So nice to see a drummer with real rhythm and feel, there are a lot of good vids on here but majority are all human metronomes with some technique but not a lot of grove or feel, you make it look effortless and sound full, rich and melodic at the same time....respect

used to play in bands in my younger years but time passes and my kit sent from sitting in the basement to being packed away for 7 years. after seeing your video it made me realize all the joy I felt playing. I think its time to bring it out, dust it off and start playing again. thank you sir.

It's been forty years since I played and I just found an intermediate set of Ludwig drums to play. Having had two shoulder surgeries my coordination is obviously affected, but I'm having fun, still have the beat and found your videos which were informative and that I plan to incorporate into my ad-lib an rehab. Good stuff you have provided and much appreciated!.... Mike

THANK YOU for putting in the bit about the 5 stroke roll. its such a versatile little ditty that seems to be over shadowed when drummers decided to just play fast straight single stroke rolls around the kit. It's so subtle and add so much density.

@CRazyCKoper I use Vic Firth Danny Carey model, and Dave Weckl model (red sticks). For a while I just used the Weckl sticks for everything, but recently have included the heavier sticks and for some reason the shape of the Danny Carey sticks fits my hands well.

Thank you for sharing this. I am a professional drummer and learned the intuitive way by listening and playing along records, but I find these steps a universal and methodical résumé that anyone can approach with its own taste and skills. I would suggest a topic on frasing and sound as well. It's one of those hard to explain things, but maybe you now how to approach these subjects... Grtz!!

How instructive, but what a pleasure watching an expert at teaching drums, and in the art of communication. Perhaps if I watch it often enough and practice at least some of those chops, I'll one day be able to sound somewhere near as relaxed and proficient as this nice gentleman.

@TVOham Thanks. I take that as a compliment, really do. A big part of my effort is to practice becoming more and more relaxed. Once I can play a difficult lick real well technically, sometimes I'll try an experiment and just practice the same lick for 20 mins or so at a slightly SLOWER tempo. Then what am I working on during that time? I'm super listening for details since all of my effort isn't just going to play it. And trying to become more relaxed with breathing and playing it each minute.

@mickeydrummer29 Yes, what a cool idea. Consider it done. I'm currently finishing part two of the "Killer rudiments for drum set" and will have it ready to post in the near future. After that, I'll do a video dedicated to soloing with double bass. I use the book, "double bass drumming" by Joe Franco in my lessons for those who love double bass, and I'll be sure to include the exact pages and how I use them in it. Good Idea. Thanks.

@xTurnipTimex Yep. I will be posting a couple of clips on fills, just the same approach as with my students. First there is the question of when to play them. I call this the "fill zone" and typically listen to the songs that they bring me together and teach them "when". Then #2 question is...."how big"...meaning......how much attention do we want to take for that fill....meaning...how long it is. Then #3 I have them start the fills on each of the eight positions possible in a measure....
@AudioSticks214

I agree my friend. I was watching an instructional video by Akira Jimbo and he was saying that growing up in Japan he might have the opportunity to see a good drummer once every 2-3 years if they came to perform. (he was taking about seeing Steve Gadd). now a days it's.........every 2-3 minutes depending on how fast the mouse can be clicked. Progress.....maybe......! ? Hope to see you around the website.

The fastest player? No, and yet you're still better then most of the quick drummers I know because you sound like more then just noise and have a very relaxed technique that allows you to be very versatile around the kit and you're a great teacher also. This is the element that most drummers are missing, creating music while showing off their quick technical skills, rather than just making noise around the toms and cymbols.

(continued) Those eight positions correspond to each eight note in a measure. (1, 1+..2..2+...3..3+...4..4+) . Then when they are competent to do any lenght of fill, the last step is how good/cool the fill can sound. For that I give a lot of examples of each length of fill. Some sound more musical then others so the goal is always to teach how to "think" in fill like terms. And we get used to doing hundreds of spontaneous fills. Then they pick 4 or 5 that they like best to perfect them.
