This is it! I used to have Sport bike and didn’t have any issues with neutral. Recently I’ve bought 07 Harley Nightster and can’t find neutral, takes me 4-5 tries to find it. After watching this I immediately headed to garage, sat on bike and popped in into N on the first try, 6-7 times in a row. This is a life saver video, thank you so much for making it and also for being straight in the point and only two minutes!

Thanks for the video. Tried the hack. It worked (at times) for the 1st 10 miles. After 10 miles, the hack stopped working altogether. Engine heat? I've read so many comments from HD bikers (new and old) having the 'find neutral' problem. You'd think that a 100+ year old motorcycle company would not be having this issue. Have also ridden many different metric bikes - NONE of them ever had a 'find neutral' problem.

I tried this but it didnt work unfortunately however I recently got a new pair of boots that were thick and wouldnt fit under my shift lever easily so I adjusted the lever up one click to allow more room. Doing that changed the leverage and now I find neutral every single time. Id def recommend to try adjusting your shift lever if you're having issues.

I live on a tiny, Caribbean island now, and we pretty much only ride in flip flops here. Not a big deal since the speed limit is 24 mph. It's a little hard to use the bare side of your foot to push in the shifter, but it works.

Will try this on my Harley and let you know if it works or not . Probably will work cause you’re using more force to push towards the motor than lifting up on it . Just barely need to lift for neutral but we are used to shifting while riding so we try to get neutral too hard usually and go starlight into second . Update : went on 100 mile ride after watching this video and tried this out when pulling up to red lights and still rolling and it 100% worked every time . You can feel how different the shift feels when it goes into neutral when you do this , do it easy not hard .

I got a honda shadow VT 750 c for free from someone who didn't know anything bout motorcycles, and I have older brother helping me kind of restore it in a way to get it back on the road, my son is wanting to learn how to ride, and I do to because of it, I know a little just been a long time for me, like 20 years or so... finding out that the shadow does have a problem sometimes where it doesn't want to shift or gets stuck in 1st gear... but hopefully, this will not be an issue... motor turns over and all I have to do is see if she cranks and verify spark. then the process continues... I'm normally an auto mechanic I'm sure I can figure it out... +30 year BTW ... TY for the content AND I believe the shadow does have a light that comes on once in neutral...

Had an '09 Sportster from 2012 until this May. That trick never failed me in all the years I had that bike. Never had a problem. Hot, cold, running, off, didn't matter. My new bike ('21 Heritage Softail)? The damn thing seems to have deep personal issues with the very concept of "neutral". This trick does work, if the bike is off. Any other time, it's playing "hard to get" like my wife gave it lessons. It was more fun with my wife.

@@nfnf8529 It's still the same, even several thousand miles and a service later. I've just had to get used to holding the clutch or killing the engine and restarting. I found that I could hold pressure on the lever coming into a stop, and if the stop was long enough (a couple hundred feet usually) it would slip nicely into place. But I really don't like doing that, so I tend to avoid it. I figured it out tooling around a parking lot, but most of my riding isn't in parking lots. Lol

I actually quit my motorcycle safety course I paid $359 for because I got so outdone with trying to find neutral. I felt like I was a danger to myself and others because of it. I kept looking down.. I kept going to bloody second. My target fixation was on that damn neutral gear. It had me twisting the throttle (holding the clutch in thankfully) but it so worried me that I was going to mess up.... I did not have the finesse needed. So I got off the bike told the instructor I was out, and I can see I don't have the aptitude for motorcycles. I thanked them for their time and left. The instructor was shocked that I quit. We had only been on the bikes with engines on for maybe 15 to 20 mins. But my thought was if I can't do this..I can't do the rest of the stuff. If I get a chance to try motorcycling again I will try this. Thanks!

Sorry to be blunt, but no one ever got good at something in 15-20 minutes. During the first 2 hours of my two day motorcycle course, I stalled on every start, couldn't shift into second, couldn't find neutral and dropped the bike while walking it. Still came back the second day and passed with flying colours. I'm now two months into riding and loving every minute of it.

On my triumph Street triple I never had an issue, smooth as butter transmission. On my Buell XB9... It literally feels like stirring a bucket of bolts with a steel pipe...lol Now I got one of those disposable Chinese mail order "motorcycles" and got a little annoyed with the false neutrals...wonder if this tip will help...

I am going to try this on my little Venom 250 this week. I have been fighting with this from the getgo & then I keep finding myself in neutral at lights rather than 1st. From this and comments, this should be a big help to get my full endorsement test. Then check the tuning! It’s a used bike with under 2k miles.

Good hack! My imho explanation: if you apply pressure horizontally imnwards, you have less strength left for the upward movement, and clearly neutral needs a more subtle push than that applied from first to second. Giving some throttle also distracts you from the upward movement, achieving a more subtle upward push. In short: from first to neutral the push needs to be subtle

I think adding the angular force combined with the direction change may create just the right amount of internal contact, like a lip of two mated surfaces that the linkage normally glides right over, may be the magic key to this trick. It's not just less directional force like you suggest because that still requires human training and muscle memory. For this trick to be achieved 100% of the time, there is a mechanical explanation, not just a biological adjustment

Great video. I have a question, The green light that comes on when the bike is supposed to be in neutral but I have heard that the green light could be a false neutral, not really in neutral. Is this true. The way I could tell if the bike is in neutral is by rolling the bike back and forth freely.

The guy must have meant that when the green neutral light is on but sometimes the bike might still be in gear. The way I tell is when the green light is on, I roll my bike back and forth and when it rolls back and forth I know it is in neutral.

I'm thinking the cause of this is the auto tensioner on primary chain being to tight.I have had 4 softail deluxe and never had an issue finding neutral. Just got a 2022 Heritage and fight it trying to get neutral. Clutch adjustment is correct,so it has to be the tensioner. Any thoughts?
