Fantastic video! What separates you from other garage door videos is that you explain everything from A-Z, show all spots that we need to spray and lube, as well as where not to spray, and telling us why. Definitely helpful especially for someone like me who is started to do this type of maintenance for the first time. Subscribed!

Being a young widow + didn’t have any male friend to ask for any help much less advice on things my husband did. Or some things like this he never did. These videos are wonderful for a dummy woman like I was 3 yrs ago. I think I might now know more than my dad in some regards. My teenage boys keep saying just hire a plumber, an electrician, a contractor. In my rural Iowa town contractor's do not have any openings, they are booked out min 18 mos to past 2 yrs.. most repairs are under $20 if I can fix it myself.

Working on maintenance and thought I check out a few YT videos. I had seized bearings in the rollers. Cleaned first w/ brake cleaner. Running out tonight for lithium grease. My door is from 1950 and I thought my door sounded bad. Holy cow, I feel like I have a brand new door compared to what I heard on this door. This is a good thing considering I thought I would need to invest in a new 2 car garage door. I love having old stuff from the 50's talk about, like a rock. Anything made in the 50's is a workhorse. Nice job, but I'll take the old steel ball bearing rollers any day. Have a lot of work to do on my door. Yours is safer, back in the 50's no electric eye was required. I bought the house 9 years ago obviously the inspector missed a boat load of not up to code items. This being one. Thank you, great video. This lithium grease works well. Was told to use WD40 by brother in law. I wonder how his door is doing?

I echo the thanks. My Liftmaster 8550W belt manual said to oil the door rollers, bearings, & hinges yearly. Every 2-3 years we're to use a rag to wipe away the existing grease from the rail then reapply a small layer of lithium grease to the top & underside of the rail. Well, I didn't know what every part was as there wasn't a diagram & while it recommended a specific grease it didn't recommend an oil. You named & showed me the parts, showed how to lubricate them, & what with. I guess I don't need an oil after all. I'm going to keep & rewatch this video. Thanks!

I see there is a strut on the 2nd section, which is good, but it would probably be a good idea to put one on that top section too, especially with as hard as that opener appears to struggle. I wouldn't be afraid to rub the lube into the spring, but I wouldn't wrap my thumb around it. I'll risk a few fingers, but a thumb is just too useful. ;)

I am a garage door technician And I say there is no reason to spray in the seam of that hand cuz all it is is a cylinder That way it holds the two parts of the Hinge together I say just spray on the joints Spray on the stems of the rollers Spray inside the track And make sure to spray the spring because that's where a lot of the popping noise comes from Unless you have a Wayne Dalton door with a torquemaster And the problem with a lithium grease it leaves a residue And that's something you don't want on a garage door Because over time Lubricating the door is going to get a lot of build-up I use a oil-based product It May drip a little bit But that can always be cleaned up just don't over lubricate it And make sure to hit the bearing plates at the end of the shaft

My garage door parts r circa 1988 with the exception of the new Dura lift rollers I just replaced. I had to use 3 cans of gunk n the tracks to get everything nice n clean before I changed out the rollers. With that said, u r using a white lithium spray grease, but I want to know should I use the gunk spray to clean the latches/hinges first, and then add the spray silicone? @RamonAsher
@RamonAsher 4 жыл бұрын
@@l337pwnage Or until the springs themselves break...talk about loud, expensive, and dangerous. Speaking of...these springs in the video do look weak, given the slack in that belt, and may need to be replaced, or at the very least tightened, because the motor seems to be struggling, and the slack in the belt indicates a lot of weight being pulled, which the springs should be compensating for.
@l337pwnage
@l337pwnage 4 жыл бұрын
@@RamonAsher True, which is why it is important to set the up-force correctly. Then, ideally, when the a spring breaks, the opener will just just not lift door, rather than break itself or the door trying to lift it with a broken spring. Sometimes, commercial doors and door openers are strong enough to survive that, but, often, residential ones are not. I got lucky with my door. One day it would only go 1/2 way up, when I looked at the door, I could see one spring had broken.

Learned this the hard way through the years. Everyone kept telling me to use WD-40 on the door and I couldn't understand why it didn't lub anything. Yeah, I use the lithium grease now. Kinda makes one feel like an idiot. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't sell this for a living. Ya know, machine tools and consumable tooling and MRO supplies. Yeah, I feel like an idiot with this one.

@@doloresm7396 the guy who installed my GDO used a mixture of WD40 and motor oil! He did it at the direction of his boss. Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. WD40 will usually last roughly 6-8 months however if you notice a significant difference in lubrication strength before then, you can apply white lithium grease. 😎👍

I went to Home Depot this morning and got the blaster lubrication spray with the "Garage Door" written on the label. Unfortunately this is not the lithium grease that I thought it would be. My question is can I still spray white lithium over the silicone spray I've already made on my garage door joints?

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders thanks for your answer. What happens if white lithium and silicone mix? Yes I think I had white lithium before but I didn't remember. So I just followed the label which turned out to be regular silicone. And that leads me to ask you Why is the can that says garage door contains silicone instead of the white lithium? What is the difference between the two

@@goodcitizensinactionnow9601 Thanks for watching & this really depends on who you ask. At the end of the day, they are both designed to lubricate. Ive followed everything in this video and used the same white lithium blaster spray. My garage door is from Precision and its about 5 years old. Its still insanely loud. Ive used an entire can of blaster spray getting the springs, hinges, sides of rollers, and both sides of the guide rail. Nothing is working. Ive opened and closed the door about 40 times. Its still very noisey. Any idea what my issue could be?

Oh shoot! I found your video after watching others that said to spray the track and the black chain part that you were so careful not to spray 😭 I also used a silicone based product,, as I was told at the hardware store that in the desert climate, it's best to use silicone.. 😢 Is that even true? Have I royally screwed myself,, or is there some way to fix it? Will spraying those parts you said not to spray harm my door long term?

Try mineral spirits to get rid of any residue, and also use it during periodic maintenance for a final clean after cleaning out the guides 1st using an old rag etc. For the chain just a light brush of chain lube over the links does the trick.

+Mark some say once a year, I think I heard at least one person say every 6 months. I think just lube it once if you haven't yet, then pick your own timetable. Once you do it, you probably won't stop yourself from looking at it once on a while, lol. If you have kids in the house or that visit, however, then a once a year 'safety check" isn't a bad idea and you can decide to lube it then if you want.

Innoway you leave the key at the door as you don’t spray inside because it’s pointless and it’s going to get dust and debris inside do you want to use a silicone lubricant not white lithium grease like that because it is very unsightly and aching heart in overtime and it can mess up your door pretty badly I use PB blaster garage door lubricant and it works very well and I’ve been using it for years and I have not had a single problem and not really no dust compares on any of the door parts and it works for a long time
