This is our first video of a 2 part series. In this video we go over the basic setup and shaping of an enclosure that shows how we get it to the stage people get a visual on. This was made in about 30 minutes but it will teach you the basics. Please use MDF or Birch Plywood and not the OSB , this was just a DEMO of how it is done.

How do you calculate air space and port length for these types of enclosures? Also, what about the corner of the port that drops down (back corner at port turn)? Is this accounted for as well?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 7 жыл бұрын
The best way to determine air volume of a fiberglass box is Sand or for most people a more readily available product is packing peanuts. You fill up the volume once you have it shaped and then pour that into a 12x12x12 cardboard box until you fill it up with the total amount and lets say you ended with 2.2 boxes of packing peanuts then you have a very close idea to your total volume of airspace. If at this point you need to make adjustments to the port you do it then before you start putting on resin. I hope that makes sense enough for you, Its hard to put into words something that is so easy to do but hard to word it out. Maybe ill cover this in a future video, plan on alot more fiberglassing coming and now that we are through remote start season new videos should roll in a bit faster so Ill try to remember this and cover it for you. PS, yes the port curve on the top is accounted for in this box. And if you go for a tune of 32 hz, you might end up with 33 or even 31 but you will be very close either way.

Question (possibly dumb)...is the fabric necessary? Can you apply the fiberglass over a carpet speaker box? Or would the carpet need to be removed and then a fabric over a bare box? Thanks.
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 5 жыл бұрын
Im not sure exactly why a person would want to do that unless your building off a box that is already built, Then yes you could put resin on the carpet and let it harden them build off that.

Hi Random,Got a question and sort of in a pickle.I'm glassing a spare tire well and on the front and sides where the wood meets the sheet metal there are small gaps.Will the resin and chop mat fill that in just fine or is there another way to deal with small gaps?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 6 жыл бұрын
Assuming you mask the area off that you are working in. And if I am picturing what you are saying right then as you brush resin onto the chop mat you take you tools and slowly work it into the area and it fills these voids. Again Im hoping I am picturing this correctly.
@Grayback1973

I’m going to build a sound bar for the jeep using your methods I have a few questions if you have time to answer. One is if I wanna put subs and mid range with tweeters do I have to block the subs completely as if they were incased then build the others together. If I do should I have ports for just the sub enclosure or all three parts. Sorry kinda new to the speaker side of building. I found two 6.6 600wt 300rms subs to use and think they may sound pretty cool that way. And second question would be would this have to be wired to an amp then the jeep or could use bridge that rite into the original sound bar plug. Any ideas or suggestions would be awesome. And I can share what I come up with
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 3 жыл бұрын
That will be a really large soundbar if you try to intertgrate the subwoofers into it with the mids and highs , But yes if you did do that you would want to seperate the subwoofers from the mids as it would beat them to death quickly. I would do a sound bar and put the subwoofer somewhere else, Just my opinion. You would want to run this off its own amplifier, as the factory radio will not make enough power to push a good sound bar, Doesnt really do a good job of pushing the stock sound bar in my honest opinion. Id do some good Pro audios, if DD or something like that doesnt fit your budget then maybe look into PRV they offer great mids and highs affordably.

@@RandomAudioGuys awesome I’m only running two small 6.6 subs 600wt 300rms I do wanna do big loud subs but as it’s a jeep that I’ll have to build into the jeep and water proofing and lots of research lol. I was thinking about integrating a center console sub too but that’s down the road this is a quick in need of hearing loud sound with the top off and flying down the highway lol. But still same idea separate the subs. Wire them to the amp them the deck. Only question left is and please explain like I’m 4 why are there two sets of terminals on the subs? I’ve never wired them inside a box before just a box into a car once

Just to clarify regular OSB is not for subfloors. It’s for sheathing and roof decking. Subfloor osb is actually wax impregnated which makes it water proof and it is a much more dense product that holds screws well. . I actually like it better than birch or MDF

Random Audio Guy thank you for the reply ....so that resin will harden that purple material for shape..I asked because I've seen same purple blanket in other videos and then you apply the fiberglass mat for the harder feel and then the fiber blanket over it all for smoother surface
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 6 жыл бұрын
Yes depending on the object your working on. Typically we get to work on the outside surface. I use other techniques where I use the inside and build it strong from that direction. Makes it a lot easier to finish that way but its not always a choice. Depends on the shape and object your doing.

You can buy it on Amazon. As for what cloth there is really not 1 any certain cloth required, If it stretches and can give you the shape your looking for thats the one you want to use. I cannot think of any cloth that has a bad reaction to fiberglass resin, I do know Terry Cloth doesnt do well. It stretches but is very brittle once it sets up so try to stay away from that. Take a trip to your local walmart or what you have like them that carries fabric and hit the close out sections, I usually get my fabrics for a dollar or two per yard.

with the rings... if I were to have a 12' sub.. what would the outside of the ring be compared to the inside? would it be 12' on the outside or would the inside of the ring be 12'?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 7 жыл бұрын
The hole cutout for most 12 inch subwoofers is 11 1/8th inch. So your Ring would be in the neighborhood of 12 to 12 and half on the outside. Just depends on which subwoofers your using. I like my Rings to be at least 1 inch but on the newer projects were working on you will see where we build 2 rings and attach them together so the subwoofer is countersunk into the box. Hope that helps and stay tuned we got more coming, Just had a cold winter so I was stuck with remote starts, got a few videos filmed though, Just got to get them edited and up on the channel.
@EvieJohnson
@EvieJohnson 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'll definitely be watching. So the actual circumference of the outside of the ring will be 12 and a half, and the inside measured at 12' for the sub to sit flush?
@RandomAudioGuys
@RandomAudioGuys 7 жыл бұрын
Depends on the subwoofer, Most subwoofers actually are about 12 1/2, So if I wanted to do a flush I would have 1 ring normal 11 1/8th hole to 14, then the top ring would be lets say 12 1/2 to 14, so they flush up together , glue them and sub sits inside one but has a landing to lay on for the second one.

Whoa, great video! . What do you think a shop should charge to build a custom box like you so expertly showed here? How much does it cost for the parts and product needed to build the box, and how long would u say is the total time it took you to build it. Its hard to tell as its on KZbin and all the video editing. I was thinking about doing this myself, im capable, but lack the garage and tools, im not very handy but am a fast learner. U r a pro, can a novice do it yourself, or is it too difficult? What do you think? Thanks! Jeff

6 hours of work time. 75 to 125 material cost. Each market decides what they can get out of it but a shop should be building multiples at a time to keep cost down.

And easily a diy project as I find those people tend to dedicate more time to it.

Makes no sense because if your making that comment you would know I said I am only using it for a quick demonstration but to never use it for an audio product.

Thanks for the view. Sorry your attention span is too short to take in what it takes to do fiberglass. Ps, first KZbin video I ever made.
