For me Crusader Kings is like the way people talk about the feeling of first playing Minecraft when they were young and how it feels now. When I started playing CK2 it felt so magical and wonderous. It definitely helped that in 2 the UI and Music was so much more immersive as well as all the supernatural events that popped up from time to time. To me CK3 doesn't have any magical feeling at all.

One thing I tried out in CK2 once was playing as a character and upon their death, instead of moving onto their heir, changing to another character somewhere on the map that was in interresting situation: a Cathar king of Italy that recently revolted and now controlled 5 provinces previously belonging to Lotharingia, or a catholic adventurer that took over pagan Bohemia. That was one of my wildest rides, and somehow I broke the game so hard that every single heresy was just as common as Catholicism, and it was impossible to reverse that process as every npc on the map would randomly change their religion to a different flavor of Christianity, with Germany and France being horribly divided while Spain and north Italy were mostly consolidated by their selective heresies- oh and Brittain was norse.

ive been doing all of these tips for years, pretty much ever since the game came out, and i rarely have boring games. basically i just install a bunch of flavor mods and history mods as well as a few that spice the game up (like great conquerer and random invasions which makes 1 random nation blob out a massive empire then collapse ever 5-15 years) and just larp the entire game. i fully immerse myself and pretend like im a medieval king in my decision making and construction of my nation.

RP is definitely the correct way to play CK III for longevity. Let a toddler play enough times and they'll eventually know how to minmax a world conquest empire with carefully bred genetic super nobles and god-level men at arms, it gets very stale because gameplay mechanics aren't procedural they are exactly the same and they are meant to supplement the story of a simulated medieval world.
@LordIsrafel Жыл бұрын
I always say to have a few games with the OP characters to serve as a tutorial on basic mechanics. Then, start an Ironman game as a count (preferably with only a single county) and try for the full experience: total conquest, perfect genetics,band convert every county to your custom religion. The process will forcibly teach you all of the remaining tactics you might need, from vassal management to the finer points of inheritance. Once you have this under your belt, you can really appreciate a proper RP, with full knowledge of what kinds of things you can do and how to manage them. One of my favorite tactics as an emperor is to fully control a Duchy without any vassals controlling a county within it. If you give them a Duchy title without control over any of its lands, they will eventually destroy the title on their own. You can then create the title again and grant it to the same one, who gets a stacking Opinion modifier that doesn't go away even once they destroy it. With enough gold, a new ruler can completely eliminate the chances of vassals deciding to rebel, as well as setting himself up with all of the Prestige he'll need for the rest of his life.

I always find being more immersed is more fun. I have three sons? I'll try to handle it how a king actually would instead of just killing off the ones I don't want to inherit. I may build a keep, or even invade a county with the intent to have extra land to give to my second, third, or fourth sons. It's always really cool to play as your heir, or even your heir's heir and see how the offshoot of your family goes. There was once when I landed my son with a county and he had a place on the council, and he basically became a best friend not only to my heir once I started playing as him, but as my heir's heir when he died. This one guy basically affected three generations of the same line. Stuff like that is really cool.
@ChRW123 Жыл бұрын
When I have a lot of hiers I sometimes change the character and play as my desired heir and try to overthrow my other brothers somehow. That makes it more realistic imho. Like some intrigues between brothers and not a king killing his sons until one remains.

I agree with Tip 1 wholeheartedly. Some time ago I started seeking out "Slow play" Roleplaying let's plays of CK3, and I began wanting to play like that too. Now, I'm avoiding Empire titles. I'm avoiding expanding too much. Instead I lean into the game. Succession, a thing I used to hate, is now a fun game of "Okay I guess we split now..." and "Well let's conquer some land for the wee ones to inherit." With the new Tours and Tournaments you can do so much fun things too. I had one King of Burgundy who's two passtimes was going to tournaments and... seducing anyone who were old enough... and I mean anyone. Which lead to him rejecting the Catholic Church and making his own polyamorous branch of Christianity. Only for his Daughter to try and reform it in a more moderate way... but eventually we had to bend the knee to the Pope. Playing slow = making a story.

The most fun I have in CK3 is playing a Tall instead of Wide empire. It is so much easier to keep track of your counts and barons when you have a few, instead of when you have dozens from the obsession of turning the map into one colour. I did a playthrough at the thessaloniki gold mines area, and although it was arguably a bit too easy because that area is goated, where I ended up with more development and gold than the vatican or byzantion. I had an amazing time managing my few barons and counts. Then I finally decided to declare war and took over all of greece and bulgaria with countless men-at-arms and mercenaries in just minutes, lost track of everything and everyone, and quit that playthrough rather soon after

I think there's also a midle ground before making custom characters. Just starting by selecting play any ruler is a gold mine of interesting starts and scenarios I recently did this as a random Count in Galacia. Through the generations I rose my house up to be Duke of Portucale. From there I gained all the territory needed to form Portugal, and promptly lost it when my leige switched to Castile. This lead me to lead the Castilian dissolusion movement, which then succeeded. Now independent, a scrappy series of wars ensued to reclaim my former vassals now aligned to powerful neighbouring Emirs. Finally, two characters later than planned, King Rodgrigo the Great was the first to ever ascended the Portuguese throne. It was great

What made me enjoy CK3 the most so far was getting the Crusader Blade mod running. It's the one that links your Bannerlord game to CK3 and let you actually fight your battles on the battlefield, which is amazing. The main reason why this makes my playthroughs so much more enjoyable is because of how different the games are and thus bringing a lot of variety to the experience. I don't have to play every single battle on the battlefield if I don't feel like, but stepping back from all the UI elements, lists of NPCs and intrigues and just enjoying a short battle that has actual impact on my empire feels really rewarding. Plus, it makes winning a crucial battle feel more epic. Only downside is keeping both games at a compatible version. But that's a fair price imho.

I was thinking about this video recently. I was trying to do a mega-campaign imperator on through to stellaris. I was also trying to conquer the world. Both of those things can be fun, but starting in CK3 and definitely once I hit EU4 I wasn't having fun anymore. I felt like I would be having more fun as a smaller power, another player in the game, than trying to manage the chaos of a multi-continent empire. So I started over. Still in Imperator. But playing things slowly. Expanding (at least somewhat) realistically and organically. If I feel like I want to hurry along to the next conquest or whatever, then it's time for a break. It's refreshing.

Great video. I always advise people to avoid focusing on "map-painting" when they play CK3. Whenever I start a game and get a new ruler, I take time to go over their personality traits and stats. I build a mental picture of this person, and I think about what they would do. Working from that leads to much more fun games than thinking about "optimal" play. On a related note, it's best not to think generations ahead. Yeah, there is fun to be had in treating your family as a breeding program, but you can only enjoy that so many times. And don't be afraid to play a just and good ruler once in a while. It's very easy to get sucked into relying on Intrigue, reveling in murder and seduction. It's fun, but if that's all you do, the game becomes a little soulless after a awhile. In my last game, I went three generations without once carrying out a hostile scheme or falsifying a claim. I looked out for my family, and tried to do right by my vassals, at least the ones that weren't out to overthrow me. It's good timing on this video. Just this week, I began looking into recording editing my games to share with friends of mine that are curious about the game but are intimidated by it. I"m not really interested in doing the professional KZbinr thing. Just sharing the stories with my friends. Another tip: try a succession game with friends. Whenever a ruler dies, hand the save file off to a friend so they can play the next ruler. Keep taking turns for each new ruler.
@lrdhsy Жыл бұрын
100% I love just roleplaying as my ruler with his traits and character in mind. I’d definitely recommend doing those vids for your friends. Playing the game to try and make a story out of it really forces u to take your time and really understand what’s going on in ur game and not just who you’re gonna murder/invade next. I also love the idea of switching between generations with a friend I’ll have to try that out. Thanks for watching the vid :)

When I first played CK2 in high school a decade ago (good god do I feel old and I'm only 26) I had a pretty janky computer. Was slow and lumbering, couldn't go past 3x in the game without the game lagging really bad, very good for baby's first laptop but not a gaming laptop like I have now. Playing CK2 at 3x with absolutely no worries about time lost from all the monotony was a religious experience for me. I still remember all of the little storylines between family members, the time my heir-apparent stormed the walls of Jerusalem, my 70something year old Field Marshall named Ser Humphrey who was in charge of training the kids in military matters and leading the forces of Britannia in war. It was so much fun just falling in love with these little 2D pictures and raising them up from nothing to be the leaders of an empire. No game has been the same and even though the De Clare name lives on in CK3 playthroughs, they pale in comparison to their namesake.

I just like to turn History upside down and create a totally different Europe, last campaign I formed the Danubian Kingdom from Divergences of Darkness and abandoned that kingdom to move to Ruthenia where I ruled as catholic east slavic speaking bavarians, who always fought the byzantines, then the mongols came and I basically helped them destroy the Byzantine empire (I had Constantinople), by then the Empire of France had territories in Syria and the Mongols took that as well as conquered all of France, eventually the Mongol empire fractured and my dynasty helped rebuild the world. "Losing" in ck3 is part of the ever evolving story, after that you can rebuild and reconquer.

Go for a achievements! Is something I like doing. It gave me reason too play as an Irish petty king or converting too Christianity after taking over Hungry as the Magyar Confederate. Now I'm trying to reform Rome there's some really tough ones and also some easy ones!

My favorite part of ck3 is sieging down entire kingdoms worth of rich lands and utterly devastating them and not even confiscating them in the peace treaty!

I took some time from game and I still like invaiding Anatolia in 3x speed and making it Turkish so let me say it , even repetitive playthroughs can be fun (I done this 4 times with my custom character)

I once ran a campaign based in a joke my girlfriend and me made. It was the most fun run I ever played because I transcribed the story to her as I played.

I had a really fun game recently. I started in Ireland as Munchad. Built my realm up and formed Ireland. My heir wanted to run away with his secret gf. He beat me in a duel and left so i disinherited him. My next of heir, different wife, was actually mich stronger via mods so win win. My new heir was a sinner in the eyes of the papacy but i needed piety for something so i went on a pilgrimage to Rome and converted to Catholicism. From there the pope waged a holy war for Jerusalem in which we won and my daughter took the throne. After some time her son took over and formed the Outremer empire, the strongest force to date. Eventually the Mongolian horde launched its attack on the world and reached my borders. I assassinated the first Khan, the next died from wounds. Now the Khan was a young boy fighting a large rebellion. I took the opportunity and gathered my allies and attacked the Mongols, fighting back and forth for years, before finally taking Persia. Soon after they crumbled. I finally got bored when the pope launched another holy war for Andalusia(?) in spain. Mostly though i play very broken OP custom characters. One of my favorite mods ive been using is Blood of the Norse Gods. The traits are crazy strong and thays what helped with that Munchad run.

Obfuscate, the holy trinity, mda. Use those three mods with obfuscate at bottom followed by trinity. This will male the game very different and make you play slower and taller.

I’ll give them a try thanks :)

I think some of it is just getting older and burning out faster than when I used to. Its not just CK3, same thing happened when I was playing Elden Ring. I love the game but it was sooo long and I played it so much I got burned out on it.

It would be better if they voice acted the popups. Or a cool mod would be AI reading all the popups
@sednabold859 Жыл бұрын
Oi, oi listen up, the balance mods Dark Ages, and Rebalance (AI cheats enabled) combined with More Provinces Expanded, more Interactive Vassals and your other mods (Inheritable Relations etc) can make the game much harder to the point of being unfair. Its a wild ride, would recommend always starting as a one province count. For a experienced player CK3 is way too easy to cheese, with this you can extend the fighting for your godamn life portion of the game to 200yrs and maybe spend the next 100 painting the map good. If you keep getting randomly assassinated hire good bodyguards. Good balance mods now exist for CK3 which bring much needed adversity to the game.
@lrdhsy Жыл бұрын
That sounds really good. The fact you can cheese the game once u get good is kind of annoying as it really kills the immersion

When picking a character click on the custom character button at the bottom right then you can customise your ruler, country and pretty much everything about the nation you’re about to play
