how to dye a carhartt jacket | using RitDye

This can be made a little easier by zipping the jacket closed around a sturdy hanger before you put it in the hot salty water to presoak before you add the dye. The hanger allows you to pull it up out of the dye to check the color or to agitate it if the dye needs help to penetrate a given area. It's also helpful if you're trying for a transition or hombre in-between two different colors.

I believe it’s bc the tag is synthetic and the dye is for natural material

for the green jacket I did, it didn’t change at all. for the purple one, it changed a little

The collar is made out of corduroy which is made from synthetic fibers. This particular rit dye only dyes natural fabrics : wool, cotton, silk. So the collar and the carhartt tag didnt take the dye because both are synthetic the logo being polyester. Depending on the lining of the inside of the jacket it shouldnt take because it most likely made from synthetic fibers

for the green jacket that I dyed it didn’t change, but for the one that I dyed purple it did dye some. I think the reason is because the jacket that I dyed purple was originally coveralls, the collar is corduroy but feels diff than the other jackets collar. So I’m assuming the dye took on the second one because the collar is made up of diff materials

Don't be surprised if the color does not come off as shown on some of these videos-I had a nice vintage Detroit jacket that I did in green-followed all the procedures and instructions and was very disappointed in my results which was not a full even color dye job-I washed and rewashed and no change-main issue was final splotchy color finish-

I am thinking that the addition of the Dawn (de greaser) possibly kept the dye from binding with full strength to the fabric possibly-and questioning why do you need to add salt-but its not like I am going to be wearing this jacket to any art gallery openings so its no big deal-also it ruined my beach towel washed with it or at least its now green @@SYDPAIGE

i was trying to figure it out first sheesh lol. the first one I dyed green the collar didn’t change. But the second jacket that I made purple did take to the dye. I’m guessing because it was originally coveralls instead of a jacket and the collar feels diff that the collar on the first jacket. Hope that makes sense

Corduroy collor is different material than main jacket

It says on the bottle why the collar would or wouldn't take the dye. It's based on fabric type. Nylon, Polyester and Acrylic sections won't take this dye and require the use of the Rit Dye More Synthetic version instead.
