2:12 Big idea # 1: The Pleasure Pain Balance - In order to maintain homeostasis, every pleasure is countered by pain of equal magnitude. 5:06 Big Idea # 2: Dopamine Overload - Easy access to pleasure is is crippling our ability to enjoy life. 8:12 Big Idea # 3: Dopamine Fasting - Taking a break from dopamine will restore balance. To reset your dopamine brain, first abstain. 9:36 Big Idea # 4: Self Binding - Create boundaries to keep your indulgence under control. 12:05 Big Idea # 5: Pain as a Pathway to Pleasure - We can take advantage of the pleasure pain balance by pressing into pain. Pain is the price to pay for pleasure, BUT pleasure is also the REWARD for pain. Pursuing healthy methods of pain (like exercise) is better than any pill. I hope this video helps you in your daily life. It was an honor to collaborate with Dr. Anna Lembke. @@gregorykelly8000 Yes and this video is biased from a woman with an addictive mindset. Healthy minded people would not inflict pain to receive pleasure. Society inflicts pain through fear and eventually most give up, succumb, and accept that's the way it is. The outcome of the dog experiment was analyzed completely wrong on top of being cruel AF. I could have pleasure the rest of my life without ever feeling pain again if it were possible.

Overconsumption is a huge source of depression because get on social media and experience the feeling of missing out. We think that life is in the big moments (the vacations, the material items, the relationships) and we forget that it’s also the sunsets and the stillness and the fulfillment in waking each day.

Yoga is amazing for pressing the pain side for pleasure. Breathing to relax while your body is in uncomfortable positions and triggering a stress response, then using your breath to find calm and peace in a place that should be causing discomfort, is a very powerful way to train your mind to remain calm in situations that normally wig you out.

@DeeDee I wake up at 6 am Get ready for work, eat breakfast, and leave. I don’t scroll through my phone at all in the morning. Work 6 hours, work at 7 am and get off at 2 pm then I come home and eat lunch and watch 1 episode of a show while eating. After lunch I use the pomodoro timing 25 minute interval thing to do 25 minutes of editing photography or video projects I have, chores, and dog walking with 5 minute breaks in-between. Most days I just do like two 25 minutes sessions of creative work and housekeeping then workout for about an hour and 30 minutes. After that I eat dinner (no tv or phone), journal and plan my next day, then read and sleep at 11. *some key points: I don’t binge shows or game, and I don’t go on my phone that much unless im posting photos or videos. I post and get off. I also make it a rule not to worry about replying to messages until i’ve done my daily photo/video editing session so I don’t get distracted by my phone and lose creative flow. I also don’t talk to ppl on my phone 1 hour before bed time. Theres less dopamine in my life but it makes me happy cause science. **it helps a lot if you love the process of what you’re doing or working towards.

My "drug" used to be reading (fantasy & scifi) novels. Once my head was in a book i could not escape and it changed my mood and attitude when i was interrupted for whatever reason. Now, it's definitely my phone. Watching videos on KZbin is depressing because it's either negative news/content or seeing someone live a more "productive" life than me. I've made the rule at home that once i enter my bedroom, no phone. I even bought an old school alarm. That way i have a room, at least, where i can separate myself from everything and use it for what my body and brain needs (sex and sleep).

Just a thought …did you happen to feel invisible as a child? Were your emotional needs met with a genuine response and care? I grew up surrounded by alcoholics and consistent chaos. My mother was checked out most of the time. That left me in a state of continually finding ways to self soothe through stressful situations. Alcoholics are usually too wrapped up in their addiction to consider the feelings of those around them. Hence to balance the scales I became overly giving and caring about others but tend to choose those who do not treat me with the same regard unfortunately. Vicious cycle I’m healing from. I spend alot of time alone now with my dog as humans just seem to be too messy. Your sadly on point when you mentioned there’s probably many people who feel like you do. Everyone is just numbing the pain! Your not alone…

If you are a human is wrong to kill, unless you aren't a human. then its ok for us to take the life of any creature on the planet and disregard the function that beings perpetuates in the mechanism of the planet as a whole. Super super appreciate this difficulty message! Many people (me included) want to disagree or ignore as this countradicts the lie we are living... but like you said, lets face it head on!! We got ittttt

This was great, loved her book! I do think that our environment with easily accessible sources of dopamine is not the cause by itself. I think it interacts with our needs for meaning and connection. Combining her book with Johann Hari's 'Lost Connections' gives you a great vision of what changes we need in our society.

Amazing video ! All the questions I had about this, like being uncertain about the good effects, have been answered, and the fact that it is explained with drawings made it very easy to follow and digest the info for my adhd-esque brain. Thanks a lot !

I am a prime example of all the major NCDs you mentioned in this video: sedentary lifestyle, bad eating habits, addiction to television and a daily cannabis user. When I had gainful employment, I could sense a positive shift in my moods and a dip in my depression. As I was preoccupied and sober during those hours at work, my brain had a chance for those "goblins" to go away. However, working in factories, in telemarketing companies, and other soul-crushing industries made my depression worse (I've unfortunately worked in many fields). Not everyone has access to meaningful work, or the means to buy good quality food (as you were kind enough to mention), which leads to a feeling of desperation. That despair is preyed upon by unscrupulous individuals who promise you a different life, and chain you to a contract that essentially makes you their property. THAT is why people are depressed, and we chase any high we can to escape the melancholy lives that we're stuck living. It would take a true humanitarian miracle to get the impoverished masses out from under the greedy thumbs of their bosses, industrial standards, uncaring civil servants, heartless politicians, greedy senates, as well as the ever-increasing ways to get people addicted to these seemingly harmless means of escape. And even with that change, there will be skepticism and abuse of generosity which would only help to further increase the divide between the "HAVES" and the "HAVE NOTS". In short, there are certainly SOME things that the individual can do to improve their own lives, such as: eating healthier, exercising, and stepping away from electronic devices. But this is all mere victim-blaming if industries keep cutting costs by using inferior ingredients (and in disproportionately higher levels in lower-cost foods), withholding proper wages in order to bolster their own bank accounts, and creating addictive products to hook us. It's not prostitutes and junkies that need to be arrested, but the pimps and dealers. So with all due respect. Please use your education and clout to fight FOR the underdog rather than telling us to AVOID the big dogs?

This is the greatest sex Ed talk I have ever heard, this is the greatest heroine talk I have ever heard, this is the greatest AAA meeting ever, this is how we should be teaching and spreading real change. It didn’t work to tell people what they can do, simply teach people how to find balance in their lives ❤️

This is my favourite from Dr. Anna Lembke; it is because of her I was convinced my anxiety and depression was coming from excessive masturbation and weed use and I decided to make efforts to quit, today I am on day 10 with no plans to go back.

"Genius" is not all about an individual knowing a great deal on any given topic. You lay out each "Big Idea" and the accompanying corollary actions we should take in response in clear, readily understandable, and realatable ways. True genius is more about having the capacity to explicate the topic in such a way that you bring others to- and even past- the level of understanding they ever could have had. In this sense you are clearly a genius.

Amazing video, it really put many things in perspective in a way I've never really scene. Especially the concept of pain and how it can be just as important as pleasure and we can help ourselves restore the balances we lose from overstimulation and indulgence. I look forward to applying this immediately and hopefully sustaining it to the best of my abilities. One day at a time I guess, like anything else... 🤷♂️

Thank you for raising awareness about these issues ~ and one leading cause of anxiety, depression and mental problems is nutrient depletion/ lack of good nutrition. Another reason why people dont feel good in their bodies and are self medicating. Bless us all in this crazy mixed up world. Your health is your greatest asset for experiencing your rewlity in a good way ~ take good care 💜
