One thing i found helpful was instead of using a toothpick its much easier to use a lead pencil with a bit of lead sticking out, it gives you a lot of control and helps to get the tiny spaces

Try an eraser first, if not you should be able to acetone it off if you’re working on a non painted surface. If it is painted already you may just need to go over it

If you get dressmakers carbon rather then the regular stuff it comes in different colours so you can get it to show up on dark canvas and denim too

Regular paper makes the job a lot harder since it’s not as transparent so harder to see what you’re tracing and then where you’re placing the image... but you can still get it done

With canvas type shoes? Ugh that's what I wanted to try it on. I thought about tracing with a fine point sharpie and wetting the paper on the canvas shoe but not sure if that would work either.

Try getting something called Dressmakers Carbon Paper then put the carbon between the tracing and the shoe, making sure that the side of the paper with the colour dye is against the shoe. Then trace over the lines of your image exactly (don't just scribble all over like he did). I've never worked on canvas shoes but do use this method to get outlines onto jackets. Test it out on some scrap fabric till you get the hang of it
