Emollients soften and smooth skin: coconut oil, jojoba oil, sesame oil, almond oil, other plant oils, squalene, olive oil/oleic acid, cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol , stearic acid, stearyl alcohol
Occlusives seal in moisture and create a protective barrier: shea butter, cocoa butter, mineral oil, lanolin, petrolatum, paraffin, beeswax, triethylhexanoin
*NB: Occlusive does not mean “pore clogging”
Humectants attract water to the skin: glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol, sodium PCA, hyaluronic acid, allantoin, urea
Surfactants dissolve dirt and oils and are used in cleansers. They also make things feel slippery and glide on easily: sodium laureth sulfate, cocomidopropyl betaine, disodium cocamphodiacetate, ammonium laurel sulfate, polysorbate 85 or polysorbate 60, sodium lauryl sulfate, cocamide DEA
Binders and emulsifiers create a stable mixture of different ingredients: butylene glycol (also a humectant), polysorbates, glyceryl stearate (also an emollient and makes things pearly), cetearyl alcohol (emollient tood), cetyl alcohol (emollient too) , stearic acid (surfactant & emollient too), stearyl alcohol (emollient too), PEG or PEG-100 stearate (emollient & surfactant too), Triethanolamine (buffer too), palmitates (emollients too), Ceteareth 20
Texturizes thicken or add slippage to a product, so it can be smoothly applied: alkyl benzoate (also an emollient), carbomer, polymers (PEG or seaweed), dimethicone & cyclomethicone (both silicones that are also emollients), polysorbate 20 & 80 (surfactants too), pentaerythrityl tetraotanoate, caprylic and succinic triglycerides (emollients too), sodium chloride
Buffers neutralize acid and balance the pH of a product, making it less irritating: sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, triethanolamine
Preservatives kill bacteria and prevent contamination: Tocopherol acetate (vitamin E derivative; emollients and antioxidant), propylene and butylene glycols (humectants), disodium and tetrasodium EDTA, diazolidiyl and imidazolydyl urea, parabens, methyliosthiazolinone, ascorbyl palmitate (vitamin C derivative), benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol

Did a research project on parabens and the conclusion was exactly what you said. So many people in the class I presented too were shocked. People should do research instead of listening to idiots online who claim parabens are bad.

A "Skin Care By Andrea" line of products seems mandatory now. I just subscribed. I CANNOT seem to get through your videos quickly enough for my liking. A very sincere kudos to you; every woman needs to see your videos. Andrea, you are a gift to us. Thank you! I hope your efforts here manifest into something wonderful. My sis is an MD (Emergency Medicine) and she gets her share of free samples from Derms (of course I lovingly steal them) but I never really knew if they were good products or just free ones. Glad to see many Cerave in my loot. And now I have a much better, comprehensive understanding of their ingredients - both the good (but wrongfully demonized) vs. truly irritating. You've gifted us with powerful information and empowerment! You, Dr. Dray, Rock! (and Hey! from Austin, TX)

Looked at the neutrogena hydroboost and it's basically a bunch of emollients, humectants and stuff to give it slip. So much dimethicone and variations of it. i never really researched each and every ingredient in skin care products cause it was so overwhelming and I didnt know where to start, this video was so helpful. After I graduate from cosmetology, I eventually want to go back to school for my esthetician license, so this information is gold to me! Keep up the awesome videos! Maybe one day I can learn how all these ingredients are sourced and made.

Cannot thank you enough for defining what is , for me at least, very confusing terminology. I have never had problems with my skin, and am about to turn 65 and am taken for much younger. Based on the public consensus I have done everything wrong. I wish there was a way to post a close-up of my skin without makeup. When I was young I didn't have the money for expensive products. I used Vaseline, castor oil, zinc oxide and baby oil. When sunscreen became available I added that. As an adult I just continued this since it worked for me. I adore the CeraVe in the 16oz tub, their mild cleanser, cleansing cloths and both the AM and PM moisturizers. This has been a new addition as I learned about them and how to use them properly through your advice. I took ballet for many years, and in high school was required to use very heavy stage make-up for recitals and competitions. If it were not for tubs of Vaseline that stuff would still be stuck to my face. My grandmother and mother always used castor oil to soothe their upper and lower eye lids. I buy it at CVS or whatever pharmacy is close by. No special type as long as it is sealed. Most say they are laxatives. I use Q-tips or finger tips to apply. Also great for correcting mascara mistakes. I am sure genetics play a part since my children and grandchildren have beautiful skin. I never was a sun worshipper so possibly that kept my pores small. By the time I hit 50, my pores began to disappear. In my mid 60s now my T zone is finally drying up, but no clogged pores from many years of using the WRONG products. HUGE HUGS and enormous gratitude for sharing so much knowledge. Btw I really agree with the idea of writing a book. You have so much knowledge to offer, in addition your sense of humor and presentation are delightful. Put it all together and it would make an extremely entertaining learning experience in print. Wishing you continued success no matter which direction you decide on. I honestly am certain that you have countless fellowship offers. Hope the sun is shining in Houston.

Love your videos! Thank you, Dr. Dray. I use Squalane neat without any issues. I put it on before heading to the gym in the morning and it keeps my face very soft. I use it primarily to eliminate any flaky skin from using trentinoin-works wonderfully. Best wishes.

You’re channel is so informative thank you for shutting down those misconceptions out there and putting our fears to rest. More people need to watch your videos, they’re the best. Quick question, what can get rid of stretch marks? Does bio-derm really help? Or only Retin-a be used for it?

This was so great.. I am a big fan . So great to hear someone push sunscreen and discourage fragrance. I love squalane in moisturizers. This was full of useful information. Petroleum breaks me out and I have dry skin. So it's hard to find good occluisves. I noticed many cream, that I like have shea & squalane or panthenol. So I started topping off my creams with shea butter to buff up the occlusion. That got me through winter . I was hoping adding a dfew drops of squalane oil do the same.. I had no problems with it, but was not wowed by it. I used one Garden of Wisdom (olive based) and one from Lotion Crafter (sugar based and thinner)...

Dr. Dray, love your videos ! So helpful! Thank you for making them! Can you make a video about how long you should keep skincare and cosmetics? If you have done something like this before maybe you can put the link here. I thought about this when you talked about preservatives. Always wondered this, since products can be expensive to throw out too soon. Some stores encourage you to buy new ones, maybe to sell more products ?

Hi great and informative video! One ingredient you didn’t mention is sd alcohol. I see a lot of conflicting information some say it’s terrible for your skin others say when used correctly isn’t harmful. I use Japanese sunscreens everyday and they have never dried out my skin but I also have seen that it can do long term damage to the skin barrier.
