In this video I'm showing you how to fit a pull-up bar in a doorway. This is a really simple DIY video to ease us in to the new year. Unfortunately the instructions that came with this pull-up bar are absolutely hopeless. Apparently this particular bar is suitable for doorways from 65 to 85cm but I would take anything these instructions say with a pinch of salt. I have no idea whether this particular pull-up bar is any good but here's a link to it. Don't blame me if it falls on your head.
Here's some affiliate links to the pull-up bar I'm using - read more about affiliate links at the bottom of this description:

Thanks man. Got the idea. Ordered a similar one. First I thought of ordering one without the side bits to install but after seeing your video decided to order the one with the side bits to give more safety to the bar. Hope you are making full use of it in this lockdown. Thanks.

A few numbers. If one follows the instructions and relies upon friction between the rubbery ends of the bar and the door frame, then the friction coefficient will not exceed 1 (unless the rubber chemically adheres to the frame). This means the sideways force on the door frame must be about the weight of the pull-up person plus whatever safety margin one might build in to cope with the ‘impulse’ associated with the pull up. You’re definitely right about the screws. 😇

the friction on most ones holds up to a 100kg. the point of not using the brackets is that you can use it for multiple heights. it's friction and pressure that will hold it once you really twist and secure it. Good looking cracks btw.
@alexjulius69
@alexjulius69 2 жыл бұрын
Not worth it, just get 2 pairs and install them with support. If you're relying on the friction alone without support: 1) You're guaranteed to fall from the friction losing its grip sooner or later, and you can occur life-devastating injuries (like being paralyzed). 2) You'll destroy your door frame by squeezing it tightly everytime.

i'd use bigger and longer screws for sure. especially for something like this that's weight-bearing and under frequent use. if it's ornamental, those screws would be fine, but this is a functional item. in a lot of civil engineering projects, for example, they always over-estimate the use and wear of certain components and have a lot of redundancies to ensure safety. so if they build a highway that can carry X number of cars, they'll design it so that it can support 1.5-2X the intended load, and build multiple support systems in case one, two, or a few of them fail.

While the Amazon image is definitely disproportioned, the door frame must be about about 40 inches wide (way outside the specs for this unit) what is interesting in the shot is the width of steel showing either side of the centre section. The images of the bar on the American Amazon site are different from those on the UK site and show all the width adjustments on the ends. Does each padded section on either side of the central pad also rotate to open this gap or is all the width adjustment done with the end sections? It would make sense if it did as it would reduce the end adjustments and allow a fitting that would put the load closer to the door frame. In an 85cm opening a person with a wider elbow to elbow spread would be able to make a forward grip correctly. Remember that the reverse hold on a pull up bar with which Andy used as a demonstration, requires a narrower hold than that required to do a forward hold (as the Amazon guy is doing). I'm with Andy on his fitting. I certainly would not want to see anyone using it on a friction only fitting! Because it can be fitted that way does not mean it should.
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Rob! It only adjusts from the ends - doesn't adjust from the middle at all. The pics on the UK Amazon link look like more PhotoShopping nonsense to me - hadn't noticed that! 😂 Mine looks exactly like the pics on the Amazon US version. 👍

Regarding not over-tightening the bar.... won't the use of the bar, over time, tighten it? Or loosen it? Depending on which way you are facing? I am imagining that there is some rotational force on the bar when using it. We are needing to get a bar for our daughter for physiotherapy use at home and trying to decide what type of bar to get that will be the right mix of ease of installation and safety.

Badly written instructions, I agree, however they are totally usable without screws and damaging the frame. Infact it's using them that tightens them against the door. When you do a pull up, your palm is facing you, and it's turning the rod palm side down. Because the threads on each end are opposite to each other, doing the pull-ups from one side would loosen the ends, but from the other side tightens the ends against the frame. So as long as you face the right way, your pull up is tightening the bar against the frame, easily holding up your weight. The reason the screws are needed when hanging a bag or swing is that they don't turn the rod like your palms do.
@GosforthHandyman

I really, really, really wouldn't recommend this. Why *wouldn't* you screw it to the frame?? 😬

At least you got instructions! Somehow, I managed to tighten the bar and cannot remove it because it's in so tightly. I don't have a Kung Fu grip and have no idea, with arthritis from years of lifting heavy weights, how this was possible. Now, because I didn't receive instructions, I have no idea which way to rotate the outer bars to loosen them. Keep in mind, I already have 2 chin up bars close to the ceiling. This one was for reclining chin ups, so if I don't remove the bar, I have to crawl under it to get to my exercise room. Jesus f****ing Christ, this is so maddening. It looks like, from the arrows on the instructions I see on your video, that tightening requires a clockwise rotation. So, cheers to you for making this video or I'd be on my hands and knees in frustration ... quite literally! Now, I have to find that huge wrench!

Thanks! I boguht one of these pull up bars and I wasn't able to set it up. Now I see that the problem is that there are some missing parts. :(

Funny video and informative 👍 Are the o rings really 6 cm in diameter? I will struggle to fit that on my door frames

Just get a Perfect Pullup bar or similar that hangs on the doorway. No screws and (in my experience) no damage to the door frame. Easily removed when you're not using it. I've done thousands of pull-up's on mine over the years. It also has options for different grips. $30 and 5 minutes assembly and you're done.

Relying on the architrave is very risky - sometimes they're only held on by a couple of small nails. Just be careful! 👍

My niece got one of these for her toddler and mounted it about 90 cm from the floor. It works fine for him (weighs about 15 kg). Although when my girlfriend wanted to sit on try it, she fell flat on her face. Mind you, she weighs about 60 kgs. Luckily it was still only 90 cm high. Its proper shite and very dangerous for the producers to claim it works without additional fastening.

Exactly. I had my share of falling from this thing losing its grip when I was 13 and couldn't install it properly due to being incompetent. Luckily I wasn't an experienced athlete either and didn't do dangerous stuff, only shitty pullups.

@Gosforth Handyman At 6:56 the black plastic piece is for situp bar low locator mounts on your frame my friend, its as if all these companies that ripped off the original design have neglected to understand the full concept of the originals simplicity so they put an extra screw hole in the centre of the bar locator cups for it to make sense. (At least you cant loose it that way if not used but it would be nice if the destructions knew what it was originally for?) Then added a 2nd screw mech to ruin the quick no fuss interchange between the 2 positions. I must be getting old they dont make things like they used to lol. Just out of curiosity did it tell you how much bar clearance you should have from the top, because i made & fitted door stop width infills filled & painted to suite then discovered inversion boots i cant use without lowering the bar & making longer door stop infills. Anoying as f**k but all usefull things they neglect to state. I probably should have just pushed the mount cups to the door stop in a row then marked out 3rd space down both sides with top cup for simplicity? Having to relly on hindsight is not a best fit guide for clearance of knuckles feet & head lol. So they just neglected to bother. This was all years before covid lock down & the Hertfordshire council or local gym removed the 4 pull up bars from the park! When its gone & your locked up inside you truely miss it, like they want us to wither & die or join the gym with no income? As you can tell im not happy about the NWO.

Hi Andy, is the stop an integral part of the door lining on MDF frames? If not, longer screws into the lining itself might be a good idea.

No but that will take an incredible shear load - see some of my load tests of MDF. 👍

Andy, yes I've seen some of your tests, I was thinking more about how well the stop is bonded to the lining. MDF has a horrible habit of de-laminating (for want of a better word).

Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. How thick is that MDF from the door post? What kind of wall is it? Drywall or bricks? I'd probably drill wider holes and put wall plugs and then screws. But we have metal door posts in our house. Can you buy 2 mm wood drill bits in England? Here the smallest wood drill bit is 3 mm. When I want to drill smaller holes I need a HSS drill bit. And drill with them without watching, pressing or breathing, otherwise they break before making a hole of 0,00001 mm.

@GosforthHandyman 4 жыл бұрын
The stop is about 12mm and then you have the frame behind it which is very thick - 25mm I think, so 37mm min total. Screws directly in to MDF will give a much stronger fixing than screws in to plugs in MDF, but yes - for metal frames you'd need a different solution. I'm just using 2mm HSS bits here. 👍👊
