To boost the bass, just go into the EQ and boost the bass frequencies. That would be anything below 250 Hz. Too much can make it sound muddy.

Hey Jason, I just watched your tutorial on Davinci Resolve and it was really well done! (sorry, the comments wouldn't load on that page for some reason?). Just wanted to share how much I appreciate your videos. I watched 3 other "tutorials" before yours that were, well, not very helpful at all! WAY too fast, and didn't provide any examples (I loved how you took your basketball example and then continued building on that video - very helpful!). You provided exactly what I was looking for! I then needed a video to learn how to insert a recorded music track to my video and BAM!, sure enough you bring the goods once again! Thanks Jason!!!

@@JasonYadlovski Thank you for fast reply. :) I suppose our audio guys minds simply associate audio range in a specific way: the not-k range and the k-range (because in practice we don't say 1500 Hz or 8000 Hz, we say shortly: 1,5kHz, 8kHz), hence it's very easy to make a tongue slip. Especially when the mind works good and is faster than the mouth. :D Been there, done that. :) A guy whom I taught vocal cleaning 2 days ago (EQ, compression, noise reduction) shown me this particular video. He started learning audio cleanup before our lesson. :) I've told him afer a few seconds of the video "yeah, this guys tells it like it is and with good teaching skills, you can benefit from his videos". I'm glad to tell you this. I think people should express positive excitement, gratitude, satisfaction, joy. Say nice things to each other. This is my part of "audio-editing" the World. :D Cheers! BTW. I had also taught this guy to firstly normalize the audio (for many reasons, i.e. to see the envelope better) because that's what I do since editing samples on my Amiga 1200 back in the 1999. :)
@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for all of the kind words! I'm totally with you on the 'Not-K range and 'K-range' 😁 Most of the time I just say the numbers and not even the Hz or kHz. That's awesome that you give people audio lessons. Sounds like a fun gig. Good call on normalizing the audio first too. 👍 It's great to hear that you are all about the kindness, I feel the same way. Build people up, don't tear them down. It would be nice if everyone thought that way. I really appreciate your feedback, thank you again! 😁🎛🎙🎧
@CJWarlock4 жыл бұрын
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks! This was a one time free lesson for a greater good (this guy interviews people, many of whom share helpful knowledge there), however who knows - maybe I've just started. :) I don't say "Hz" either. Only "eight kay" etc. I have my own practical names too: 120-125 Hz is "practical (upper) limit of a bass speaker cabinet" (on stage I set them around 95 Hz and 120 was only for certain speakers and program), 5 kHz is "guitar string after-whizz", 33 Hz is "the fat warmth that also may cook the speakers", 1kHz is of course "the (vocal) presence". Around 2-2,5k is "the bonus presence for women with nice, wide lips who open their mouth fully when talking (AKA proper diction)". I think the last one may be boosted for these women who mumble with their mouth half-shut. During the said lesson I've taught that guy what to do with peaks of "group, humorous excitement" during interviews (when people suddenly talk together and/or laugh): select that fragment, determine the compression rate and threshold and test it until it's good. When it's good? When the spiked hair peak is combed down enough for overall normalization but the people and their excitement doesn't sound robotic, artificial, only it's keeping its natural sound: like real humans having a good moment but not like a suddenly loudly cheering soccer crowd in a beer pub. :) In practice it means 8:1 fast attack with threshold where the ceiling of the regular speech preceding the peak sits (or 1 - 1.5 dB over that ceiling - testing "how it feels" is mandatory). People like to listen to real people, not robots. Human, warm factor is sometimes key for keeping the listener's attention. And his pleasure of listening of course. :D Thanks for teaching people how to make audio more pleasurable to listen to. :D Have a nice day. PS. Your surname sounds Polish. I'm from Poland. Do you have Polish roots? And I don't mean vegetables or spices. :D PS. I appreciate you reading my long comment. This is the last of such ones in this thread. :) PS2: Of course channel subscribed. :)

@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
Hi! So you want to listen for anything that sounds harsh. You’ll know it when you hit it because it will just sound harsh, bad, muffled, a high-pitched ear pierced noise, etc. generally if you look in the 1000 to 2000 range you’ll find some harsh sounds and you will find some muffled sounds around the 400 to 600 range.

One question: what is your input gain for the mic and your output gain on pc? I ask 'cause I have a Fifine A8 and sometimes I need to raise the gain almost 100% because of my weak voice (with obvious problems later when I hear background noise and forcing me to add filters)
@JasonYadlovski10 ай бұрын
Ideally when you are recording into Resolve (or any other program), aim to get your input levels around -18dB to -15dB. This will give you enough headroom to edit the audio and boost it a bit in post. Regarding out put levels, for edited audio, I aim for -10dB on a track level. I'll always check the overall loudness of a video too, once all of the audio editing is done for the video, including SFX and Music. Here's a few videos that might help: Setting Levels: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6LKaXZqnJtorbM Loudness: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaq6d3-JabuKrKM

Awesome, welcome to DaVinci Resolve! Glad you found my videos helpful. 😁 So those different settings basically emulate different EQ characteristics from 'Classic' mixing consoles. Basically it will effect the shape of the EQ as you adjust it. @JasonYadlovski5 жыл бұрын
If you set the EQ in Fairlight using the EQ in the mixer section, then everything in that track will have that EQ applied to it. If you selected a clip and used the EQ in the inspector (in either the Edit or Fairlight Tabs) then the EQ would apply to that clip only. Does that answer your question? When you normalize audio, is it better to set it at 0 or -9? I think you've done different numbers in other videos. My pastor is using a Blue Snowball mic on setting 2 (-10 dbs) because the first time he tried it on setting 1 it was clipping left and right, since he speaks pretty loudly. And would you also recommend Noise Reduction before or after fixing the EQ??
@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
Hi! When I normalize my audio, I never use 0. Then the audio will be too 'hot' or loud. I always normalize to -8. It's always worked good for me. Generally gives you a good volume level, but remeber if you have any peaks in there, it will throw off the normalization. So you have to account for that. For me, as a general rule, I use the EQ first before adding in other noise reduction and effects. I want the best starting point first. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
@connorheck36584 жыл бұрын
Jason Yadlovski I’m confused by this, you were definitely normalizing audio levels to zero in this video...
@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
@Connor Heck Yeah, I normalize to -8db now. Not correct here...but that’s just a starting point.
@GerbenWijnja4 жыл бұрын
@@connorheck3658 Well, he's using Sample Peak normalization, which simply selects the highest peak in the whole sample, and then applies a gain to the whole sample. That's all normalization does. It doesn't do anything to the lows and the highs or whatever. So it just looks at the peaks. But peaks don't tell you anything about how LOUD audio sounds to your ears. There can be two audio clips with the same peak, but one can sound much louder than the other. Luckily since Resolve 16 there are much better options than the Sample Peak algorithm. You can now select actual broadcast standards. The most recent and best standards are ITU BS.1770 and EBU R128. The latter is the best. If you apply R128 normalization to different audio clips, they will sound equally loud. There's a long but great video explaining all the details about R128 here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6aopYSneJKGp9E

Thanks so much Jason! We followed your advice in this video for our first video, and we loved the improved audio quality in fairlight. We are once again doing so for our second video, and what we have found is that although the audio quality is great while playing the video in fairlight, once rendered, or even playing the video in the main timeline, the edited audio quality does not seem to carry over from fairlight. Is there some extra step we're missing? Thanks Jason
@JasonYadlovski5 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Happy to hear you've got your audio sounding good! Seems like a strange problem you're having. If your effects, eq, etc. work in the Fairlight tab, they should work in your main timeline without any issues. I'm not aware of a 'disable audio effects' type of button (similar to the toggle for color & fusion tabs). If it's a problem when the video is exported, try adjusting your audio export settings in the delivery tab. Here is what I usually use: Codec: AAC Bit Rate: Constant Data Rate: 320 Kb/s Bit Depth: 16 Output Track 1: Main 1 (Stereo) Maybe try that on export and see if that helps. If I can come up with any other suggestions, I'll post it for you. Hope this helps! Thanks for checking out the video!

Hi! So there’s a few things you could try, I would try a high pass filter and just continue to bring it up until it sounds the way you’d like. I would not bring it higher than say 150 Hz or so. If it still has too much bass to it, I would use the point one with a soft bell curve and drop the frequency somewhere in the 200 to 400 range. How much you reduce the frequencies depends on how much low end you wanna remove. You could also try sweeping a point in the 600 to 900 Hz range to find anything that may also make it sound muddy and reduce that as well. Hope this helps!

This is another great video in your series on Davinci Audio - thanks for explaining the EQ. I've made this technique part of my standard work flow. I just finished my 2nd virtual choir project. Fixing the audio from a variety of low quality microphones in laptops and phones is a challenge. Are there any EQ plugins for Davinci that have more bands?
@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You can add in any VST plugins, but i don't know of any that add more bands of EQ. The best bet is to just use separate tracks for each audio. Or another option is to process the audio in another program specifically for Audio and then bring it into Resolve.
@EZMotoTim4 жыл бұрын
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for the quick reply. I do process and render each original video. Next I assemble all the videos for each voice part, i.e. all sopranos in one timeline, etc. Then the S, A, T, B timelines go on the master timeline. With this technique I can apply EQ on each of the layers which, in effect, gives me more EQ bands. I don't know if this is the "proper" way to do things, but it seems to work.

Awesome video. Very much appreciated given I've moved over from Premiere/Audition, as a non audio professional, I'm about to dive into Fusion e.g. I'm missing Premiere's features for enhancing spoken dialogue settings from (e.g. simple reduce noise presets, vocal enhancements). I also use the 'Blue Yeti' for recording audio dialogue, however audio recorded by 'remote' colleagues out the box contains a little background noise. Would love to understand what settings you use on the Yeti for recording dialogue? I've never found/mastered a definitive workflow to master those best settings beyond (cardinal) I've been using Volume 100, gain just above zero (e.g. 1-3%?), 32bit float etc.. Aside from recording 6-10inches away, into the front, with the Mic 'off the desk' to remove vibrations etc etc. I've heard one audio engineer saying to turn up your gain to a max of around 70% (just before clipping occurs)... However Yeti guidelines say the opposite. Curious what Yeti settings you used for this example? Given your audio so nice out of the box - even before enhancements, especially compared to the audio I'm adding into videos/having to clean up to get background hiss/humm/slight white noise etc removed. Anyway thanks again for this video, I'll be trying these EQ settings next within 'Fairlight' - whilst experimenting with Noise reduction, which I'm guessing will be similar to Auditon's subject to finer understanding of the settings.
@JasonYadlovski5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words and checking out the video! My typical setup for the Yeti is to have the gain (on the back of the mic) at about 1/4 the way up from zero. I keep it on my desk using the stand it came with. I record the audio with garage band on my MacBook Pro. The recording level in garage band is around 50% - 60%. I make sure there is no processing done in GarageBand, just the straight recording. I export that file and bring it into DaVinci Resolve where I apply EQ, Desser, Multiband Compressor and then it is usually good to go. If I have any background noise I take care of it with an audio gate or noise reduction. Hope this helps!

Hi! You're welcome! If you're not able to find any reverb settings that sound good, then next thing I'd look to do is add some Delay or Echo. They are a built in plugins and they are under Delay section. Again, you'll have to play with the settings a bit and see how it works out. There are some presets in a dropdown at the top you can try too. You can also go under Modulation in the plugins and try some of those too. There are some presets there to start with as well. Thank you for a very good tutorial. But there is one thing that I don´t understand. It seems like when i do something with one audio clip that I am then adding the same effect on all audio tracks that is on Audio 1. For me this is not a good thing because in Audio 1 I have sounds from different places where I switch between different female and male voices, and different sound quality. Is there a way around it?
@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! Thanks for checking out the video! You are correct, everything on that audio track will be affected by using that EQ in the mixer section. The right way is to actually separate all the different audio types, male, female, music etc. on to different tracks. Then you can adjust each track individually. If you decide to keep all of your audio in one track, then you can make adjustments to individual clips in the edit tab by selecting the clip and opening the inspector. You have a basic EQ and some basic controls but that’s it. Hope this info helps! Best of luck on your project! 😁👍

You are seeing 2 choices because it's your right and left channels from the mic, assuming you create a stereo audio track. If you are making the adjustments to the entire audio track in the Fairlight tab EQ then yes you can move the clip anywhere in that track (in the Edit tab or Fairlight tab) and the EQ will apply to that clip. @JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Sure. You need to do some EQ on your audio. I’m actually making a video about that for Thursday. Basically you can jump into Fairlight, open the track EQ in the mixer and look in the 1k to 4.5k range and try to find the frequency and reduce it a bit. If you don’t find it in that range, grab one of your band points, boost it up and sweep it back-and-forth across the EQ frequencies to see where that sound is, I want to find it drop that frequency to reduce the harsh sound.

Great tutorial, but applying EQ settings is applying it to the entire Audio Track 1 where I have other dialogues too that I want to adjust the EQ levels for separately. How do I apply it only to individualized sound clips?

Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! You’ve got 2 options - first, ideally you could separate your dialogue into two separate tracks. So each person is on their own track. You would make cuts to your audio and move one person’s dialogue to a separate track. Then you can EQ each track specifically for that person. The second option is to make cuts in your audio track where each person talks and then in the edit tab you can use the basic EQ in the inspector on each clip. Regardless, the best thing to do is have separate audio tracks so you can edit as necessary.

@@JasonYadlovski This is for a film and I have already separated out the dialogues into 2 tracks, so each person is on his/her own track: one for the female character (117 clips) on A1 and the second for the male character (47 clips) on A2. On the Fairlight tab, it only gives me the Mixer option for A1 or A2. Any change I make on the EQ level seems to apply to the entire track. I want to correct the bands for the individual clips within the track but I'm unable to. The basic EQ on the Edit tab is not giving me enough bands. Your demo seems to let you to use the Fairlight tab to apply individual EQ settings within the same track. How? Or, did it apply to both your Blue Yeti cuts you have?

@@RHarish I understand your setup better now. When you use the EQ in the mixer section of the Fairlight tab, it will effect the entire track. If you want to adjust individual clips within the track, the only way is to open the inspector (in Fairlight or Edit page) and use the simplified EQ. In the video, any EQ adjustments I made effected the entire track. Another option, since you already have your audio cut into clips, take the clips you want a different EQ on and place them on a new track. I'm assuming your sound may vary a lot from clip to clip and that's why you need different EQ's for different clips, right? I hope this info helps you. If I can answer any more questions, feel free to ask. Best of luck on your project!

@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for the speedy responses. This is very useful information! One last question - does it make a difference between fixing EQ levels first before adjusting the overall dB levels, or first adjusting the dB levels and then fixing the EQ levels?

I try to get my levels set first so I’ve got good signal and good volume. But in theory it shouldn’t matter. 👍😁
