Thank you Andrew! I wish I would have watched your video 1.5 years ago when we first purchased our home. I was busy with other projects and as a quick fix applied grease to the tracks - bad idea. Tonight I replaced the garage rollers. Needed but did not solve the sound issue. It ended up being the darn shuttle on the track that was making the moaning and creaking sounds FOR 18 MONTHS. It is gone. Eliminated. I shouted to my wife to hurry downstairs so she could hear the garage close in peace. I tested at least a dozen times to make sure I was not crazy. Much appreciated!

The only tip to add here would be to clean the visible accumulated dust/gunk from any parts before spraying the lube, especially the lower track the wheels roll on. --Might as well.

3:32 good catch. If you have an adjustable toque drill and you able to properly adjust the torque(it's not much, those are just giant sheet metal screws, that's why they loosen up), then you can quickly hit all the screws(I think are are over 100 in most doors) and you'll be surprised how many are loose.

what the hell is an adjustable torque drill lol
@l337pwnage
@l337pwnage 5 ай бұрын
@@washedupwarvet2027 Most modern battery powered drills will have a series of numbers on the side of the collar near the chuck. That adjusts a slip clutch inside the drill that stops the chuck from turning when it reaches a set amount of resistance. The the higher the number, the more the force. It is not precise, and even a low setting can get screws very tight depending on how long you let it rattle, so it's best to start low. Sometimes they are also called "driver/drills" or just "drivers" if they just have a quick release chuck instead of a standard drill chuck. Also, those are different from "impact drivers" or "impact wrenches".

Mine has the plastic wheels and they were making a horrible noise. To fix that I got a precision oil bottle with a long fine tip and sprayed some silicone in it. Next oil the wheels where they are on the ends of the spindles on the door, where the plastic meets the metal. Don't oil the track itself. To get enough room for the oil, you may want to get a flat screw driver and wedge the wheel very gently and that is where I oiled mine. Make sure to unplug the opener first. You may need a few drops of oil for each wheel and you may have to run the door a few times to make the noise go away and if you do what I did it will get better with each cycle until it can not get any better. I have one of those garage door openers with the DC motor and it is almost silent. I never had a garage door opener so silent before. I am 40 years old and have heard some awful sounding garage door openers that would surely wake some people up.

I fixed it by turning the little blue button to make the motor less sensitive. Before that it would stop at the turn and retract back again. My garage was open for days until I did this simple trick. All the spray in the world won’t change that slight difference the track gets on a cold day.

I do lube the springs, but I do *not* lube where the spring seats on the cone. In the case of residential doors, the only thing holding the spring on is friction. I've only heard rumors of springs coming off the cones, so it probably won't happen, but I still don't like to tempt fate.

@saa1068

right, tracks should not be lubricate, it is just like you make road wet and slippery, it attracts dirt over time and makes it hard for roller to move across track.

Spraying the track and shuttle rail won't necessarily prolong the life. Especially the door track, you want to clean grease out of there instead of greasing it to prevent stuff from building up in there and the door jumping

ANDREW PLEASE HELP! I'm on permanent disability and can't drop another $150 for a door repair visit... My garage was only opening about 2 feet, I checked for obstructions and see none, I disengaged the opener to move it manually, it's very heavy but no issues. Now, when I activate the opener, (while disengaged) the shuttle still only moves the 2 feet and the chain/shuttle stop cold. I see no breaks in the chain, it hangs a bit loose but it always has and still worked properly. What can I check? Thanks so much

So many conflicting instructions that the track should be greased vs not-greased. Idk which is right.
@l337pwnage
@l337pwnage 7 жыл бұрын
the correct answer is "it depends" ;) If you have all-steel rollers, it can reduce wear and noise. If you have "all"-plastic (nylon?) rollers(no bearings) some grease type _may_ attack the plastic and damage it. But I think they should still be lubed with silicone, the rollers, that is. I think some people believe that a slippery track can cause the plastic rollers to slide and get flat spots. IMO, if that happens, it's more than just a slippery track being the problem. The rollers must aslo be sticking. Then there are nylon coated steel bearing rollers. The bearings should be lubed, but the track won't need to be. Personally, I happened have to all steel rollers, I just hose them down, and if that lube gets tracked around the tracks, I don't worry about it.
