If you have the money, I suggest to buy a better editing software :) Final Cut Pro x (Mac), Sony Vegas (Windows), Adobe Premiere Pro (Both. It might take a bit of time to get used to it, though)

Jasper Nicole they simply place a desk lamp directly behind them(that way u can't see it) the lamp is centered at their back but facing the background paper or fabric depending on what d person is using but most of them use professional background papers(kinda expensive for d average person). Most times the lamp is placed on a little table (behind dem)or something to raise it up(since desk lamps r small). So when they turn the lamp on, the exact part of the backdrop where the light hits (usually around d head) will be lighter than other parts, this will then create a very beautiful ombre illusion on camera(in addition to a good lens) You can even play with different colors of bulbs other than white to get different ombre effects.
