels over the edge again, a bit further, and drop in again. Once you can do that, you should be ready to try dropping in for real with all wheels over the edge of the bank. Just go for it. It truly is way easier than it seems. Hopefully that random instructional comment will help someone :P

Thanks. 43 yrs old, just learned to drop-in today (about 3-4 feet concrete bowl). The pretending to grab the nose did it! It's all mental. Next rock'n'rolls and tail stalls. I got somehow rock to fakies and axle stalls already. Also, I can carve/pump the corners and carve grind small bowls ok (no one seem to do that by the way - too old school?)...stoked to try that on bigger bowls/pools with drop ins, 70s style, heh. Pads might be a good idea at this age I guess? :)

Thanks. Just dropped to a full-size plywood bowl (maybe 6' at the lower end) couple of weeks ago. Been riding the bowl mostly. I guess at this age the carving thing just somehow attracts. Still suck at rock'n'rolls and tail stalls..need to work on those in the summer (= smaller park stuff). Just bought a BIG Alva 34x11 pool board...now going to concentrate on the speed and carves (and eventually working my way to carve grinds on the lip). Stoked - lots of old farts on the local pool, good times!

I did my first drop in today I found a secret You know how Aaron teaches tricks by landing with one foot on the board? Try a drop in, but run out of it as your front wheels hit the ramp, it builds amazing confidence, and it lets you get used to the sudden transition of leaning forward Once you got this down, all you gotta do is put your back foot on there and stay on the board

I’m very grateful for people like him and Aaron for helping and giving other skaters confidence, thank you. 🙏🏼
@sk8theory1493 жыл бұрын
Dropped in for the first time yesterday! Didn't have a bank to practice on, but at least the miniramp was small (about 1 m). Another piece of advice: don't keep your knees too loose (they shouldn't be stiff either though)! Even after committing, I often ended up falling and kneesliding after already making it all the way through the transition, because I had no stability, and it threw me off once I reached the flat. When I get back there (hopefully some time next week), I'm gonna have to work on keeping my legs more stable.
@HairByAriiianna7 жыл бұрын
As a former gymnast, fully committing is the number one thing to remember in my opinion. I just recently began to learn how to skate and one of the first times I was on my board I got scared pushing off, kept all my weight on my back foot and the board shot out from under me. I haven't learned completely how to drop in but I'll definitely keep these tips in mind.

Update #2. So I finally dropped like a boss. My mistake was ofc not leaning forward enough. But I figured how to understand when you are ready for a 1.5 ramp or not. The thing is you have to be super comfortable with your small ramp drops. When you think you already have a good drop on a mini ramp and its time to find a bigger rampf... dont rush, give few more days... be 110% comfortable with yourself.

I'm 31 and about to pick up skating again. Skated from 12 to about 21 but only skated ledges and gaps and flat ground because I never had the confidence for dropping in on transitions. Now that I want to look after my knees a bit more, I really want to skate mini ramps and bowls. This has given me a bit of confidence to go and drop in on the shallow quarter pipes at my local park. Cheers!

Okay, I'm going to share how I dropped in for the first time. I have always been scared of dropping in. But it's ALL and i mean ALL about commitment. And for me to do that. I just said 'YOLO' and dropped in. No injuries. It's just about committing and slamming the front foot down and you'll be fine. :D

He's absolutely right with everything he says here. I practiced dropping in on some banks today and there were a few times I didn't put my weight forward enough or didn't commit and those were the only times that I fell. Thanks to me not commiting, I have a hurt foot but I eventually DID get it and you HAVE to go forward to pull it off. Once you DO get it though, you've got it.

+zobieandme I know what you mean, I've got a lot more confidence if I'm skateboarding on wood, not concrete. If you fall on wood is doesn't hurt that much, but when you fall on concrete, ouch. I mean asphalt in stead of concrete. Not only dropping in on wood, everything feels safer on wood
@FartMcGwire9 жыл бұрын
+Varizon it's really not that different lol

Dropping in is 99% mental game. It can be tough to overcome the fear but once you do youll never fear again.
@mysteretsym7 жыл бұрын
shwben - concrete is harder than wood. It can definitely give you more confidence and it will definitely hurt less.

James Fox what did you roll off a bank? If you dont put your body down youll fall on your ass and the board will shoot out. Your body has to stay perpendicular to the ramp
