A tip, if you buy a bold colour that you love but you are not confident to wear full-on colour, you can a apply a little bit of the colour and blend it in, you can work your way up to a full coverage when you get more confident.

Sira Mea Applying it over lip balm also sheers out a color. Or, try patting it on with your finger and then rubbing your lips together back and forth, in and out, to get a stain effect.

When it looks washed out then mix with somewhat darker shade and if it's too dark then first apply on hand and dab on the lips and slowly mix with lighter shade..

Something I don’t see mentioned often is how the natural colour of your lips affect the shades that you can wear. If you have fairly pigmented lips, even if you are fair in skintone, paler lipsticks will make you look sickly and bloodless, like when people put concealer on their lips to take out the colour.

Bang on! The standard set of rules are based on ideal (and not real) skin conditions, unfortunately, and cater only to a small subset of the population. Which is why I do my facial makeup (whatever little I wear) after I wore clothes and basic jewelry. Whether it is eyeshadow or lipstick, if I look in the mirror (with clothes and jewelry in perspective) and it looks decent, I keep it; if not, I tweak it. We can always mix shades to arrive at the right shade. And this is what normal women do :)

Susan Crawford I have quite dark mauvey lips, and I find that I look best in lip shades that are equal or more intense in tint than my bare lips - the exact colour is less important than the intensity of the pigment and the amount of white in it. Any lipstick with a hint of white in it will look chalky and “painted on”, and because you can usually see my dark lips peeking out through the lipstick.

Jyothirmayi Sharma yep, I usually have to test my makeup against an outfit too. I think that should go for all women - it helps you work out the balance of colours and how much “made-up-ness” you’re going for. Jewellery is an interesting one. I wear gold, silver and rose gold jewellery, sometimes mixing metals, because I have a mix of cool and warm undertones (though warm is more dominant). It’s interesting how different metals play off against different colours in outfit and makeup!

In the early 1980s my grandmother sold Avon makeup and all of the products were clearly marked with either a C, W or N depending on whether it was cool, warm or neutral, I have always wondered why other makeup companies didn't do that for their products, good to hear they are beginning to jump into the early 1980s Avon makeup sales tactics hahaha!

I always end up with a dusty rose gloss for day, maybe a slightly stronger muted pinky berry mauve shade for evening outings. As a pastel leaning Summer (colour me beautiful) person, I don't like bright matt lipsticks - even ones that are in my palette. Winters look best with bright shades, I think.

I love red lipsticks! And even though I have a warm undertone, I find I can get away with the cool tones (and in fact, prefer them) if I think carefully about the rest of my makeup. One great tip if you buy something that doesn't quite work is to try it with different lip liners. Something darker to create an ombre, in brown or plum or just a deeper red, can totally change the look, as it's suddenly no longer directly next to the skin of your face, so your eye doesn't notice the mismatch :)

Pamela&Steven En China I have the same problem but was able to find a great red today based on the swatch technique in this video. I bought a color that was too pink yesterday, so I went back to the store and compared other colors to that color until I found one that didn’t look pink at all. It was much more orange than I would usually buy, but when I tried it on at home it was perfect!

Thank you for the great tips on finding the correct shade of red lipstick. I'm warm undertone and have the hardest time finding the right red for me. Most that look like a basic classic red in the tube, when I put them on are way to blue. I have to go way over on the orange side for it to look like a true red once I apply it. I like your tip on keeping the lipstick that didn't work and taking it with you the next time you shop for lipstick as a reference for what to stay away from. I have fair skin, and have found I can't go too dark like you said, but I also find that light gloss tends to wash me out. This was great thank you for taking the time to do this Justine. This is my favourite video of yours so far Justine! I am a absolute lover of lipsticks, to the point where I have a makeup bag which contains all my lip products, which is as big as my other makeup bag which contains everything else (i.e. foundation, blusher, mascara, highlighters, eyeshadows etc). I have probably every shade of most colours you could think of (except crazy colours like blue or green or something like that). I tend to gravitate towards cool reds as I have a cool undertone, but when the summertime begins I tend to reach for more warmer colours just for fun. I just realized from watching this video how much my favorite lip colors lean towards the cool end of the spectrum. I like dark pinks and they are usually a bit on the purplish side. I also really like the texture of tinted chapsticks. They don't feel as thick on my lips as some lipsticks and they are great as I tend to have dry skin.

I have been picking lipsticks intuitively and it has been working well, looking back at my purchases I have only one lipstick on the warmer side, the rest is in the middle or cool tones which really justify my pale coller skin tone. Any color with a hint of pink looks well with me n does not stand out too much too.

I always thought that I have a warm undertone because I rock browns and golds on my eyes and it looks amazing, while silver and blues on my eyes make me look weird. BUT I love lipsticks on the cool side and those on the warm side, I like gold jewelery as much as silver, tending to silver and white makes me look radiant. So I figured I am neutral. Update: I was able to take the color I bought yesterday back to the store and swatch against it. I picked a much more orange color than I would usually pick because it looked less pink than the color I didn’t like, and this time the color is perfect! Thanks Justine! I find it very difficult to figure out which are the classic reds. I just bought a red lipstick yesterday that looked like a good “classic” red on my arm but when I bought it was bright pink on my face (same lighting conditions, clothing, and makeup). Previous lipsticks have looked terrible on my arm but ok on my face (not good, but not bad). It’s confusing because I’m very pale but on the warm side of neutral. No foundation or lipsticks seem to look good on someone who is both very pale and warm. Same goes for my friends who are very dark but cool.

In Ireland for a local brand called No 7, they have machine kind of thing in-store which finds your exact shade of foundation you need and based on the foundation they will also give a pallete of lipsticks that will suit you. I found it helpful.

I didn't have a problem with colour classification; I am classic winter, cool. But like Sira Mea, I also find mixing a solid matte undertone with a lighter shimmer still more comfortable. Actually what I am most comfortable with, although my nail polish is ladybug red, usually, is to match the undertone of my lipstick to the colour of the inside of my mouth, if that doesn't see a bit weird, so it comes out actually as, let's say, Sienna brick, which doesn't seem to fit any classification, but does work with my skin. Highly nuanced perhaps but a solution that worked. Experimenting is great fun. I used to think lips and nails should match; this works for me however. I'm also mindful of your advice not to over-emphasize both your eyes or eyebrows and lips; one or the other, and since I have very well-defined eyebrows that I don't need to worry about, perhaps the other features are not as important. Lots of fun!

After going through all the lipsticks I own, I've found that in order to find the colour I want I need to get something slightly warmer and lighter than what I'm thinking of getting (eg. reds with a bit of orange, or pinks with coral) as my spring complexion makes lipsticks look cooler and darker than how they look on their own. It's good to know when you're unable to swatch the lipsticks

:D since I am a strictly drugstore shopper with no testers, I find comparing the lipstick with the color of my thumbnail works for me, if the color is compatible there, it always works on the lip. With hair color, anytime I get a good chop, I ask the stylist to give me a chunk for testing hair color at home. I also saved a large peice from when I was much younger, knowing that my hair would get darker as I aged. I use it as a benchmark when choosing a new color.

I have pale skin and I find what suits me isn’t dependent on whether it’s cool or warm toned, but actually the tone itself; how saturated and light the shade is. I can wear true red, various oranges, and very bright, almost neon mauve pink. I can also make quite a sweet bright pink work, tho now I have red hair that is tricky! Dark colours, brick, burgundy, brownish red, muted reds and pinks look AWFUL on me. I have to go bright or totally neutral. I have a fairly small mouth and I think that is part of the cause - dark shades make it look even smaller! And dull shades wash me out. If I wear lipstick at all I need that pop of saturation to wake up my face. The exception to this rule is that I found an amazing soft neutral pink NYX lip pencil (it’s also great under the eyes) - and blending that over an intense bright shade gives me the softer feel that I just can’t get from choosing more muted shades in the first place.

Super helpful! I've definitely gotten into the hang of precision with color schemes and/or certain cosmetic shades, except am more iffy on lipstick shades. To the point where I feel lip balms and/or glosses, or lining may be nice (though I care in having lipsticks that suit me). I love trying on lipsticks but out of all the lipsticks I have, there are only 2 that I invariably reach for. My coloring changed as I aged, so the mauves and brown-roses I once wore are awful on me now, make me look like a Halloween ghost bride. Bold reds are too bright, make me look like a painted lady. A sales associate in a department store convinced me to try a light, bright, cool pink - Barbie doll pink, almost neon - and I thought no way, that's not me. Surprise! It's the one I always wear now. It looks great. It works because it's a sheer gloss. My other staple is a Revlon (drugstore) cream color called Blush, a warm coral-pink which adds a little brightness and warmth but isn't glaring. When I was younger I would never have chosen either of these. But these two take me everywhere. I would advise, ask someone who is trained in a cosmetics line, whichever one you like, to make a recommendation. Keep an open mind and you might be surprised.

Great video and examples. Experimentation is really important. I have light olive skin with green veins and my skin turns golden when tanned. But orange-toned lipsticks make me look washed out and dead, drain the life right out of my complexion. I can wear purples and wines like nobody's business, but didn't figure that out until trying all kinds of colors. : )

some lipsticks have the info around them if they belong to warm or cold tones can help you to determinate if it will suit you, depends on the colorskin you have .. some brands have this info like loreal and mabeline ones I think.. also happens with the blush too , they have the info in the package too aswell 😊

I like to layer my colors instead of just wearing one shade, so I have a number of colors that I keep to achieve the color I like. And BTW I really like your videos so informative and so friendly. Thanks!!

Merci, Justine! Good idea to create a gradient from neutral to extreme cool or warm. Following your advice, buying lipstick will be much more fun. I'll be sure to wear short sleeves when I go lipstick shopping. :)
