As mentioned below, Davinci doesnt recognise h265 with the free version, but why not buy the full version and use Davinci as your main editing program? There is an optimise media function that effectively does the same as you are doing without the need to save seperate files. This too results on nice smooth footage on playback
@user-ph1ob6nj7i3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. In ProRes codec we can choose between 8-bpc and 16-bpc (at least in the Media Enconder ProRes settings). What would you choose? Because the H265 has 10-bit. If we choose 8-bpc, don't we loose dynamic range to grade the footage?

I know my 2015 phone had some problems with anything above 1080p H264 10bit 30p, but my 2018 phone does fine with 4K60 10bit HEVC. I guess I got lucky with my choice of hardware.

I found myself being more than fine with a fast SATA SSD when it comes to storage. While my playback framerate is great, scrubbing often takes a moment. When jumping from one side of a thirty minute project to the other it takes upwards of ten seconds to load the previews. It likes to fill my 32GB of RAM at that point. If I'd not wait for the older footage to be discarded Resolve often crashs as both my RAM and page file are full (combined 64GB). I only see 12-15GB used in the task manager, but the GPU offloads 6-10GB too. The weakest part of my rig is the RAM. I've been inconsiderate for a while whether 140€ for another 32GB kit are worth it for my casual style of editing 4K projects. I plan on doing a lot of fusion-only videos on the future; do you have experience with the RAM/VRAM usage of that (when it comes to simple animation without particles for example)?

You could use the advantage of proxies (premiere) or optimized media (Davinci) instead of transcoding. I personally edit in DaVinci and simply generate optimized media from the source with the same codec you mentioned. You can then edit with the optimized media perfectly, output final edit from it or from the source file, then delete the optimized media once project is done :).
@MitchLally4 жыл бұрын
I'm not the biggest fan of the proxy workflow - especially in Premiere. It locks up too much and its REAALLY slow in my experience. Also I know you can create custom presets for the outputs but the defaults give you the wrong aspect ratio!! Super annoying and a lot of people asked me about that so I stopped recommending the proxy workflow and instead go for a manual, master file route. Hope that makes sense!
@marting9744 жыл бұрын
@@MitchLally Totally, it's personal preference at the end :). I also don't like the proxy workflow in premiere but I use it every time in Davinci as they are easier to manage. I usually do a quick rough-cut of my footage, then I do the proxies for those interesting clip only. Source footage can be stored anywhere and I work with proxies locally. At the end I will export from the source and simply click "delete optimized media" once I finish the project. If I need to rework my edit in the future it's super easy to redo the proxies of what's used in the edit only instead of converting all the footage from that shoot. Have a nice week end !

I want to buy the xt4, but I've had such BAD experiences editing 4k footage on my macbook pro (2015) even with proxies, so I'm afraid the same might happen if I buy this camera. I also think that my bad experience was because of my computer and the lack of specs it has, but thinking about buying the new macbook pro 2019 with 32 RAM and the 8gb memory card, so maybe with those specs the xt4 might not give me a problem. Be aware that you can’t in every situation just say “Let’s match the bit rate in ProRes as closely as possible” when transcoding from H265. On the contrary: you will always need a much higher bitrate for ProRes to keep the same quality because of its lower compression. Compared to 200mbit H265 there is no lower then the lowest ProRes Proxy 363mbit (which is almost double the bitrate and probably fine) But I wouldn’t be surprised if a little quality is still lost.

Going from an interframe compression like h.265 to an intraframe codec like pro res and keeping the same bit rate is a huge red flag for me. Since you’re building individual frames in pro res shouldn’t your data rates be higher?
@MitchLally5 жыл бұрын
You could definitely argue this - but when target data rate is the rule that the codec follows to create frames we can't really know what the multiplier would be to maximise quality across the frames. I think this question is too deep for most people and I would just refer to my own findings that Proxy or LT is enough quality for the transcoding and I don't notice any perceptible difference, no added banding or artefacts. I honestly don't want to recommend people to encode to HQ or 4:4:4:4 when their original target bitrate is less than a quarter of those codecs (like other youtubers do) because its definitely overkill in my opinion.
@ikestrom5 жыл бұрын
@@MitchLally It can be difficult to see the artifacts by just watching the video. But they are definitely there and with ProRes Proxy they are pretty nasty. To actually see how bad it is, place the h.265 video on the timeline and then place the transcoded video right on top. Then select a transfer mode of "difference" from the compositing setting of the top video (slightly different UI depending on which NLE you're using). Then apply a color correction (or color page in Resolve) and raise the shadows a lot. You'll start to see how much different the pixels are between the two clips. You'll even see clearly the macro blocking that you get with the low bitrate ProRes Proxy. If you want to minimize the difference you definitely want to use at least ProRess 422. Even ProRes 422 HQ doesn't completely eliminate the artifacts, but they're pretty minimal. Another workflow you can use is to create proxy media and edit with it. Then output the final product with the original h.265 clips.

will davinci convert 10bit hevc 4.2.0 to 10 bit h264 4.2.0? i dont want to suffer any reduction in bit depth or the 4.2.0 in the conversion. im working on pc not mac...also can you work with pro-res on windows?
@MitchLally5 жыл бұрын
Cloud9Photography yeah you can select ‘encode maximum bitrate’

I just use proxies in premiere pro. Either process works fine. Just a matter of preference. :)
@MitchLally5 жыл бұрын
Ben Wallace yup! Although I find proxies frustrating because you don’t get a clear time estimate while they’re rendering and its also wayy slower than the resolve way.

You should say in the video that this is an Apple OS Only solution for Resolve. Cuz on Windows this codec doesn't exist in Resolve...yet.

Dualtrx Thanks I didn’t know that

It might actually support it if you use another program to transcode. I do it on Linux.

Thanks for this comment, I just imported all of my clips to Resolve to see "Media Offline" for each one.

Sadly doesn't work for my h265 videos (h265 10bit encoded with Handbrake). Resolve (and any other program) just refuses to import them.

I finally figured it out. You need to buy the HEVC addon from the Microsoft store for 0,99€. It's silly that Resolve depends on Windows to include the codec where media players come with it out of the box.
@UnstoppableBird5 жыл бұрын
is this available in the free davinci resolve version , or only the paid one?
@DesertCookie5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't work for me in the free version. I therefore think it's not available in its full capability in the free version.

Hey bro, do you find doing the extra transcoding work worth it? Wondering if you find a super noticeable difference when editing for highlights/shadows or colour grading when using h265. It’s clearly better, but is the THAT much better to make the extra work with it, you know? Thanks in advance, T.
@MitchLally4 жыл бұрын
Well in my workflow we make sure we use a codec so that we’re not compressing the signal further - ie overcompensating with the data rate. I would say yes its well worth it to be able to play back your clips at native fps for speed and accuracy.
@AtomicPixel4 жыл бұрын
Mitch Lally sorry, I meant overall using h265 vs h264. Is the 65 so much better that it makes the extra step of transcoding worth it
@WraithDesignz2 жыл бұрын
Build yourself a Gaming Rig. You will not only be able to play and edit 4K video (and higher depending on your GPU), but it will cost you less then any MAC you would buy to do the same otherwise. You can even emulate iOS on a PC as well. :D Best of both worlds, but with the best hardware for what you need to do.
