In this video we finally finished the beginners fiberglass box, You see from this series of videos how something can be created from a few shapes and some cloth. This video goes over the body filler stage and then leads up to the final paint.
In the future we will revisit this project to do some paint techniques such as marblizing a box and finishing work with wet sanding.
Keep in mind this box was made as a quick introductory to the channel. We will be showing much more advance fiberglass but we felt the need to take you back to the beginning just like we started. Stick with us and learn the many different variations like moulds and gelcoats ect....

Thanks for the video. I have made a lot of mdf boxes in the past. I also worked in body shop for years so worked with many of these materials, but never made a fiberglass box. I'm about to venture into it just for personal system. Had an odd shape I wanted to make and fiberglass sounds like the ticket. You have inspired me to go ahead and give it a try. Is for a cubby speaker for my prius.

Awesome videos! I've been mulling over how to build an instrument pod for my old sailboat (new ones are insanely expensive) and haven't found a method that would be light, strong, and waterproof, and still get the nice curvy contours that look good. Your method looks like what the doctor ordered. I'll send you a photo if I manage to pull it off. Thanks!

In the near future I am going to install a midbass driver in the back section of my front doors.The front section is where the stock 5.25 goes.Without fiberglassing I think I'll mount a piece if ABS to the door frame and build speaker rings on that to where they come right to the back of the door panel.Then just top mount the woofer right to it and install the grill.What do you think of that idea?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 7 жыл бұрын
What vehicle is it. And mounting a mid bass driver to ABS would require you use at least 3/16th or thicker ABS.
@Grayback1973
@Grayback1973 7 жыл бұрын
Its a 2009 Nissan Sentra.ABS(1/2 inch) would go over back part of service panel so it'd be bolted top and bottom only.The service hole is pretty big and I've got it covered with Dynamat now.Just seems like a lot of weight for the sheet metal to support plus after cutting the hole in the ABS for the driver the ABS would weaken but the mounted MDF ring could strengthen that back up.Other thing is that there's a foam insert on the back of the door panel that would need to be removed and I'm not sure how that would weaken the panel and cause vibrations from the driver.However,the driver will be top mounted right through the door panel to the MDF ring so that would strengthen that. LOL,sorry for the rant but I'm thinking out loud to a guy that does this for a living and can give me some descent feedback.
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 7 жыл бұрын
Okay so I looked at the door panel on that and see the foam insert on the back of the panel your talking about. Its moulded to the shape of the door while it could serve as some structure to the door I don't see alot of options so with that removed I do not feel you will harm your door panel much if your going to put a speaker in that area. The downside is that is in the area of your seat and where your arse will be sitting so Im not sure if its an idea location as alot of sound gets covered when a person is seated in the vehicle. Looking over that door panel though , without reshaping the entire thing , AKA a new build door panel I believe your in about the only area to add one without adding a fiberglass job overtop the door panel and putting both up toward where the original speaker sits in that door.

@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 8 жыл бұрын
+Steve Carmichael I was at my friends shop for that. He was showing me 2 of his new sanders and how they blast through body filler. I think it's subjective to how your shop is setup. Since I have an 11 amp squirrel cage fan filter I would prefer this method going through body filler. For wood I'd rather use the electric Bosch with built in filter.

Yay body filler, I love the whole process! Sarcasm is hard to type, let me clarify. I’d rather roll around in a bed of that fiberglass mat than fill, sand, fill, sand, fill, sand. However it is a necessary process that you have to have patience with, it will determine how good the end result will be.
@barnes29510
@barnes29510 22 күн бұрын
It does take passion working with it.... After 30yrs doing bodywork; not long ago, saw a trick to make laying out the mud a whole lot easier... Add a little resin (fiberglass) to the filler. It thins it out. On a flat surface, you can thin it to where it will self level.
@deegan727
@deegan727 22 күн бұрын
@@barnes29510 I do the same, but with plastic honey for large areas I want thin application on. That method is invaluable when it’s needed.

Great videos thanks for taking the time to make these. I just finished a 4 speaker setup about 2 months ago for my RZR and it was my first go-round with fiberglass so I'm about to remake it. It's got 4 6.5" Infinity marine speakers, a 600 watt marine JBL amp, a marine head unit and 2 LED lights for dome lights. I just used a regular fleece blanket and it took a TON of resin to really get it coated. I'm looking to go to a material that doesn't take so much resin and will be a bit easier to work with. Do you have any recommendations?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've used fleece in the past and it will drink your resin and offers not much flex to doing really strong curves and no added strength. I find the close out section in Walmart to be my best friend. The material you see me using in the video if you go back to Part 1 and look was just a close out. I just go through fabrics and stretch them until I find something thin but with great stretch. When I go into the advanced fiberglass projects Ill bring this up again and try to touch the subject for you. This was thrown together and going back to how I use to do it to how I do it now was awkward but it helps if its your first time.

so did you end up fibreglassing right into the port or just body filler? when done with MDF would you have to use the same method that you have used here? Also what product of resin and body filler have you \ used
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 6 жыл бұрын
I used resin to attach it and then just body filled it up to make it look nice over the OSB, you are correct that with MDF the method would have changed slightly, I use a router bit to put a inset on the edge of MDF so my fabric has a final resting place where the cloth and MDF meet. The body filler I use is typically just a lightweight body filler around 20 bucks. The Resin is Solarrez. It is UV activated so the sun sets it up in minutes.

Yes, apply 2 inch painters or masking tape to the entire area first. I know its your car but always treat it like its a brand new Lexus that belongs to the pickiest of customers. Then mask it in the other direction and apply some type of PVA so you can release your mold once your done. Other then that its a pretty straight forward process.

Random Audio Guy I hear you about treating the car with care.I manufactured stock amplifier bypass kits for Equinox and Terrains.I'm convinced people would rather hack/cut into their stock wiring than buy a $30 kit like I make that completely eliminates the need to do that.My mind just doesn't think that way. Thanks for the feedback! Any tips on getting rid of air bubbles and how to spot them while spreading the resin on the mat?

+Darrell Doeing if by stick to it you mean can you work on aluminum then yes but if you mean if it will stick by putting resin to a flat piece of aluminum and Fiberglass then no. You would have to attach it by bolts. If you were to come around the aluminum with cloth so it went ever the edges and had a way to grip like I do the wood in this video than yes it would.

Yes actually, Ill be doing a future video with this box. The subs movement was good extension pushing it to the Xmax limits but with a really low bass delivery. Imagine a 15 inch subwoofer banging lows but not pushed to its limits, thats how this turned out. As you know Sound pressure does not show well in videos but it can move the mirror of a van. Not the bass killer that it could be if it were setup for that but just overall a really good sound.

I personally use an 80. and remember it's also about your cfm not just your tank. I started with a 30 gallon that done 6.7 cfm at 45 and 4.8 cfm at 45psi. My current setup is 80 gallon with 18.4 cfm at 90 psi. and not rates at 45. It may be best to start out with a harbor freight 30 gallon unless you plan on making a living than go to a bigger unit with a better motor and tank.

+kingchevy614 spraying with that small of a tank wouldn't be a good idea. reason is when your spraying when it kicks on it will spurt a splotch of paint when it first starts up the compressor. you'll minimize this the larger the compressor and tank. I'd your gun your spraying with is for example 6.5 cfm then in the real world you want double that. so it's able to fill the tank and supply you with the 6.5 cfm you need at the same time. just a learning process is all.

If the owner of this channel still looks at the old videos can someone tell me and explain to me how do I find the cubic feet of a almost full fiberglass sub enclosure I know how to get it on wood but fiberglass is rounded and all kind of different angles

Get a 12x12x12 inch cardboard box. Fill it with packing peanuts and dump it into your box. If you poured 2.3 cubic feet into the box you'll know the airspace fairly close.

Hey so I'm still a student trying to fiberglass some boxes I made them from the carpet inserts in an Audi. After I put five coats of paint on one of them my noticed a bunch of low spots in it how in the hell do I repair that and don't tell me I have to go back down to 80 and refill that. 😩 Help plz

Just use "ICING Body filler" after you rough it back up. You will have to repaint from what your describing. But icing filler goes on very thin and covers imperfections.

@@jdmchickkustomz9417 if you're ever in the priming stage & you notice some lows or say a small dent from a hell storm. You can level it out by just applying the primer a lot heavier in the spot. Especially, on the roof hood or trunk lid. And water sand it back down level.

So I watched all three videos on this and just have a suggestion. Call it a "Watch me build this" and not "How to". I wasted my time and still need to find a video on how to apply the fiberglass.

You could do that in half the time and half the material if you were more precise with the spreading of your filler

Brian Hanners I'm not a body man. And most of the people watching the video won't be either. I did it so the people could learn how it's done. But normally I hand it over to a body guy that does this stage. But he doesn't have time for me to film and teach people so it was best I took the time to film and explain. So many you tubers skip alot of steps and I wanted to take the time to show them is all.
