My 77" LG G1 looked awful out of the box. A few hours of HDR content and a pixel refresher later, and its the cleanest OLED panel I've seen.
It may not work perfectly for all panels, but will most likely improve them a lot. You should also do this every 1000 hours or so to clear any possible pixel issues that develop over time. This also applies to Sony OLEDs.

Informative video but you should certainly not run this process too often - if the banding or retention issue does not affect your everyday viewing, then leave well alone…doing this too often will shorten the life of your panel. The 4 hour compensation cycles are enough for the vast majority of people - the main refresh process is designed to be run every 2000 hours. So if you watched TV for 5 hours per day, that’s about 1 full year between each pixel refresh process.

The grid is.a different issue. The pixel refresh can have some effect on vertical banding; however, it will not fix the grid or horizontal banding. Grid is seen mostly on panning lighter colored parts of the screen, mostly noticeable in videogames or anime. Try playing the snow level in gears 5. Look at the snow while moving. This will reveal it if you have it. Panning across a light colored sky in any game is also a good way to see.

My first OLED so not sure if it's normal but it's pretty disappointing for such an expensive TV. I have to ask. I installed in the 1980-2000 during rear projection tvs and projectors were still a thing image burn in was a big problem. When we did break in on new tvs. We aimed for uniformity. That meant an all white pattern for a time then red, green, blue over the entire screen and lastly another white screen. We did this so the phosphor would burn in uniformly. The whole screen (ie each "pixel" in this case phosphor ) would be burnt with the same color and brightness regardless of color uniformly across the entire screen. I dont understand burning in a screen with random images. Each pixel will never burn in the same with random images. Each pixel will have been burned in with a different intensity and color pallet. Another thing that is odd to me is currently people compare 2 tvs i always hear. "one tv is more saturated then the other." Back in the day we used to lower the color of overly saturated tvs to compare them. Do you guys ever adjust the tvs to look the same and then compare? Obviously certain tvs are calibrated more toward red or blue but why not adjust color if its too saturated. Sorry for the long questions.

I’m just a guy who wanted to replace my 14 year old plasma. I had never heard of banding before about 3 hours ago. I read a lot of reviews (none of which mentioned this issue) about the various models of oleds agonized over my choice and bought one. I’m really not picky but my first day watching this tv I turned on some golf. There was an obvious @ 2 inch band top to bottom that was a different shade of green. Went through different content and different sources yes it’s the panel. I see the appeal. If not for the banding the picture would be great but this is an unacceptable flaw in this technology. I remember how blown away I was when I got my plasma. This is disappointing. Getting rid of “almost all” of this defect isn’t going to work for me. Back to the store it goes.

I was extremely skeptical, but at least wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. Seems it actually does work for this kind of issue at least. I’ve had similar issues like crosshatch pattern on block colors that this solved nothing for but I started tje pixel cleaning a bit too early and stopped it 5-10 minutes in, I could already see a huge difference in banding and weird lines. Like they all got smudged out. Now I’m watching HDR demos and planning to use the full cycle of pixel cleaning, I really hope it’s perfect when it’s done. I was getting so damn fed up and tired because I had to spend 40 hours troubleshooting a new laptop as well just a few days ago, just thinking ”why can’t things just f*cking work, do I have to spend time and effort to pack it, drive it back and exchange it and then repeat the process?”. But now it seems I can sleep well and expect a flawless display tomorrow. Thank you.

Damn. Yeah, this really works for this particular issue. The first round of hdr and manual refresh actually fixed a lot of it. Before, I could see it even on other colors, even when it was mixed. Was dying a bit inside. After the first one, it got a lot leas noticeable. Still had a fair bit of smudging though, enough to annoy me but not be distracting during normal use. So, I went for anothe round. This time I used a more extreme video non-hdr but with max contrast and brightness and vivid mode on. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqXUhax8gKyeoMUsi=ukS8spQeTwp0Kehz 3 hours of that, just let it run. Then I did another manual pixel refresh, it’s not as bad as people make it out to be, LG recommends using it regularly, it even says right under the button on newer oleds. Don’t overdo it, but using it every once in a while isn’t that bad. Anyway, after that, my grays are almost completely uniform. I notice some level of smudging at the lower part if I focus and the entire screen is completely gray but mostly around 1-10% gray. Above that, you can hardly notice it anymore and at 20% I see nothing. I honestly think I lucked out on the panel lottery except for the initial scare. Who knows, the smudging might get even less noticeable with use, but not going to run more pixel refreshes for a while. Now I only hope it will keep this level of quality for several years.

Hi Classy. Isn't this a liitle radical for banding? Some users say it will go away without the manual pixel refresh after 200hours of usage or so. I have a new G1 for gaming, 10 hours usage so far and haven't run any test patterns yet, lovin it so far, a little pink tint from angle viewing, not noticeable in normal gaming, but.... have only seen a banding issue at the sun in Ghost of tsushima until I tested Gran Turismo Sport with it. Completely distorted and full of waving stairs in one scenario. Good way to test your display I think... When you are creating a livery, you can change the background where the car is placed into black, outside, or white, which is more gray than white. On this white background....if you rotate the camera...oh my god...circle banding on the ground around the car and the background is full of waves with different color steps 😳 will it go away after some time or should I do the manual refresh? Thx!

Does that mean that the tv dimmed all other pixels in order to level it the level of the sun area ? Am I just being paranoid. ? I have limited time to to return tbh so a fast answer would help. Did this permanent dim my screen? Again I honestly see no difference , but I need to be sure since the price . Thanks so much , im confused as to how refresh works . Especially after sun . Hey classy! I’m so relieved I’ve just found this vid, I have just got an A95L two weeks ago and today I decided to give it a dust with a microfibre, I then noticed while it was off just to the right of the middle of the screen a very faint thin black line running doing from the top half way down, you can only see it looking from left to right and not centre or right to the left, I really thought my tv was broken and waited 3 months for it to turn up. Can I just ask the pixel cleaner says only do it once a year, and I called Sony store and asked if it was safe and they said don’t do it? Just wanted to ask if it was ok to do this? Thanks man.

Hey Classy, man I truly enjoy your content, thank you for sharing your knowledge. It is much appreciated. Perhaps you can help me decide on a LG G1 as oppose to a Sony A90J. I do understand that the Sony is pricey... My tv viewing is, streaming movies & tv shows(Nvidia Shield), Playstation 5 (MLB The Show 21 soon to be 22), a little Call of Duty and standard cable viewing at 1080i. I love Sony's processing, but spending about $2600 on a tv hurts. lol. So, I wanted to know in your opinion would someone like me who loves Sony so much, be happy with the G1. I like the fact that LG G1 has that 5 yr warranty (Big Plus). Based on my viewing preferences... And I totally understand, that this is all subjective. I would like to hear or in this case read on some of the things to consider in buy an LG G1... Any and all feed back would be greatly appreciated. I see that you are very passionate about this subject, and if am not not mistaken you have your ISF certification. There isn't a TV out there that doesn't have at least one flaw in uniformity. Those that are fine in 1-15% grey have pink tinting or vignetting, if they don't have this then they have DSE or heavy image retention... I see these types of TV daily at the office and only TV I've seen with 100% uniformity in the greyscale was a Sony yet it had vignetting in the yellows and had horizontal lines across the screen in every type of content! You can either just deal with it and be happy with what you have or you can keep playing panel lottery to only have better uniformity in one colour but there may be another issue! Last thing I'll say is this, I have had several OLEDs (currently personally own a C and G1) and several QLEDS, plasmas, CRT etc etc and not a single one has been perfect. I hope this helps you cope with it and as long as it's not noticeable in normal viewing content just try to deal with it as you're just playing the panel lottery to which you'll almost certainly loose my friend. 👍

Do all new panels suffer from this? If only a few suffer from this then I'm sending mine back, I'm not prepared to pay the pricetag of a 77" OLED to have in some senses a worse ummage than my 5 year old budget LCD I paid 1/5th the price for. I just unboxed my brand new 77" CX and it's has very pronounced banding which after about 5 hours of use is still extremely visible.

I do slides if I'm sleeping or going to be gone for more than a few hours. Otherwise I do HDR videos on KZbin or UHD BluRay (Planet Earth, etc). HDR gets brighter and the panel warmer. Order doesn't matter, just keep it varied. Try not to use the demos where most the screen is black. I don't let KZbin play over night as I don't know what it will choose to auto play.
