I haven't tried herbs in the foil trays. But that looks so easy I think I must try. 😉 For small seeded plants, like herbs - I put my seeds in relatively moist soil (not saturated), then mist the tops only (as needed) with water until germination. Once their first leaves are up, I convert to bottom watering. Great success this way. Cilantro - for me, I cannot get them to germinate well unless I gently crack the pods. I've been doing that for 2 years now and have cilantro coming out of my ears. To be clear, I don't break them - just a light "crack".

Girl, you didn’t mention about lighting. How long do you leave the lights on? What time are they on? What time are they off? Very good video. Thank you.
@jaytoney3007
@jaytoney3007 13 күн бұрын
I leave mine on for sixteen hours a day, starting at 7:00 A.M. It is low intensity light, 5000 lumens, 6500 Kelvin, so the plants need longer hours of exposure. Natural sunlight is much brighter, so the plants need fewer hours.

Hi Gary, thank you so much for all your videos. How many holes should we put in the bottom of the baking tray? Or just as many as seems reasonable? Love the idea. I swear birds must eat all my coriander seeds when i plant them direct. 🌿

6-9 holes works well. Big enough so soil doesnt block them. This work well for cilantro. Love all you share, Gary. I was just thinking of seed starting basil and I know it's a bit soon for Marietta GA but thought I would pot up if necessary. What do you think about that?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 13 күн бұрын
You can grow it indoors in a larger pot for sure. It's a nice indoor herb if you give it a good drying period between watering. Just let the top of the soil dry.

Round one of seed starts on the heat mat is complete, onions, All Seasons Cabbage, Dutch Cabbage, Waltham Broccoli, Calabrese Broccoli, and Self-Blanching Cauliflower. I have a lot of seeds sprouting on my heat mat, Red Burgundy Onions, Yellow Potato Onions, Waltham Broccoli, Red Rock Mammoth Cabbage, Jolene Tomatoes, Cubanelle peppers, Sweet Banana peppers, Hungarian Yellow Wax peppers, Lipstick peppers, Big Red bell peppers, and Lunchbox Orange peppers. I work the seed cells off the heat mat as soon as I can, and rotate fresh seeds onto it. To complete round two, I need to start seeds for Corona di Toro peppers, basil, dill, cilantro, Marjoram, and Oregano. Round three will be leafy greens and flowers. For leafy greens, I’ll do seed starts for Tokyo Bekana Mustard, Fordhook Swiss Chard, Pak Choi (Boc Choy), Romaine lettuce, and mixed assorted leaf lettuces. For flowers, I’ll do seed starts for marigolds, purple cone flower, cosmos, Amaranth, Alyssum, butterfly flower, butterfly weed, and zinnias. After that, I still have a lot to direct sow. I haven’t figured out where, but it won’t be in my raised beds, I am planting Russian Mammoth Sunflowers for my chickens. It won’t be until spring, so I hope the deer leave them alone. I chased a large buck out of my garden shortly after 5:00 P.M. this evening. They are getting bold, and coming into the garden earlier. I harvested parsnips today. The soil was still half frozen, but workable after Friday’s snow storm. They were a pain to pull up. I had to remove large chunks of ice to do it. I am only doing a half dozen each day, so I can feed the greens to my hens. Ariel laid her first egg yesterday. It is about time she started laying! Anyway, I got beautiful white roots between twelve and eighteen inches long. I’ve never eaten parsnip, so have no idea how I am going to cook them, or if I will like them. I’m thinking for my first batch, I’ll oven roast them, and drizzle honey on them. Then I’ll try them mashed. If worse comes to worse, and I don’t like them, I’ll use then in stews, or feed them to the chickens. Even though my garden has been through a snow storm, and with another one coming next week, my garden is still producing. I still have chard, carrots, and parsnips in the ground. It won’t be long before I start transplanting seedlings, and sowing seeds for snow peas, shelling peas, radish, turnip, golden beets, Danvers carrots, and parsnips-if I decide I like them. If not, more carrots. Maybe next year, I’ll add celery to my garden? I'm getting my timing figured out. Raised beds that were used for single crops, i.e. my tomato beds, are now multi use beds, for at least three seasons. My garden is going to be scary big this year, without adding more raised beds. I figure, maybe a forty percent yield over last year, and last year my garden produced a lot. I had a bumper crop of tomatoes and peppers. Every year, it keeps getting better and better. This year's experiment is going to be a shoot off between Round Zucchini, Grey Zucchini, Gold Zucchini, and Italian Striped Zucchini to see which two produce the best.

Are you using heat mats for these herbs or just lights? I like the idea of the foil trays…I’ve used the cheap trays that come with plastic cells, and it doesn’t take much to end up with a watery mess. Now I try to use something a bit sturdier…I don’t want to invest in the high priced cell trays that are said to last forever at this stage of the game, but I would if I were 25 years younger 😊 looking forward to all your growing videos Happy Growing 2025👨‍🌾💚
