Great video very realistic. I used to edge with my trimmer when I had one small lawn but that one took months of very small chipping away to get a nice clean true edge. I will say that the trimmer is better at hitting every blade of grass on an ESTABLISHED edge its just creating a great edge that is a pain. I broke down and bought an edger and its one of the best purchases i have made. It's so much more efficient and every customer gets a perfectly edged sidewalk when I pick up a new yard its an instant change.

I use a 22 year old Homelite expand it unit. The s type trimmer head was perfect for edging, I defeated the lock system by using a pipe cutter, I was then able to turn the trimmer head as an edger. I also modified the trimmer attaching a push string head unit on it.

I can see you have a practiced hand--looks easy to hold it and draw a very straight line. But I find it "harder than it looks", my line tends to not be true, but your video convinced me to give it another try, thanks.

Yeah it just takes practice. Honestly some people never do get comfortable with it, but it is worth a shot. It can save a lot of time by not switching handheld equipment for trimming and edging.
@jimquantic

I can see that too--I did in fact try it, and it came out just "OK". But I was thinking, it should not take (I don't think) too much for them to have a clip on attachment guide, that you cram into the sidewalk edge, and use that to force a straight line. Anyway, edging due today, I'll try it again, and thanks

I edge the same way and use the same model echo. Edging like that with the trimmer lowered gives more control and when you get comfortable with it you can do it fast. That echo is great, lightweight, and reliable. Though they only last me about a year. But in the long run its worth it.

Ok. I will begin by saying you are very good with your edging method. It is rare to see someone cut straight the way you do. The proper posture and stance and speed are hard to come by for most. Yet, my argument starts with the direction. Rather than standing on the pavement, you should be on the lawn to continue to go left around the entire property ( if the bed edges continue and allow you to). If lawn professionals learn this method and go slow until comfortable, there will never be another complaint about edges. Just my two cents... Keep it up. Your work looks great! - Ben

You make it look so darn easy! Thanks for the vote of confidence. Is it a good idea to take the guard off while you are edging? I'm a newbie at this and would like to know why my line breaks every 10 feet. I have to stop edging, take the spool off the trimmer, take the spool apart, re-feed the line out of the spool, replace the spool on the trimmer, go back to edging, and guess what happens in 10 more feet? Can you help me here? Thanks again.
@LansingLawnServiceLLC
@LansingLawnServiceLLC 7 жыл бұрын
Jim Whittaker you are probably using some crappy line. I use ugly line. You can get it at Lowe’s. It also depends, if you are edging really over grown edges the line will break more frequently because it is moving allot of debris. You just have to live with it until you get the edge where you want it.

It seems that it would almost be just as practical to lift up the grass on the overgrown sidewalk with a square shovel, and then chop the edge with a round point, then haul off the excess grass, and then maintain it afterwards in the future with a trimmer or an edger. It looks rough on the trimmer to do it the way the vid shows. Even so, I have done it the same way as the vid shows and it is a messy technique- the stuff flies everywhere and mostly lands on me. lol. But the vid technique does work, and you did a great job on it.

@jman3254
@jman3254 5 жыл бұрын
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC yeah, I have a blade edger too but for some reason I still use the weed eater alot to edge--- one less tool to fool with, I guess. And if a person isn't aware of how good an edger makes the edge look, they will think that the weed eater method looks really good; but I think the edger wins out--- in how it makes an edge look even more professional than a weedeater. I will even use an old manual edger sometimes on small jobs, like the slabs on some of my customer's family plots in certain graveyards, etc. Anyway keep up the good work and good to hear from ya.

I have an Echo srm 225 that I use for edging, but turning the machine side ways or upside down for a minute or 2 floods the engine or something and makes the trimmer shut down. I can eventually turn it back on after a few pulls, but it's pretty annoying. Is that normal or is something wrong with my trimmer?
@karlrovey
@karlrovey 5 жыл бұрын
I used to have that issue, but it seems to have gone away. Try shaking it every now and then while it's turned sideways and ensuring you have a mostly full tank. You're not flooding it. You're having the opposite problem. You're not getting enough fuel (if any). The problem is the fuel filter being above the fuel level and not in the fuel when you have it on its side or upside down.

1. Does it make a difference if you stand on the sidewalk or the grass when edging? 2. What does the "R" and "L" mean on the top of the inside reel? 3. I also have a SRM model. Does it make a difference if you go right to left or left to right? thanks, Gerry
@LansingLawnServiceLLC
@LansingLawnServiceLLC 2 жыл бұрын
The L and R is for left and right. It really doesn't make much of a difference if you stand in the grass or on the sidewalk. I prefer to stand on the sidewalk so I can see what I am doing better. The string feeds much better if when you load the string you are looking at the L and not the R.

Nice video for those who want to learn how to do this. .

It looks good enough bro. You should feel proud of yourself for doing it yourself. And not have to pay somone to come do it for you. Yes it takes practice, but it's your own house who cares if you mess up a little the first couple of times. Btw I miss using gas trimmers. I downgrade to battery and electric ones. Just not powerful enough. After watching your video I think I might just fix my gas trimmer and start using it again.

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use kzbin.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

Imagine what it is doing to a metal blade. I now also have a stick edger and I can tell you that on edges that have already been edged once the weedeater is way faster when it come to edging. Yes, it takes a little more string, but honestly, there is not that big of a cost difference and when you compare the time it takes to change an edger blade with loading a speed feed weedeater head with changing an edger blade there is no comparison. The weedeater overall is much faster.

Actually, I have been edging this way for 4 years now. I have never broken a window, door, or dented a car. As long as you wear eye protection there really isn't much danger as long as you are aware of your surroundings. There have been times when I don't edge because a car is right there and I don't feel safe edging. You just have to be smart about it.

Due to the fact of when some one, anyone for that matter; starts wiping pays attention to both surroundings and the job at hand.. I have been doing this for a long time.. I guess we should just stop doing anything in this business because 95% of what we do is and can be considered dangerous. We can't mow because we could blow a rock out and kill someone. We can weedeat because we might shoot a rock and break a window or injure ourselves or someone else. We can't trim hedges because we might cut our fingers off. Can't use a chainsaw because we may cut ourselves. This job is inherently dangerous and therefore we carry insurance and take as many precautions as we think is necessary to protect ourselves and others. As I said, I have been edging with a string trimmer for quite a while now and have never been hurt nor have I broken anything or hurt anyone else and many others do the same thing. If you watch any number of landscaping videos on youtube you will find that at least 60% only use a string trimmer to edge. I would much rather get hit in the foot with a plastic string than a steel blade.

that's all wrong.. It cuts a better edge when u stand on the grass and go backwards!!!!

Everyone has their own way of doing it. I can go 10 times faster by standing on the sidewalk. It makes a smaller groove which looks much nicer that a 1 inch groove that I have seen others put down by standing in the grass. To each their own. I am not trying to tell you what is best for you, you do you and I'll do me.

Straight shaft. It will save your back and they have more power.

You stopped before you got to the edge of the sidewalk? In a demonstration video on edging? Go a little further man.

My weed eater dies when I turn it upside down like that. Know why? Is it getting too much gas or too little? Hmm..

I have no idea why it is dying unless your fuel filter is clogged.

@@LansingLawnServiceLLC Do you have a video on how to change that?

@LansingLawnServiceLLC 2 жыл бұрын
@@YouTw1tFace No, but you can get a whole kit at Home Depot. It is very easy. You just fish out the fuel filter from the fuel tank and release the clamp, pull off the old filter and push on the new one, and replace the clip.
