How to fix F150s scraping noise while accelerating

My truck started doing this and with a little bit of research I learned that there is a vacuum line that runs from the driver side front firewall under the hood to the driver side front tire and the lines were dried out and brittle I went to the auto parts store and spent $15 and about 45 minutes of my time to replace all the vacuum lines that were dry rotted and it solved my problem hopefully this helps just add me a comment or a like if this helps you I hope so thank you

My 2012 F150 3.5L started making the same sound during light acceleration. In 4x4 mode no sound. Found a small leak in a vacuum line near the drivers side firewall near the vacuum booster. It is a small thin tube going to the solenoid and check valve. Taped it up with electrical tape and proved it fixed the problem. Then I bought a pice of vacuumed hose from a local parts store and fixed it permanently. Thanks for this video. It was short and clearly recorded the sound.

After two long years of this horrid sound I finally figured it out!!!! I’ve been to and asked several mechanics about the noise and no one could figure it out. But today! Today I found out the problem and solution! It’s was a freaking snapped Hose clamp!!!!!!! That’s it! The clamp was snapped in half allowing the heat shield to rattle against the exhaust..... I’m so happy right now.

Went through this with my 2017 raptor. That's not "grabbing," it's GRINDING of the gears. You are right about the fix though - it's the vacuum line not keeping the 4WD gears disengaged. You know you have this problem if you shift it into 4WD and the noise goes away. The reason the noise goes away when shifting into 4WD is because you're allowing the vacuum to shut off and the 4WD to fully engage. Bottom line, you have a partially engaging 4WD when it's not supposed to because of the vacuum leak.

My 2012 F150 started doing this after I replaced a gasket in the upper radiator hose - had to take the throttle body off to get to everything and I've heard what sounded like a vacuum leak ever since. Took all that apart, thinking I jacked up the throttle body gasket and that maybe that was whistling, but that was fine, and it's been a mystery ever since. Only makes noise between 1500-2000 rpm and letting off the gas immediately stops it. Haven't tried putting it in 4 wheel to see if that makes it quit, but I will in the morning. Thanks a lot for posting this - it's been driving me crazy.

My 2015 F150 was doing this same thing. I replaced both sides IWEs, wheel bearings and replaced the check valve and solenoid. I tested all the lines vacuum and it all checked out fine. So I got desperate and I pulled the vacuum off the solenoid and drove it for a while with no sound. I then checked the vacuum coming off the engine and it was fine. So I was about to replace the lines but decided to buy a Ford check valve and that is what finally did the trick.

After reading your post, I went out and drove my truck, same exact grinding noise. While making that noise, I switched it to 4x4 and bang, it quit! THANK YOU for helping diagnose the prob. Now to figure out how to fix it.

Yes, with it making noise, switch to 4x4 and it immediately quit. Once confirming this, I hunted down and found the broken vacuum line. Took it to the dealer and had the line replaced. No more noise.

Check the check valve going to the 4x4 vaccum silinoid the check valve can be bad not allowing enough vaccum going to your IWE leaving them partially engiaged.

Mine had it.. rattle upon acceleration.. stops when you back off. if you turn on 4 wheel drive it stops. Dealership said it's the IWE's and check valves so they are replacing them. I saw another video where the heat sheild was all ripped up too and rattling.

My 2016 had a similar sound that only really occurred around 1000rpms and randomly when accelerating. I could only hear it with my windows down. It occurred with 4x4 on as well. Turned out to be a snapped hose clamp that holds the heat shield onto the exhaust.

@@akinvests Motorcraft YG360 vacuum checking switch needs replaced. 8 dollar part. 2 minute change. Your hub is trying to engage the 4x4. Very common.

@@chandlermckenzie84 by your firewall up top in the back. It’s between two rubber hoses. Think of where the brake fluid goes on an older vehicle. If your standing at the front of the vehicle, staring at the windshield. It’s on the back right : up top. So you’ll stand at the drivers side front wheel to change it. Unclip the hose, pull the lines apart, and the new part will replace existing part that is in between the two lines.

so i got it to make the noise with a tech in the car so they looked at it, found nothing wrong. said they needed to call main ford who made them check a few things which i assume were fine because they are replacing my transmission in 2 days. hopefully that will fix the problem. also a note i find it easier to make the noise switching between tow haul sport then back to regular transmission mod especially when the transmission is warm. also it seems to happen more when the transmission drops 2 gears to pick up speed. that is at least my experience with a 2017 f150 v8 12k miles. hopefully that helps more people claim some in warranty repairs.

acceleration only , and it was the 4x4 wheel locker in front was not getting the vacuum to hold the lockers open so they were dragging.

I have a brand new 2018 Ford F-150 XLT and mine did this off the lot but I can't replicate it to the dealership manager so they won't accept my claim. It doesn't happen every day so it's hard to find a way to show them the issue. They basically told me to come back once its happening.. I am sooo glad you posted this video, as I will try and use it as evidence. Was the fix just vacuum lines? Can it be a sensor? Any help would be appreciated as Ford is giving me a hard time right now.

Anyhow, I’ve seen videos on how to fix the newer models but for the 2011-2014 F1 50s, What do we do to fix this? I got the same sound in a 1997 Lincoln Mark viii. I'm thinking it was the transmission. I wonder if there are any hub actuators for the traction control system. These are the same transmissions that are used in the f150s and other Ford vehicles. letting off the gas when this happens stops it immediately. Now I just estimate the rpms before it does it, pedal shift, and just glide, and repeat when needed. it died do it occasionally if I'm not paying attention.

2009 Ford F150 XL SCREW...Exact same problem but not very consistent. It's normally at highway speeds. Did it a month ago and stopped. I thought it was bearings except it would stop when I backed off the accelerator. Came back today and was pretty loud...loud enough for an old couple I passed to look at me in!

Soooo...if you have 4wd engaged it should not make the grinding noise because the hubs are already fully engaged.

It helped, but it is still their at 900 rpm.. it’s been doing this for a few years and I’m at 304,000 km on her. I’m sure replacing the whole vacuum line would probably fix it, but it’s not hurting nothing and until it does then I’ll fix it properly 😉

Under acceleration you actually loose manifold vacuum, when you let off the throttle it will build vac. I think you are confusing manifold vacuum with venturi vac.

That’s your IWE solenoid or check valve. When you’re driving put it into 4h and if it stops the sound that will certify the issue. It’s a 50 dollar part and 5 minutes to fix

Could be the plugs and coil packs. Could be the 4WD Actuator. Could be the front and/or back U-Joints. Could be the Torque Converter. Could be the Slip Yoke. Could be the rear Axle Bearings. With Fords, it could be a number of things. Take it to a Mechanic and don’t throw money at what it could be with DIY’s.

William LeBlanc the truck has 89k on it Itvhas new plugs and the coils were in good shape It bags new pinion bearing s and carrier bearings Transmission was services and shiftkitted It is slightly lifted in front It sounds like it could be wind hitting and rattling something But of course in nit sure It does have a squeaky tensioner I believe Because it does squeak on full throttle shifts

Mine does this as well. I find it typically only does it within the first few mins of driving, and that it stops immediately when I take my foot off the gas a bit, and then won't do it again no matter what I try. Until a couple of days later... Was that your experience also?

Happened on the first day driving it out of the lot but then it stopped and every time I go back to show the dealership it wont happen but then later that day it will. They even took my truck for two days and couldn't replicate the issue so they won't accept my issue. That's the dang sound thats hard to explain to anyone because I cant produce the noise with my mouth smh I changed out the check valve and the solenoid to no avail yet. Guess I need to follow it further down but this does help to know it could be the same problem just not the right spot in the lines. Maybe one is disconnected, who knows but better than taking to a shop to change out my differentials, bearings, etc.

On my 2010 it was the vacuum line that goes to the passenger side IWE, it was cracked. Just follow it by the way it's cover with loom. It runs all around to the front of the motor and then goes up to the chasis and from there it goes to the IWE. In my case it was cracked in the area where it runs on top of the chasis I went to Napa auto parts and got 5 feet of vacuum hose that cost me about 4 dlls. I hope this help you guys.
