I just revived an 041 and am impressed by how tough the old ones are. The only plastic is in the caps. One stud on a bigger saw is a fail. Good job getting that stud out.

Dont buy the mastercraft kit... You should buy brand like Irwin they are way better built

@@frederickjuneau7874 that particular MasterCraft kit is meant for stripped screw heads. It is quite decent quality. I had not thought of using it for an application like this. I think the key is having a good feel for all of the materials involved.

If you drilled the stud out completely if it would come out & then used a Heli Coil kit you might be able to save the case.

Nice clean repair! Thanks for showing the proper way to achieve such things. By the way, WD40 makes quite a good cutting fluid for drill bits. An old machinist taught me that, much to my surprise.

That's why the stud threads are so deep. They needed a lot of surface area for the strength of the plastic to EXCEED that of the stud. If not, then the case would break every time instead of the stud.

Well said. I would say pretty good plastic and possible metal fatigue,with only one bolt, could be factors.

Good steady hand, but generally “drill as straight as you can” means “use a drill press.” You got lucky, especially with the low buck extractor. Thanks for the video. I’ve seen enough to know not to buy this saw. I inherited a MS180C but I would never pay money for one.

Sir I had a problem with the thing-that-creates-the-electricity to power the spark plug: due to vibration, the screws came loose and started flying around the air fan. The electrical thing also scratched against the flywheel. Now, whats the best solution to lock screws? I wouldn't choose loctite because the heat from the cylinder would make it useless

About 25-years ago I bought a set of Morse left-hand (Morse calls them "reverse-flute") drill bits. That was one of the best purchases I ever made. Many times I get lucky and the drill bites in well enough to spin the broken fastener right out. Honestly, I've broken too many of the Mastercraft-style extractors (like the infamous Easy-Out) to recommend them to anyone. The extractors I've had the best luck with (besides the torch and the MIG welder) are the straight-shank type that used to made by Silver & Deming.

You were lucky. MS 290, 291 and 029 have the rear bar stud that screw into the wing on the crankcase. Normally, Stihl uses some kind of Locktite green on this rear stud, meaning you ain't going to be able to remove it from the saw, period. On an 029 I actually welded the bar nut to the end of the stud. This allowed me to remove it. I then replaced the bar stud and nut but it was a lot easier than trying to get that sucker out of the saw any other way. I just put Lock time blue on the new stud and screw it back in with a single nut and a scrench and use my impact to take the nut off the stud.

Good job on extraction. Two weak points from Stihl pointed out; having only one bar stud instead of two, having the stud secured in plastic instead of s metal sleeve.

As Dony said you need a good drill bit. The extractor doesn’t have a chance if the hole isn’t any good! I have used them on manifold studs with great success.

id definitely recommend using a left hand drill bit when doing this because sometimes you get lucky and it'll come out while drilling your center hole

Nice. Something similar happened to me with my Jonsered. I just tightened the nut too much and the stud broke (the one closer to the tip of the bar, it has two). However, I took it to the repair shop and, being almost their closing time on a saturday, I thought I would have to leave it there a few days, even the owner thought so, but one of the mechanics saw it and said it was easy. Sure enough, the stud was accesssible from the oil deposit (live to learn), so he drained the deposit, removed the broken stud, put the new one and it was done in no time. If I knew that and I had the right stud, I could do it myself.

Dony, Do you have any experience with Chinese built Chainsaws? They are VERY cheap through Amazon, and with my limited usage throughout the year, it seems to serve my purpose.
