for me the option wasn't there in the "view" menu of the piano roll, but I figured out a way of doing it just based off my own knowledge. In the piano roll of the track that you want to edit the sustain on, hit A on your keyboard which brings up the automation view, then in the drop down menu on the left which allows you to select what you want to automate, look for sustain. For me it was "Ch 16: Sustain".

for anyone using Ableton Live 10. To control the sustain pedal open the envelopes inside the piano roll, then select midi controller and option 64 is the sustain pedal. When you click it you will see the envelope similar to the automation in Live, it work the same. If you recorded with a sustain pedal, then it should appear there

Thanks for this clip. In my version (Logic Pro X 10.4.4 it doesn't show the pedal option in the piano roll on the one hand and it didn't show the option the command via the view menu (as you suggested it). Have you got an idea what could be the matter here? Also, when I open the piano roll editor it doesn't show that mixer button (which is in your version as well). Hm...
@MusicSequencing5 жыл бұрын
Yeah Logic changed the look after the version this video was made in. To see it, press the 5th button over to the right on the top of the piano roll window (it looks like a chain, 3 lines with 2 circles), then when the automation view pops up, change it to sustain pedal as seen in the video 0:49 seconds. As for the other buttons, you want to go to the top left of the Screen then Logic Pro X -> Preferences -> Advanced Tools -> Show Advanced tools (and just turn on all of them). This will give you access to the full version of Logic, I'm not sure why they disabled them by default ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sweet and short. I liked this video! Now do you know how to draw a curve in the sustain pedal? Just like you, I can create individual points and drag them up or down, but that is not realistic pedal actions. When I record my MIDI I get very smooth curves and I want to draw them artificially inside Reaper's MIDI editor.

@MusicSequencing3 жыл бұрын
They changed the interface a bit. Instead of clicking "View", you want to click a button two to the right of the view button that has two dots and 3 lines. That will but up the midi / track automation. Then it's pretty much the same from there. Hope that helps!

The update changed it I think. There's a button now, five from the right, it two nodes connected by three lines (in between the midi button and the one with an up and down arrow.) That brings up the midi draw now. When it pops up, press the arrow button next to the region part, it will take you to Note Velocity probably, you can click that and a menu will come up where you can get to sustain. Hope that makes sense

Hey, thanks for the video. My sustain pedal operates with a binary logic (on/off) without any interval sensitivity. The midi value comes as either 0 or 127 as in this video. Normally when i play the piano i can easily fade out the sound by slowly lifting up the pedal, but in midi keyboard i always find myself editing the values in DAW. Is there any type of pedal or midi setting to generate interval values depending on the sensitivity of pressing the pedal?
@MusicSequencing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Melih, this is a good question and highlights a limitation you might find using digital instruments. Most likely, this is something that you cannot adjust with regular midi pianos. It's not just a matter of editing the midi but the software controlling the piano samples needs to be programmed to respond to that midi (hope that makes sense). This "pedal fade sound" isn't something typically found built into piano samples in my experience. Sorry :(
@Jubinell3 жыл бұрын
I think it is the problem with your keyboard OR your pedal. I use the CP88 with the provided sustain pedal by Yamaha and I get very smooth pedal curves in Reaper's MIDI Editor. You can check out one of my piano videos to hear the sound.
@tilleyroadaffairproduction67523 жыл бұрын
Can you also remove all the sustain?
@MusicSequencing2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Just drag it all down to 0 (or up to 127) depending on how the instrument responds to midi (just test it out to see)

Am I the only person who wants learn how to see which parts of a midi file have which pedals activated? I'm trying to learn a song, I have the midi file of it, but the song is a bit complex, I can't tell solely by my ears which parts have the soft pedal on or which parts have a sudden halfening of the sustain pedal :/ Will this software allow me to see that information?
@MusicSequencing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, midi control change (CC) 64 is sustain. Generally Midi CC 67 is the soft pedal. BUT if you are using Logic Pro you can also view the notation of the midi file which will show you just like regular sheet music.
@TIGUFSUPMET3 жыл бұрын
My DAW has to have the sustain either 0 or 127, and this can be fiddly to draw in! I found a quick way to edit with midi transform - new parameter set, status control data byte 1 64; setting data byte 2 to =64 fix 127.

I see that its behavior it's such like binary (from Low to High), but may this take somehow continuous values between 0 and 127? I have seen midi events properties on midi.org and it seems not feasible :(
@Mauricetz4 жыл бұрын
Ps: s0rry 4 my engli$h
@MusicSequencing4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is a midi control change so it does take continuous values. It is setup to have binary behavior though. Normally 64 - 127 is sustain on and 0 - 63 is sustain off. Hope that helps :)

I don't want to record, just plug and play. I use the website Pianu.com; but my sustain pedal doesn't work. Do you need software in order for it to work?
@MusicSequencing4 жыл бұрын
It's probably not the software, maybe the sustain pedal isn't compatible with your piano. I know some yamaha pianos aren't even compatible with some of their own yamaha sustain pedals for example
@moy_moy852 жыл бұрын
My sustain randomly cuts out entirely once you pull the value down below 64 despite that not being the lowest point for sustain. Doing my absolute head in.
@LuciferAether6 жыл бұрын
That's cool but isn't there way to enable the way the pedal was played when I recorded my MIDI file on my electric piano before exporting it to an USB to import it in FLstudio ? The MIDI file is played the way I played it with my sustain etc. but as soon as I put an instrument over it it negates my sustain .
@MusicSequencing6 жыл бұрын
What might be happening is your keyboard is record it's sustain Midi Control Change on something other than 64. Or your software instrument doesn't use 64 for sustain. That being said, you might want to consider recording midi directly into FL Studio on the instrument track, it might fix your problem and you won't have to do importing and exporting.
@LuciferAether6 жыл бұрын
@@MusicSequencing Yeah I thought about recording directly on to FLstudio but then does that mean all the pieces I have already recorder are hopeless ?
@MusicSequencing6 жыл бұрын
@@LuciferAether I don't think they are hopeless. I would Import them into FL studio and then see if the Sustain Data was recorded on a different Midi Control Change. For example maybe your Keyboard recorded the sustain pedal on Midi CC 4 instead of 64 because Midi CC 4 is used for "Foot Controllers", you can read more here www.midi.org/specifications-old/item/table-3-control-change-messages-data-bytes-2 Then in FL studio, if you can find where your sustain pedal midi information was recorded, you can copy it over to CC64 and it should work with your software instrument. Otherwise you can either edit it in manually as shown in the video or record the sustain pedal on the same track you import on as it plays back (definitely quicker for players). In the future I would just record directly into FL studio. Hope that helps.

CC 64 is NOT universal sustain.
@MusicSequencing4 жыл бұрын
The specs for MIDI are officially defined by the MIDI association. On their website you can find the list of what all MIDI Control Changes are defined for www.midi.org/specifications-old/item/table-3-control-change-messages-data-bytes-2 Just because CC 64 is explicitly defined for the sustain pedal doesn’t mean every developer will implement it to do so. Rarely it might happen, so technically you may be right. However, when this happens, it screws up compatibility and makes that specific device a big pain to try and figure out why the sustain isn’t working with the officially designated MIDI CC message for sustain...which is CC 64. So your comment might give some insight to people who have these ill developed devices. Thanks!
