FYI: Multishot has a pulse width of 5us-25us. While Oneshot uses a pulse width of 125us-250us. So depending where you are in the throttle range, multishot is between 10x to 25x faster than Oneshot. Which means you can cram 10x-25x more esc updates into the same period of time, I.E. More Frequent signal updates/Fresher data going from the FC to the ESC.

Hey Joshua. I have a hopefully quick and easy question. I flashed Multishot on my RG20a's. Everything went smooth with the flashing process. Then I went to cleanflight, set all of my setting the way you mentioned and it seems like my motors are loosing sync when I get to about 1500usec on the throttle. They just completely stop spinning (I am also using RG 2204 2300kv). I raised my looptime to 500 to see if that would help, but I had the same problem. Any ideas?

+James Friedman Go back to Oneshot. Wait for Multishot to be released officially. If you're not running pid_process_denom=1 then you may not even be using 4 kHz, and you may not even need multishot anyway.

David Brown u appear to have a zero signal issue with oneshot running 250 looptime. see explanation on betaflight faq about this problem. I would not use oneshot with 250. you r bordering on the limit of oneshot. The max length of the signal is 250us so u can see the problem. u can get around this with lower Max throttle value

Regular BLHeli ESCs cannot run DSHOT and probably never will run DSHOT.

You can use multishot on regular blheli ESCs if you flash the custom multishot firmware. Stock BLHeli doesn't support multishot. On an F330 ESC like the original Littlebee I would not go over 2 kHz.

A little off topic but how do you set the X-Racer F303 to 4khz gyro sync? Doesn't the 6050 gyro chip on this board max out at 2khz because of the I2c? Sry, haven't been able to keep up with the Betaflight thread for a while now.. Been watching all you vids though. :)

+yfz450manny i2c can do 4 kHz under betaflight. I believe that Boris overclocked the i2c bus. On i2c busses with more capacitance you can only push the clock so fast, but on these small flight control boards, the timing remains stable at higher rates. Something like that anyway. To run the F303, or any betaflight board, at 4 kHz, just set looptime=250. Done.

No, that's entirely controlled by the ESCs. With the advent of digital protocols like DSHOT, it may be possible to communicate commands from the FC to the ESCs, such as new startup tones, or using the ESCs instead of a buzzer to make status beeps. But for now that feature is not implemented yet.

I have a question in general after just flashing my little bees to multishot. I used a 2S battery as recommended, and throttle is SO smooth on there. Not just low, but higher as well. On my regular 4s battery I seem to get more tiny "clicks" and maybe vibration low and high VS the 2S. Wondering why and if this is bad.

If you're getting clicks, I don't think that's good. The 2S throttle is smoother because the motors are spinning slower.

+Tobermory Cat If you are running at 2 kHz update rate, then there should not be any difference between multishot and oneshot. If you are running at 4 kHz or 8 kHz, there may be a difference. In my case, I went to multishot, 4 kHz, and betaflight 2.7 all at the same time (new build, nothing to lose) so this is not a very scientific experiment as to which one is contributing the most. The main reason I made this video is because there is a LOT of interest in how to run multishot, so I wanted to help people know how to upgrade. Right now, all I am prepared to say is that multishot + betaflight 2.7.0 + 4 kHz = AMAZING. Since I was running with pid_process_denom=2, I believe that the motor outputs were actually at 2 kHz during my test, which suggests that multishot was not contributing to the amazing performance. So maybe it's betaflight that is the magic after all.

Nice explanation & first hand example why you always remove your props when doing this! Hope you didn't slice any fingers in the process?? A couple of questions about Multishot: 1) One an older Naze32 Arco R5 board - I believe you can run Multishot (as per your instructions) & get it into 500 looptime + 2k mode. Is there benefit in running multishot @ 2k, or just stay with Oneshot? 2) Noticed BF 2.7 now has default "motor_pwm_rate = 400" & this value does not change when I go to 500 looptime in configurator, this used to set this to 2000. (even though I can see 2000 cycles / sec in Config page)... Should we manually set this to 2000 in CLI now, or is this only used if you want to use unsynced_fast_pwm? Why would anyone with modern motors want to do this unsynced option?

Hey Man! I've been flying with multishot for a week and I really like it, I have it on 2 of my quads with similar setup, but I fell like I have less power when I run 4K/4K, throttle seems very weak. When I change back to looptime = 500, I have the power back. Is it possible?

I don't know whether that's happening or not. You could always do a test with rpm and thrust grams at a give throttle position.

The problem with rcgroups is that the information provided is mort of the time incomplete. You need to do a new ESC calibration after flashing. Check that you don't exceed 2020 max in BLheli after the calibration. If you do, lower max command in BLheli and calibrate again. I started with 1000-2000 and ended up with 1000-1980 with good values for me. Also my min throttle had to be very different than before. First stable motor spinning value plus 15us is a good value. Completely missing is a description about pid_process_denom and what it does. Also missed to mention that oneshot125 has to stay enabled in config tab. Also please note that running f330 ESC like the little bee at 4K/4K might be too much for the slow processor to handle. Please don't "just" flash to multishot, it's s experimental and has a lot potential to fry your equipment if done wrong

+zapallalla I see the point you're making: at 2 kHz synced rate, multishot gives no advantage over oneshot because oneshot can update just as fast. For what it's worth, I have since set pid_process_denom=1 which I believe should give 4 kHz motor output rate. On top of that, I think there may be some results coming from quadmcfly that suggest that un-synced rate up to 32 kHz has beneficial effects, which certainly would be an argument in favor of multishot. But we have to reserve judgment on that until QMF finishes his research.

So like a broken record - ok, a current limiting light bulb is a good thing. how does a current limiting light bulb show me if I have flashed something that will smoke an ESC??

If the ESC tries to smoke, current will rise and the bulb will light up. But the resistance of the bulb will limit current to about 2.5 to 3.0 amps, which is not enough to permanently damage an ESC, especially if you notice that the bulb has lit up and quickly unplug things.

If you have BLHeli_S then your ESC supports Multishot. If you do not have BLHeli_S then your ESC probably does not support Multishot, unless you flashed the Multishot firmware to it, per these instructions. In Betaflight 2.6.1 and 2.7.x, you need to enable oneshot in the configuration tab, then use the correct CLI command to enable multishot. Please consult the Betaflight Wiki to find the correct CLI command. In Betaflight 2.8.0, the Oneshot GUI option has been de-coupled from the use of multishot. You only enable oneshot if you are actually using oneshot.

It's two separate things really. OneShot is better than PWM. SBus (or any serial protocol--e.g. iBus, Spektrum) is better than CPPM.

Hey. I'm over here now. Just checked my ESCs in Blheli suite and it says 2 and 4 are not in sync with master. Could this cause my yaw jitters?

+ShareCraft I turn it off because occasionally the ESC's might accidentally power up with throttle present and go into programming mode. I don't want that. But if you disable it be aware that stick calibration won't work any more.

I just watched this video again to see how you did the multishot esc calibration, and I'm still laughing at your "and now I'm multishoting" and I can hear your quad jumping, and see it in the CLI GUI, still makes me laugh. I can't seem to get my motors to spin under 1045, which is annoying because min throttle in Blheli is set to 1.000ms, so I'm losing throttle resolution. I'm using the bottle light 30A running multishot, and the fast pwm is set to multishot. Any ideas, or if I want multishot, and these escs, I'm just going to have to live with it?

I got a tyrant PNF with TY20 with oneshot 125 opto they say. Not only i cant get blheli suite to read them . I dont see them in the multishot hex list. Maybe im stuck with oneshot with these? Great vids!

Joshua Bardwell the strange thing is the esc on motor #2 it does not calibrate when I am running pid loop at 4k. lower to 2k calibrate no issue. I am not sure if that esc is a bit faulty. It is littlebee 30a. I have been calibrating at 2k and than put it back to 4k/4k. I have flying the quad with this issue at least 50 packs but no desync at all. I am have a funny feeling it may crash one day due to this. I have been through many betaflight version with this quad even before betaflight 3.0. now it is at 3.1.7

I have flashed my lb30a with multishot 14.85 imperial march. The motors give clicking sound repeatedly when to motor starts. My motors are emax rs2205 kv2300.

Joshua Bardwell the sound went away with pid processor denom lowered from 2khz to 1khz. gyro denom is 4khz. ppl on forum said it is gyro noise related. I am guessing the noise causes a sort of pid response. I am using betaflight 3.0.1. my fc is xracer 2.1. the issue is reproducible. I am not sure if it is an issue with the new betaflight or ms fw. initially I thought one of the motors has a bearing issue. when u throttle up the motors appears to turn as normal but you can hear clicking noise. I flashed it back to blheli and used os. All good. flashed it back to ms and lower the pid processor denom. it went away. increased to 2khz it came back. tried back and forth a few times same results. I am disappointed could not even lower the loop time to 500.

flashed to multishot 14.5 got the same issue. I give up. I am back on oneshot. like u have said 2khz loop time is good enough. oneshot should able to cope with 2khz.

All fixed after I unsynced the motor with the pid loop. I can even increased to 4k/4k and the motors sounded normal. in fact I would say it is feels smoother than oneshot.

+Adriano Gianni cleanflight doesn't support multishot, as you discovered. In Betaflight you must be using at least 2.9.0 for the GUI to work correctly.

+Jaap Pieroen Just to re-iterate, I had the current limiting light bulb in place, and the props could not spin hard enough to actually damage anything. The sound you hear is the prop hitting my keyboard or something and stopping. So it was startling, but not dangerous. That's the whole point of the current limiting bulb. Well, and also, the current limiting bulb will prevent the ESC from frying if the firmware disagrees with it in some way.

In theory, but usually in my experience, if min_command is 1000 then PPM_min will be around 1016 or 1020, so if PPM_min were 1000, then I would think that you hadn't calibrated.

I don't know how much risk there really is, but I would be careful if you don't want to burn the ESC. I am currently running OneShot125. It turns out that, before Betaflight 2.9, there was a bug in multishot that reduced the resolution by about 1/4!!! So OneShot might actually be better if you are not on the latest code.

ON Xm20a min command of 1000 works fine to stop motors I assume it probably has a different oscillator than the non pro littlebee's. You can also select flash other does the same thing really as what josh did. Just read that on 2.7 luxfloat isn't caliberating the gyro correctly so stick to rewrite for now. I avoided luxfloat as there were complaints about drift on the pre releases and boris couldn't replicate the problem. On rewrite however flys so nice its amazing with 2.7 and multishot. I did some crazy snap turns and it just stopped dead afterwards no drift no bounce nothing amazing.

It's possible that the move to Betaflight 2.7 or 4 kHz was the bigger contributor to the change. If you are running at 2 kHz motor updates (which is the default even with looptime 250) then multishot is not providing any advantage. The reason I posted the way I did is that I made all three changes at the same time and didn't know how much each one was contributing. But the difference was so amazing that I didn't want to wait to be scientific about it before sharing.

TIP: Instead of messing with the current limiting light bulb, just make up a 9V connector, and use a 9V alkaline battery.
