You are one of my favorite KZbinrs. I wish I could find gems like these. Where I live there aren't any so watching videos is as close as I can get!

Thanks Nick. Oddly enough, Australia has plenty of gems and minerals, yet so few people actually go out fossicking. Cheers

So cool! And what a beautiful place! This makes me want to go down to the river bank with a spray bottle.

Great Video. Found some of my best finds retracing my path back. For me, and im sure as it is for most rockhounds, fossickers, its like the rocks/gems find you. And ive found some beauties in creeks and urban runoffs in and on the edges of some major towns. Every place is worth a scratch. South East Queensland has hidden gems everywhere.

Yes, Queensland has some fantastic gem rough available. Hopefully I can make my way up there and do some prospecting for Sapphires....

Excellent video sir! There appears to be a green stone at 3:36, about 11 o'clock from the junk stone you picked up. It kinda looks like jade.

Awesome. Hope these skills translate to rockhounding in West by God Virginia. Even if it doesn't watching you find beautiful stones is satisfying enough! If you ever come to rouckhoud in WV let me know! Lol Happy Hounding!

13:03 When you say that you "gem them up" with wintergreen oil, what does that mean? I can see that the stones immediately got much clearer, but what is it that's actually happening here? Do they stay like that, or is it just temporary? If I wanted to do the same thing, are there any other oils I could use? I'd really appreciate a reply, I'm a beginner gem cutter and I had no idea you could actually do something like this.

Man what I would give to go gem stone hunting in Australia. I'm in Texas and the only stones we have around here is limestone. The whole damn state, nothing but limestone.
@VintageTimeGems6 жыл бұрын
I thought Texas would be rich in gems and minerals. The US has some amazing gems and minerals and you guys host the best gem shows in the world.
@ElGatoLoco6986 жыл бұрын
I'm going to the Tuscon gem and mineral show next month. Can't wait. Texas is a pretty flat plain on an old shallow sea bed. No real geologic or mountainous terrain. So wherever you go, you hit limestone bedrock not far from the surface. There is one place in central Texas where you can find fluorite, topaz, and a unique mineral called llanite. Llanite is a pink pegmatite with tiny purple crystals. Not a gemstone but it makes pretty nice cabs. I've got 20 kilos of it in my rock garden. But I'm hoping to find some real gems (pun intended) in Tuscon. Supposed to be the biggest show in the world.
@ElGatoLoco6986 жыл бұрын
Having said that, Arkansas isn't too far from where I live where they have world class quartz crystals. Some real bigguns.

I am waiting for the warmer weather to make a trip to this spot. Been many years, but found a nice piece of smokey Quartz last time - but no where near the calibre of your find. Great video. Thank you. Ps wintergreen oil is the same as aspirin but more concentrated. I wonder if you popped the stones in a glass with a dissolved aspirin you would get the same result?
@VintageTimeGems5 жыл бұрын
I don't think aspirin with water would work as water is the main component, and has a low refractive index. Best time to visit Eldorado is after a heavy flood. Cheers

Hi great videos, i was wondering if you could cut some of the crystal quarts i have into an engagement ring. I found them in my hometown last month and my older brother is planning to get married so why not help him out with a engagement ring made from our hometowns moutnian range. Let me know if this is possible thank you

Can you do a video on cutting sea glass? Would it look similar to regular gemstones?.. PS: I got a bench grinder for Christmas, is there a way to facet gems with it? With a mast maybe?

I may have miss the information but what is the spray for exactly ?
@VintageTimeGems6 жыл бұрын
The water spray is to wash off the dust and mud off the stones so you can see what they look like. If not sometimes it's hard to tell what it may be.

Is this something that one could do anywhere? Because I'd love to find some minerals myself but I don't really live in an area known for minerals. I would imagine it's easier to find minerals near water sources?

If you really and truly like natural stone, you should have the nerve to leave the inclusions, provided they add interest.
@VintageTimeGems5 жыл бұрын
No point faceting natural stone with inclusions. Most of the time inclusions break off or chip due to instability in the stone. Nothing to do with nerve.
