After selling my boat 20+ years ago, I stopped fishing except with friends (I was in the back of their boat). I'm now getting back into it with my own boat. I have a Helix 7 with mega down imaging and GPS. I found that the technology had left me behind. It's amazing what these units can do these days. All that said, I'm a bit overwhelmed on how to set it up. So I Googled it. I found your videos on this exact topic. Dude, you have now placed me much higher on the learning curve. I still have much to learn. But because of your excellent explanations and your examples, I'm a hell of a lot better at it now than I was. Much appreciated. I'm now a subscriber.

@FloppingCrappie4 жыл бұрын
When in clear vu mode on your 94sv, as soon as an object appear on the right side of the screen is when you are over the top of that object (brushpile in this case). The top right corner of your screen ( in clear vu) represents where your transducer is mounted on your boat. The image will start on the right side (below the transducer) and will move the left of the screen. As the image moves across the screen, the further is is behind your transducer. Hope this helps.

Yet another excellent video! I really like this series of sonar videos. It is very educational for me. My present sonar is only 2D with GPS and maps, I am considering getting a new Hummingbird Mega with 2D, DI, and SI. Something I would like to see in this series is for you to use the sonar to find a brushpile, set a GPS waypoint for it (maybe throw a buoy), move off a few yards, and then show how to use the GPS to navigate back to the brushpile (and catch a few fish). Thanks again for an excellent series. Keep doing what you're doing. Glad to see your subscribers are growing.

awesome instructional videos.. I'd like to see exactly what you do when you find the brush piles to then go back and stick your boat exactly on them and then fish them.. finding structure is fine but you are already past them by then,, what do you do AFTER you spot the brush piles with side imaging or down imaging with the boat to put yourself where you know the spot to drop your jigs?.. do you toss out a marker buoy backhanded as soon as your down imaging or chip blows up on the brush pile?.. btw I have a Minn Kota Ultrex that has spot lock and will have in a few days the Humminbird Helix 12 Chirp MSI GPS G3N Fishing Chart.. I do mainly crappie(pulling) in late winter and spring and striper fishing in SC.. I'd really like to look for brush piles when they go to the 25 foot range in warmer weather,, also shooting docks for crappie using the side scan just got easier for people watching your side scan instructional video and that's a blast too.. oh and I'm a subscriber for sure..thanks again..

Very helpful. Why is it that no one seems to use fish ID on the Humminbirds? I use it but haven't seen any videos where other people use that feature.
@FloppingCrappie6 жыл бұрын
Fish ID on any fish finder unit can be very inaccurate when it comes to viewing fish and cover. The problem with fish ID is that it assumes any hard ping from the sonar is a fish. This could be a tip of a branch in a brush pile or a tall stalk of weeds. When using regular 2D, you will be able to tell the difference between a fish and weeds or cover.

Okay, great video. But I just have one question, once I see the fish on the down Imaging where are they located? Behind the boat?
@FloppingCrappie5 жыл бұрын
anything you see on the very right side of the screen would be directly below the boat. as the image moves from left to right across the screen, that image/fish is further behind the boat. This is historical data. The transducer only reads directly below the boat vertically (it can see side to side with down imaging though).

Davis, Great video!====Need a little help with the affordable units you recommended. I'm so far behind as far as electronics. Running a 102c on front and fish mark 480 on console. (enough said) so anything you recommend is going to be far better than what I'm using. Because of limited funds for now will prbly look at used units. Is there one unit I can move front and back that would give me down, side, sonar and gps?
@FloppingCrappie5 жыл бұрын
You can move almost any unit from console to bow, it would take extra wiring from the battery, additional transducer, and an extra mount. If you can only afford one unit, mount it on a Ram mount that can swivel. This way you can turn it towards the front of your boat when you're fishing. New units are going to be around $400. Units like Garmin Striker, Humminbird Helix 5, and Lowrance Hook. If you buy used, you'll could save about $100 or so.

Just subscribed this past week. Excellent information and explanation. HB should be after you to do some of their work on explaining how to do some of these things. I have the HB 7 DI GPS on my trolling motor MK Terrova. i swear by the DI and images I see. One little point of criticism, hopefully you take it as constructive, is watch your direction when filming. You're getting a lot of shadows of your body on the screen and it becomes a distraction watching what you're explaining and seeing this movement going on. Otherwise very very pleased with the work you have been doing. Keep it up.Thank you from another old fisherman hitting 73 this month.
@FloppingCrappie5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing Brian, and yes there have been a few comments about the shadow/glare on the screen. I recently bought a screen protector which is supposed to reduce glare/shadows, but if that doesn't work I may have to look into building a hood/cover for the screen. the difficult part of filming these videos is some structure (brush, trees, rocks, etc.) can only be viewed when moving the boat in a certain direction, the sun usually doesn't like to cooperate. Thanks for subscribing and thanks for watching!

Absolutely have learned so much from your videos. I’m with Jake, I’m struggling to understand the orientation of what I see on my screen to what’s under the boat with down imaging. For instance, is what is on the bottom part of the screen indicating what the left part of the cone is picking up and as you advance up the screen from top to bottom are you moving from left to right of cone reading (speaking as if left is drivers left and right is drivers right). Hope that question isn’t confusing. 😳

Yesterday I tried out a new triple shot. The sonar works. It has so many features , hook 2 5ts, that it'll take me til the end of summer to figure it all out. Has gps charting and maps installed and is quite a lot of machine for not a lot of loot. I'd been hesitating because I put it on a aluminum jon with a 15 horse Johnson outboard. It's a duck boat with a deck and trolling motor. Poor man's bass boat. Surprisingly the sonar worked right off the bat other than I had the bracket upside down. The wire notch goes up. D'oh.

Ok, well I would try two things: First change your beam from 455Khz to 800Khz, this will hopefully give you a better resolution. If the doesn't work, change your beam back to 455Khz and adjust your sensitivity and contrast up 1 to 2 ticks above center. For your unit it might be around 12-13 on the scales. I usually have to turn my sensitivity and contrast up to see fish in the brush piles.

Well, both units use the same frequency when. It comes to 2d sonar. I am referring to the Garmin striker 7 sidevu series vs. The humminbird helix 7 si. The garmin is selling for $500 on Amazon, where the humminbird is selling for $700. Both have side imaging, down imaging and GPS capabilities. @FloppingCrappie5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it should look similar. It would depend on what frequency your DI is running at

Davis, once you move (or X out) of the display, or demo mode, for real time, does It stay out once you turn it off, or do you have to exit he demo mode each time you turn it on?

once you find the school, how do you know which spot to go back to? i assume there's a distance according to the chart that you passed over that you would know right?
@FloppingCrappie6 жыл бұрын
I actually have a video on how to vertical jig. I usually keep multiple buoys in my boat. when I go over the brush pile, I can through the buoy out to mark the spot. Here is that video kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqquhZusiKlgpLs
@DavidLe376 жыл бұрын
i actually watched that video too. i was more of asking how far back you know to throw your buoy. didn't know if there was a shortcut that moving your cursor back to the structure would say you passed that like 20 ft ago or 5ft ago. i know it depends on your mph and all that, but just seeing if your particular fish finder could pinpoint how far back that school of fish were.
@FloppingCrappie6 жыл бұрын
This acutally sounds like a should do another video on this topic. But for now, I normally use my 2D sonar to determine when to throw the buoy. On the right side of the 2D sonar is the "Scope", which is real time. As soon as I see cover start to show up on the 2D (in this case a brush pile) I will throw the buoy. This is why I use a split screen with down imaging, I'm not 100% sure how much of delay the down imaging is compared to the 2D. I will be filming a video on this tonight though.

Which helix has the side image and the down image scan?
@FloppingCrappie5 жыл бұрын
If the model says SI on the box, then that helix unit can display both side imaging and down imaging. If the unit says DI, then that unit can only display down imaging.

Do you every find Crappie hugging the bottom but are not stacked vertically?
@FloppingCrappie4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Usually in the fall months (October/November) when our water temps dip into the 40s and 30s, crappie will only be a foot or two off bottom.

Some very nice video, as a Wisconsinite I do a lot of small lake and St. Croix/Mississippi river (P4) fishing. Well done so thank you for that. As a casual fisherman who gets out 3 or 4 times a month it's good to see some of the more practical applications of electronics. One thought on productions is to use a sun shield for better viewing of the screen. The reflections can be a bit off-putting. I'm subscribing.

Thanks and yes I am looking into some screen to put on the humminbird to prevent sun glare or a different lens for the gopro.

i am new to using fish finders. i have the hummingbird 5 with DI. My question is when i drive over fish that show up on the fish finder, would they be directly behind me as i pass over them? and how far behind be would they be? sometimes i am not moving and i see fish just swimming across my screen.. does that meant they actually swam right under my boat? lol.. sorry. i am so fish finder illiterate..
@FloppingCrappie6 жыл бұрын
so to answer your first question, if you're using DI (down imaging) you are viewing directly below your boat (shown in black on my screen setting) and you're view slightly left and right outside of what regular 2D (two dimensional) sonar shows you. The cool thing about DI is you can set either a narrow, mid, or wide viewing angle to see more water to the left and right of your boat. To answer your question, if you see fish on DI in the black area or close to where the black and gold (settings on my unit) meet, those fish are below your boat. if you see fish further in the gold area (this would be on the bottom the screen, notice how far the gold area takes up the screen) these fish are either left or right of your boat, but not by much. As for how far behind are the fish, the chart speed settings can be changed to increase or decrease the scroll speed on your screen. The best way to know exactly how far behind the boat the sonar is showing on screen is to drive next to bridge pilings, dock pilings, or emerged trees (anything both above and below the water). you will be able to see the piling or tree on the DI if you drive right next to it. you can then eyeball or count how long it took to pass by the structure before it showed up on your sonar. if fish swim under your boat you will see them on sonar, sometimes they appear as horizontal lines (this means they are staying under your boat). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

How do you tell which side of the boat a fish/structure/object etc is on?
@FloppingCrappie6 жыл бұрын
I normally use side imaging to find which side of the boat the fish are on. Down imaging is similar to 2d (traditional sonar) in that it displays on the vertical screen which makes it hard to tell which side structure is on. I have found that fish or structure that show up in the gold/yellow part of the screen are further away from my boat, but I switch to side imaging to determine which side.
