I've swayed away from Monte's teachings, but I always end up coming back, the best KZbin golf instructor hands down, great video as always Brendon.

Monte is a great teacher. One thing I took away from this video is: don't try to kill the ball! But what really interests me is the differing ways in which we feel the golf swing. When I perform this move, I feel like I'm firing my hips hard and first. Monte says it will feel as though the arms are going first. Fascinating.

I'd really like to see debate/discussion between Monte and Mike Malaska - because they seem to be very much in contrast on this move. Both cases might be issues where feel and exaggeration are what is happening in order to overcome an opposite flaw? Hands out and club head back - more horizontal VS steering the momentum which tends to make the club shaft a little more vertical at "some" point. (Bring in Tony Luczak & THAT would be an amazing golf instruction forum)

I am puzzled too! I started to implement Mike Malaska swing just and I hit my irons solid and I tried to hit my driver and I am so lost, even my 3 wood goes off. Could "Be Better Golf" bring those 3 guys together and ... That would Be Better! Since I have studied Mike Malaska, I improved so much on the short game. Putting, Chipping and Pitching, but I can't hit high irons, woods and and driver. Love the debate!

greywater909 they're working on opposite problems. Mike is trying to fix getting stuck (better players problem). Monte is trying to stop Brendon from being too steep (common problem to most golfers).

Malaska is 'fixing' them the wrong way imo. 'Stuck' happens when the left arm is deep across the chest and right arm is trapped behind the right hip (you can still be 'shallow' doing this). You can do this with decent sequencing and just shove the arms and club unit behind you or the lower half can outrace the arms and club unit which serves to achieve the same result. Hand path coming 'out' with a shallowing, trailing club is not 'stuck'. If people truly still have the club 'under plane' (another version of 'stuck') doing this (practically nobody!) then the solution is to rotate the body better in the later downswing which will steepen an over shallow shaft on plane through the ball. Which in point of fact is precisely what Garcia does. It's actually a fully loaded position to come from. If you rotate well and steepen the shaft back on plane like he does, it's totally optimal. If his rotation was poorer he'd be 'stuck' with the club under plane. But he doesn't. It's balancing out these two opposing intentions. If your rotation is poor and you don't want or can't change it, don't look to get as loaded as Garcia. Or, load it like he does and work on stronger rotation and flush it like he does. No real wrong or right here. Just more or less powerful. But there is a minimum requirement of shallowness if you want to hit consistent pure golf shots. Steep is not a desirable or workable option. Unless you're Phil Mickelson. But you're not...

I'm still a beginner, but works best for me on the course is the thought: "Trust your alignment, and swing out toward first base." When I try to steer the club face into the ball and toward the target - over the top, slice city here we come!

So hands coming out but keeping trail elbow tucked in yes? I was having trouble because i was driving elbow away from body. Brought in some shanks
@plentyofouts

The shaft itself has to be rotated clockwise against the counter clockwise rotation of the body as you move down. This is the counter intuitive stumbling block. Hogan was right when he talked about a sidearm throwing action. For the hands to come 'out' but the shaft to 'lay down' there has to be external rotation in either the right forearm or upper arm and shoulder or internal rotation of the left forearm, upper arm and shoulder. Or both. You can even do it with just wrist conditions. Flexion in the left wrist and extension in the right. Most good swings have a combination of three or more of the above. Some however only do a combination of two of the aforementioned.

Have you been practicing this brendon ? I am a handle puller like you. Seems like what Monte is suggesting would like 6 months or more to really integrate in your swing. Is that how you feel as well ?

The real question is what is more valuable to you as a player.... hitting shots that go where they are intended, or hitting shots 20 or 30 yards further, but your directional control goes out the window? 80% of club head speed is generated through gravity accelerating the club head. (32 feet per second squared) The arc length of a golf club head's travel is about 11 feet in total because of the lag positioning the club head's arc movement. So how fast do you think it is moving while being accelerated at 32 feet per second, per second? The answer is right about 105 miles per hour if you don't try to help it. Even more if you if you maintain your spine angles because then that gravity drop pulls the trialing elbow in front of your body naturally. Also physics dictates any change in direction results in acceleration being generated (Newtonian Law of Physics) which is why the release allowing the club to extend outward, increases acceleration still further. Couple that understanding of knowing your body's physiology (very few vertebra are meant to rotate, in fact most movement is in the first 7 vertebra located in your neck region and none at your lower back.) The idea is a piston movement of the legs to create the pivot, not your lower spine twisting, as the vertebra in your lower back has flanges that stop it from rotating in such a manner. If you utilize a neutral grip and transition using gravity, you will hit the ball straight as long as you do not try to manipulate the club path. That gravity move sets the club path all by itself if you let it. That 20 yards lost to not trying to rip the cover off the ball can be gained back simply by choosing the correct club for the carry distance that the shot requires of the player. This is why players like Rose hit the ball so far and look like they are swinging easy. Because they actually are. They are using gravity and a full release to add acceleration, coupled to a piston motion of the legs to pivot the body in order to maintain their balance.

If my hands at address position were close to my body then on downswing, my hands go out and clubhead back, I would shank like crazy. I much prefer the Malaska swing..it is much more consistent. Again, with Monte, you have to rely too much on timing to get the clubhead square.
@ronturitto2738

John Capell then this may not be for you. The point of the video is if you’re steep coming down it will shallow you out. I tend to get steep and my miss is off the toe. When I do this drill I literally flush every shot and can’t hit a shank even when I try. Remember it’s a feel.

Moving the body forward is not easy to just stop doing it. I’ve been fighting deep divots with low left ball flight. I always go forward and my head drives down to the ground. It’s been 2 years trying to fix this

If you are wondering about apparent contradiction between what Monte is saying versus what Mike Malaska is saying on this topic, search for a video by a Malaska Golf instructor Milo Lines called "Which Power Source Fits You". In that video, at t=2m43s, Milo specifically talks about the differences in moves to shallow a club.
