Using images in Adobe Illustrator art is a great way to add texture, but it can be difficult to select objects below the images - especially when using a clipping mask. However, you don’t have to unmask or release the clipping mask to edit. Instead, use the layers panel to select, move, and add more content to the clipping mask without taking it apart.
In this video, I show you some tips, including how to make your layer thumbnails larger and easier to see. Clipping masks are an important part of working in Illustrator, and knowing the most efficient way to edit inside them can help you work faster.
Also, learn how to turn off/on the preference “Select and Unlock objects on canvas.”

This is a great video and so helpful. I've only been using Illustrator for a couple of years and there are SO MANY things I still don't know. I've been adding textures to patterns and motifs but they are always vector files and not TIFF. What is the advantage to using a tiff? Is it to do with scaling?

Thanks Robin! The advantage to using an image is that it is more faithful to texture that is complex and organic, like a spray of ink spatters everywhere. Although you can vector trace something that complex, the result has so many anchor points, it will slow Illustrator's performance. With a bitmap tiff, you can faithfully capture a complex organic texture, the file size is fairly small, and you can assign it a fill color in Illustrator. Vector textures are great for a lot of things too, it all depends on the art.
