I rarely get to do any fishing through the ice, but I was surprised to learn through your videos that fishing in less than 5 ft can be worth trying! Thanks.

Hard to believe there's ice fishing in Oregon/PNW. I'd always thought the main lakes were close for season. Thanks for opening me up to a new hobby.

It’s been interesting this year watching to you fish shallow and successfully. Growing up we’re always told to fish stealth fully not make noise be mindful of our shadows. Here you consistently have fish swimming up to you with no problem. I’d have to be fishing hatchery ice to see that action, lol! Fun as always Tyler, keep em coming!

Have enjoyed your measured approach to fishing, in that, size and numbers are a good things but not the only things, thanks.... now for the question - do you have any suggestions on technique and lure to use when fishing prior to full ice out,,, have always heard that fish (stocked rainbows) use the shrinking ice sheet as cover and pitching onto that surface and pulling your rig off can be very productive// again, thanks for your programs...

I’ve found Kokanee using ice as cover but never Rainbows.

Fall spawners is what I said. They spawn in the fall which is why their tails and fins getting all ratted from digging redds.

What kind of lures do you choose to have it stand out from all the natural invertebrates that's in the water?
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. In these lakes where food is abundant I go for vividly colored jigs that stand out from the usual mix and white and red plankton they are feeding on. I also run larger lures but not necessarily big lures because these fish are dialed in on feeding on smaller prey.

I love to harvest and eat trout..... nothing beats a delicious pan-fried rainbow with a little bit of salt and pepper and even lemon! But Anything over 15" goes back all day. For one I can't eat 15" of trout in one sitting (I'm not the type of guy who stocks the freezer I like em fresh), also fish over that size have a higher possibility of containing pollutants such as heavy metals and pcbs, and finally I don't like keeping trophy fish. I don't put em on the wall or make a fish fry out of them, I like to feel them in my hand for a moment and then see them back in the water to be caught another day...

Do your tactics change depending on when you’re ice fishing stocked trout lakes (i.e. early ice, mid winter, late winter)?

I will go deeper as winter progresses

@@spiltmilt interesting. Is there a behavioral reason why they trend toward deeper water as it gets colder? Or when you say deeper, do you mean like fishing 10’ instead of 5’ of water?

Hi, awesome video like always! I purchased the Kenders natural shrimp jig according to your previous video. How does it hang underwater? horizontal or vertical? What knot to use?
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
Mine hang at an angle with the head up. It doesn't really matter as scud naturally swim around in various positions but you'll get a better hook up ratio if the hook point is up

Some of the lakes that I fish have low water levels due to drought conditions which causes quite a bit of the old weed beds to now be high and dry. Would you expect that the productivity of these lakes to drop over time permanently or will the weed beds re-establish themselves in new locations (in new shallow water that used to be deeper) or re-grow in the old locations if the former water levels are restored?
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
Productivity will probably drop off for this year but once the lake levels are restored those weed beds should bounce back pretty quickly.
