2012 F350 Super Duty Crew Cab Long Bed I want to share my experience with everyone stepping into the “death wobble” game. I have been driving Chevys for the last 30 years, so I was a stranger to the death wobble issue that Fords are plagued with. I bought the truck used at a Ford dealer in October of 2020. It was in very good cosmetic shape and what seemed to be good engine and transmission condition. It had 185,000 miles on it. The tires were all new as well. In the first month, I had some serious vibration issues coming from the front left tire. Ford had used a third party to install this set of tires, so I went to the installer to have them checked. Clearly, the front left tire had a ‘rise’ on it. Even though the business acknowledged it, they refused to warranty it - and they only had about 100 miles on them. I had the tire put on the rear to get the vibration out of the front end. Fast forward to November of 2021 - This was the first time I had a death wobble on the truck. I thought it was a flat tire. It did it twice on the trip and I was perplexed because I couldn’t find any issue that would merit such a horrible gyration. After that day, it was intermittent and random. But as the months passed, it became more frequent. After having pull this stunt in big city traffic on overhead freeways, I knew something had to be done. I took it to an old school wheel alignment shop that I have been using for years. They were very familiar with the issue and kept a stock of the necessary Ford OEM parts to replace everything with. However, it did not fix the issue. After a couple of months, I purchased the SuperLift Dual Steering Stabilizer kit and the required 3-inch leveler (I found mine on AmericanTrucks.com) with Bilstein Shocks for the front. I took the truck to a local diesel mechanic, and he swore that the stabilizer kit would do nothing for the death wobble. He pointed out some parts he believed to have play in them and guaranteed me that replacing those would fix it. He was wrong. I did not have him put the kit on afterwards. I took the truck home and decided to do the work myself. I wanted to put in the shocks first and test it to see if that alleviated the issue before putting on the stabilizer kit. On removing the stock shocks, the left one was clearly shot and the right one was right behind it. I put the leveler kit on installed the new shocks with a new trackbar bracket to compensate for the added height. I had it realigned, and the problem was worse than before. I then installed the SuperLift Dual Steering Stabilizer kit and the issue stopped. I have taken it over bad spot I know that would throw it into convulsions before and it never went into the wobble. Therefore, for me, the stabilizer kit did fix the issue. There is no doubt for me that the tires are a part of the issue. But eating another $2,000 bucks to replace tires that have 10,000 miles on them is quite unattractive. For now, this will carry me to the point when I’m ready to purchase a new set. This has been my experience with the whole issue - not just conjecture. I hope it helps someone else trying to fix this idiotic setup by Ford. #superlift #americantrucks #bilstein

Thanks so much for sharing. How’s your death wobble currently? A shop has replaced all the usual suspected parts and never solved the issue. I installed caster shims but it still goes into fits over 60mph. Although they’re adjustable shims and I have not yet checked the alignment. It’s very possible I did it wrong. I’m about $3200 into this problem and getting a bit stressed.
@drjas638 ай бұрын
@@bipedal_earth_roamer The steering stabilizer kept the death wobble in check. When on a trip, one of the tire treads separated and put a new set of Goodyear Wranglers on, which improved the vibration the cheap tires used to produce. I have yet to experience another death wobble since installing the steering stabilizer kit. I know some on here are bent on it not being the fix - but I went through replacing most all of the front-end components, only to have the death wobble return. The kit was the only thing that stopped it.

Steering stabilizers is a band aid. The problem is caster. The ford Super duty runs about 1- 1 1/2 positive caster (not enough). Remove the stock bushing and install an eccentric bushing in the upper ball joint taper. You can buy aftermarket bushings to increases positive caster to 4-5 degrees. This will cause slightly harder steering but should not be a problem with power steering. Positive caster also helps the steering to return to center easier.

As a 25 Year Ford Tech here specializing in Front End work, this is not always the fix. Tires and incorrect air pressure are a major factor, but I install aftermarket adjustable Caster angle bushings to increase the caster angle to above 4 degrees. Stabilizer is not a fix. Bandaid at best. Castor angle increases are a must. Ford and other trucks manufacturer add limited castor to make steering easy at low speeds but that was originally derived from old vehicles w/o power steering on solid axle trucks. Compared to performance cars that are extremely stable at high speeds It has to do with the centering angle of the wheel in relation to the center line of the axle more castor more stability ford should add +2 to 3 degrees more than they do Castor bushings fix the problem even companies that make lift kits have in their instructions to add castor with alignment

Steering dampeners DO NOT fix or stop death wobble. That is one of the biggest misconceptions I see all the time. If you have death wobble the issue is caused by something loose like a bad track bar ball joint or bushing, tie rod/drag link joints are also super common, it can even be the tires causing it. Sure the stock stabilizers suck but they aren't going to be the root cause of death wobble, they just play a role in masking it. Slapping dual stabilizers on a truck with death wobble is like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound, not to mention the fact that dual stabilizers aren't really necessary, a quality stock replacement like the Fox ATS will vastly improve how the truck steers. Leave it to ford to keep throwing stabilizers at trucks when that's not even the main issue.
@russellaustin49882 жыл бұрын
Castor angle is the biggest cause. Ford has allways been steer easy not track straight.

Exactly! Gotta replace the worn bushings, struts, track bar, etc and correct the alignment. @7:15 you shined your light on what the most common problem is for DW on a SD and I'm curious coming from a for tech if your shop has the right equipment for tightening that track bar bolt to 406lb with not letting the nut/bolt spin. You can see the discoloration on the track bar bracket from it being loose originally, but regardless if I don't know what I'm talking about then can you explain how you made a video on how to do/ what to do if you have DW and your answers was "throw a dual stabilizer on it" without addressing all the new components you put on it. Also future points to look at is if the gearbox has excessive play. When you take off the drag link at the Pittman arm, go ahead and watch how much play is in the pitman arm being very freely able to move left and right while the stearing shaft doesn't move at all... thats another ford only problem 🙄

As stated by a few. You need to check all your suspension components before you just go throwing this thing on there. A good suspension doesn’t need a stabilizer, but if you have a lift and big tires your suspension geometry is probable a little off and this might be the only thing that keeps it from wobbling. Also consider the larger rebounding forces of bigger tires, shocks, etc. On my jeep I found that stock suspension parts are not enough once you lift it and put big tires on it. With larger suspension components it doesn’t even need a stabilizer. Once I fixed it all I put one on just for giggles.But i ran a dual setup for years before I figured this out. Dual stabilizers just puts more stress on the gear box too. Don’t expect it to fix your problem if your problem is bad ball joints and tie rods.
@deehuntley981321 күн бұрын
If you already have a problem, fix it before lifting and putting the big tires on because they won't fix your worn parts. On the other hand an $80,000 Ford pickup with 10 to 18 thousand miles and no slack anywhere shouldn't be having death wobble. It's a built in problem. But I guess if you can cover it up with bigger and better stabilizers, well then......

@@tomiamonico8855 I took my 2015 Jeep Rubicon to my "go to" front end shop and was told everything is within spec. That there is a tiny bit of slack in a ball joint, but not enough to cause a problem. And yep, I go to an after market shop and buy springs and parts to lift a couple inches so I could put big tires on it. But this shop told me that if I had the least amount of slack anywhere, I wouldn't solve the death wobble. So back to my "go to" shop and they replaced the ball joints in that side. Fixed my problem and I lifted it and put big tires on it and still no problem. No problem for forty thousand miles. Then four months ago it hit twice in a hundred yards. So back to my shop and I had developed some tie rod end slack. The starting point is having no worn parts and in spec. At least it has worked for me.

It LOOKS LIKE a ginormous steering shock, but it’s (obviously) got it’s own hydraulic power going to it. I see a lot of people talking about suspension stuff, and why you didn’t mention it. I realize you are obviously working of the assumption that they have checked the suspension for any signs of wear or play. But I do think it is worth mentioning that checking the suspension should be the first thing to do and if you dont find anything then I am with you it needs the dual stabilizer. However I have never seen a death wobble on a factory truck with no modifications and no worn out suspsension. (That doesn’t mean there isn’t a first) but I do recommend to any of my costumer who experience a death wobble to have a duel stabilizer along with upgrading the factory stabilizer with either a bilstein or fox… I would like to point out though the most common problem I have found with the death wobble that people over look is the track bar ball joint and track bar. I have had numerous times someone had it at another shop trying to fix a death wobble and they took it to me and low and behold the track bar and ball joint is about to snap

I may be able to provide your “First” example of death wobble in a factory truck, no mods, low mileage. 2017 F250 29,000 miles, first experienced death wobble on interstate in W Virginia. I knew it was coming but honestly did not expect it until about 60,000 miles. Found a dealer who had the replacement stabilizer and installed it the same day. YES Ford. Excellent service department. Problem solved? Last week; nine months and 2500 miles later, the death wobble reappeared while towing a 15,000# fifth wheel on I-95. The Ford replacement unit had failed. Rubber bushing and bolt pulled completely out of the end. I installed a dual piston aftermarket stabilizer and problem is masked for the time being. I am going to check all joints in the drag link, tie rod and track bar, then have caster set to +6 degrees. Pretty soon a new set of tires will be on the agenda. If you think the death wobble is scary, try it with a 41’ fifth wheel pushing you. I wanted to reach down and activate the trailer brakes but I couldn’t bring myself to take my right hand off the wheel. My wife refused to ride in the truck. She got into my son-in-law’s truck for the rest of the trip.

Hey I bought one for my f350 and it doesn't have the wire part going from the tie rod end to that longer shaft. Where can I buy that at?

thank you for the video. i have dual steering stabilizer shocks under my truck. whoever put it on removed the factory single shock that was there even though i dont think it would've been in the way. i like this one you just showed much better. the one that is under my truck right now shows rubbing wear on the shocks because the way it is manufactured, the shock hits the bracket that mounts to the diff. i either need to heat and bend it, or get another one or maybe something else. im not sure as of yet. i appreciate the video though. i may purchase the kit you linked. it looks much better than mine.

Last week I traded in my 2011 Dodge Cummins super 3500 mega cab and bought myself a 2019 F350 Limited for my 73rd birthday. The Dodge kept having the death wobble so bad it almost threw me off the road many times and it was hazardous to drive especially pulling my horse trailer! After only one week the F350 did the death wobble to me too - I was sick and tried to turn it in but would have lost thousands so I don't know what to do now. Will this fix the problem if I get one and have my local diesel shop install it? I wish I had bought a GMC but too late now :( I live in northeast Nevada - since it is supposedly certified by Ford would the repair be covered by a Ford dealership shop?

Don't buy GMC Diesel. I had one, and I didn't even have 80k miles on it when it started giving me all kinds of problems with it losing power while towing less than 6k lbs in hot weather. It was a fuel pressure problem that nobody seemed to know how to fix, and I met several others with the same problem. Then, all the sensors started going nuts whenever it got wet out. ABS, stabilitrac, and two other alerts would pop up. They would go away when it got dry again. Nobody could fix that either. Had it into dealers multiple times searching for a solution. I can get the death wobble fixed on my f250 SD, and not have spend 14k on fuel injectors just to find they didn't fix the problem. GMC diesel is the worst!

I just talked to a friend I haven’t seen in a while and he now has a Toyota Tacoma. Sold his stock 2014 F250 with 80 k because he couldn’t get rid of the death wobble. He said Ford replaced the whole front end and still wouldn’t fix it.

Is this an issue with th3 F450 as well? I've been looking at them, but have yet to drive one. I hear that the 450 has a terrible ride and handling.

To my knowledge the f450 has a different front end and doesn't have this issue

I have been a Ford person all my life since i started driving, 41 years ago. I have a 2014 F250, no lift, 265/70/17 tires. My DW started at just over 80k miles, mechanic checked everything, nothing loose, missing, overly worn, or out of place. He put a new steering damper on and i had him put new front shocks on and rebalance the tires. Seemed to fix it, but just happened again today with 80,400 miles on it. I'm going to try this dual shock damper and do the alignment with the stated changes. If this doesn't SOLVE it, Ford can kiss my A$$!!!

2015 F250 6.7. I have done everything to the front-end and three diferente alignments to fix the death wobble and now I have loose steering! When I’m going down the highway at about 75-80 it starts to shake a little and I have to keep correcting my steering 😡. Any advice?

A shop today told me the best fix for death wobble is a ball joint delete, which they say is the biggest culprit. Anyone else agree or have done this and it fixed it 100%?

does this mess with wear on tires noticeably or very minor? Im looking for a fix to this. I don’t think a steering stabilizer is the fix to this because I put a new one on mine, 2012 f350, and in 30k miles the stabilizer is wore out and the DW is back. Also, do you have any idea about the caster adjustments that people are saying to do?
