MFC-J4510DW: This is a repost of a message I posted on her other video showing how to actually remove the absorber box and service the felt pads. Thanks for taking the time to produce this video...just some FYI for those trying to clear messages, etc...after removing the 'chip' attached to the absorber box it became apparent that the chip is actually a moisture detector whereby if it is too moist, (i.e. full of ink) then no matter what you do to clear messages, if the felts are wet this will generate the Error 46/Ink Absorber Pad Full error...all the magic keystrokes, number codes or finagling won't clear this error until you address the full pads which I simply removed rinsed under warm water, then let dry and reassembled...Hope this helps someone down the line...Good luck.

I have the exact same printer as yours and have just emptied and cleaned the ink absorber pad and dried the felts inside. I updated the software and it now works for zero cost. Many many thanks for excellent videos. That has saved me having to buy another printer. John

Thank you bunches!!! Cleared the number after fully cleaning the absorber pads. It does still give the maintenance error "full" (probably did not wait till the pads were fully dry) but now it does print again. So far so good 🙂

Not really. The print heads need to be cleaned, and that ink has to go somewhere. Re: the resetting, perhaps, but resetting won't solve the problem of a full ink pad.

hi after i go into maintenance after pressing *2864 and the right hand arrows to get the 'up' button the machine comes up error 46 and pressing the the up arrow just gives a beep and doesn't move the messages on at all to 'purge' ... ive tried unplugging the machine and redoing a few times.

Hello there, after cleaning the absorber pad and reassembling going into maintenance mode still showing Absorber pad full , I enter code 46 and what shows is EXPORT TO CARD. First great videos. I have watched them so many times trying to correct the Ink Absorber Full issue that I have memorized the codes in order. Here's the problem that I hope you can solve: I followed your video about cleaning the pads and purged the pages. That worked for about two weeks and then the ink absorber error came back so I purchased a new pad. I installed it as described in your video. However, after purging the number of pages again, which stood only at 182 after the first purge, the message "Ink Absorber Full." I went through the purge process two additional times and the same message appeared Machine Error46. Consequently, the printer will not function. Any suggestions?

Thank you ! You also need to clear the flush count. I don’t think I made this clear in that video, so I made another one on resetting both the flush and purge. I hope this resolves this for you - and I really need to redo the ink absorber video because I did brush over some steps too quickly :)

Thanks for the link to the other video. Strange thing though, I unplugged the printer overnight and when I plugged it back in to do the purge of the flsblk and flsclr, the error 46 message was gone. Nonetheless, I did follow your terrific video and we are back in business. Probably didn't have to purchase a new pad but I did mangle the plastic covering on the old one so just as well that I did. By the way, love the accent!

Thank you for the video showing how to change the filter on our Brother J4420DW, mine looks identical to yours, but is not going to the same place after I punch in "*2864. Mine doesn't go to "maintenance", instead it goes to "Error46" at the top. And while I can use the over arrows to get the window with the up arrows, hitting the up arrows only results in the error beep because of the Error46 code. Basically it has me in a logical circle not letting me reset error46 because of error46. Any help would be appreciated.

Followed these instructions to the letter, also the other video on how to access the maintenance mode and clear error 46. I now have a printer which will print the test page but it will not print anything else. I have checked it's connection to the network and everything appears fine in that respect. Initially it would print a test page submitted from the laptop but no longer does that either now. Any suggestions, as I have no idea what to do from this point?

Shut it down and unplug for 10 mins, and then reboot your laptop and power on the printer. Try to print from your laptop again, and if it doesn’t work, try reinstalling the printer software

It worked with J4420DW but two notes: I saw "Machine error" after entering *2864 but I pressed on regardless. There are two PURGE items on the list. One PURGE alone, and another PURGE. After clearing just the second I got "Ink Absorber Pad Nearly Full". Then I cleared the first, and no error messages.

What the heck?! The printer died right after doing this! I have an MFC-J4510DW in front of me. It could no longer print due to ink absorber box full error. I opened the printer and the pads were indeed full of ink. I followed your instructions from the video "Clean or replace the ink absorber box on a Brother printer - Fix Error 46 on MFC or DCP". I made sure everything was perfectly dry: cleaned with paper towels, used a hairdryer and left the pads in front of an air fan for many hours. Reinstalled everything and then I followed the instrutions from this video. This all went fine and worked . I then printed a test page which also went fine so I was super happy; the printer is fixed again! Then I shut off the printer. I started installing the drivers and turned on the printer... but nothing happens! The printer is suddenly dead?! It won't power on anymore. It was working fine just before! What the heck? Either there is ink leaking somewhere and shorted something or the machine went dead due to going in maintanence mode. It must have something to do with the latter? I mean, it was working fine until I shut it off. I'll have some explaining to do as this is a family member's printer. Dang it! EDIT: I searched online and found these instructions: 1. Unplug the power cord from the printer. 2. Press and hold the Power button. 3. While still holding the Power button plug in the power cord 4. Wait for it to start, when normal home screen displayed release the power button. This works! The printer powers on again... BUT (!)... when I shut it off, I can't get it to power on again. I have to redo the steps above.

It’s possibly the drivers. There’s really no need to update them, and the drivers released since 2019 were basically just to stop aftermarket ink refilling. I would download drivers 2018 or earlier, remove the current drivers and install the earlier ones.

@@Knowhow1 Hi, thanks for replying. This printer isn't mine so I didn't have drivers installed to test it. I downloaded the AIO-software/driver package from the Brother website and installed them in a virual machine. Do you have any idea where I can find the pre-2018 drivers? I have just reset the purge and flush counters exactly as shown in your video. I am still unable to start the printer. I have to hold the power button, insert power cable and wait for it to start. Then it works fine until I shut it off, again unable to power up by pressing power button. Really strange. And this didn't happen before. Also, black isn't printing but maybe it's clogged/dried up as this printer has been sitting still for a long time. Already used the clean function but no luck. EDIT: After removing and reseating the black ink it now shows as completely empty so that's why I can't print any black. The printer remains to have the issue of not starting :( I checked the firmware version (tried updating) but it's already the latest version. I have set the printer to factory default. It won't start unless I hold power button, plug it in and wait to load to home screen. It's annoying but at least the printer can print. I'll have to search further why it's doing this unless you have any other ideas?

Does it say the cartridge is incompatible ? Deselect automatic updates for your printer, uninstall all the current firmware and install the older firmware, and hopefully this will be your fix.

There is only a link to Firmware Update Tool. support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcj4510dw_us_eu_as&os=10013 EDIT: it doesn't say incompatible cartridge, just that it's empty. I don't have the printer with me anymore at this time (at family member again). I'll order refillable cartridges and ink bottles. Hopefully it won't show unrecognised but the set comes with new chips so it should work I guess.

I've followed the video, cleaned the ink pads, dried them initially with a blow dryer and put it all back together. Also found the instructions for purging the various codes including FLSBK and FLSCL. I still am receiving the ink absorber full message. I took it all apart again and the felts are definitely dry. Any suggestions.

The message can still temporarily appear- Try unplugging the printer for 20 mins, and hopefully the error will disappear, or often it will clear on its own after a day or two. Did you also reset the purge count ?

Thanks very much for that. I had initially succeded in gaining more copies on my MFC-J4510DW (not one you have listed I see) by following this video. After a few months and many more copies, I got the message back and tried deleting the Purge counter, FLSCL and FLSBK counters but to no avail (error message remained - 'Error46' and printer refused to print). I have since followed your other video on emptying and cleaning the tank etc: I could still not clear the error so tried cleaning the sensor card that detects the ink in isopropyl alchohol and drying over night (as it was a bit inky within the board material so thought it might give false info on tank level). Still no joy. When I get to the stage of entering *2864 I get a brief 'Maintenace' followed by beep and "Machine error 46". Pressing 80 then gives something like "01:35 12:48 OK". I have then tried various things like 2783 and 80 and it won't clear and stay cleared. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I can't bear adding to the plastics mountain!

Hi - yes it should work - and you’re right in that it’s only buying you time until you need to clean or replace the ink absorber box. Try this method first- it might give you a few months of extra use (depending on how much you use the printer) and when the ink absorber is truly full the error won’t be able to be overridden this way. I have a simple vid on cleaning the ink absorber box. The parts and installation will likely cost a lot more than getting a new printer, so it’s worth trying to clean yourself.

Thanks for this. I have a problem with the black printing. When printing the test-page I get evreything fine, except the black matrix. But the black text (S/N and Ver. info at the bottom of the page) is perfect and clear. Is there a way to fix that using maintenance menu.

Hi - Did you clear the purge count ? There is a code to deep clean the nozzles and ink tubes... When you enter maintenance mode, enter 7 and 6 and you should then enter the cleaning menu. Scroll left or right until you get to CLEANING BLACK. Enter 3 and press Mono / Black Start. It should then say "CLEANING" and once finished will return to the home screen of maintenance mode. @@aurthorthing7403 Yes the top disassembly will be pretty much identical. The ink absorbers are the same model and are located in the same place. You may just need a thin flathead screwdriver to pry open the motherboard cover rather than just using fingers, as the device panel I believe is shaped slightly differently, but everything else should be the same.

I’d say your ink absorber pad is truly almost full and needs replacing unfortunately... the reset works when the page count creates the error, but I’d say yours must be also sensing the absorber pad needs replacing.

Well, after printing a few copies, the error went away on its own. It must not do a check each time and when it did, it cleared the error.

This was a God send!!!! My printer is a MFC-J4710DW. Why the hell isn't this procedure in the user's guide??? Or at least the advanced user's guide? I love m MFC-J4710DW, and I don't ever want another printer!!! Brother does not make a new printer like this one where you can close the top off and have a flat surface. ***I always buy ONLY BROTHER INK!!!! That in itself should keep Brother supporting my printer. It's 12 yrs old or so, and still works like day 1 !!!!!!!! How many other printers can claim that kind fo reliability !!!!!

I have attempted this reset several times. My page counter off the main menu says 26456. I have replaced the ink pad but the machine won't reset. Help! I don't want to have to buy a new machine. Brother MFC-J4220DW

Hi, i am getting a "Machine Error46", this one have appeared, after i have cleaned the "ink absorber" and was following instructions how to get reset the "ink absorber message", but now, i cannot print. Please help

Sometimes you need to unplug your printer at the wall, and leave it sit for 10-2 minutes before powering it back on. This should clear the error 46 message,

Tried it on MFC-J4510DW. Would not let me get past the first blank at the bottom. Just put up the red X.

I've checked with your particular model, and you'll need to press the *, 0 and # keys on the LCD (in this order) on the screen which immediately follows the screen with the blank tab at the bottom. This should get you into maintenance mode. Follow on with entering 8,0 and follow the steps thereafter. If you have further trouble, Try this again except only key 0 and #.

This worked now for my MFC-J4420DW (I removed the error) but I have been printing with this error for years without an issue and only removed it because I was messing around with the maintenance anyway

Just tried the same process again and the "PURGE" is set to ZERO. (No copies printed) The maintenance message has appeared again. Any thoughts?

Hi- is the error still displaying? Sometimes it can take a couple of days to clear the message

This did not fix my MFC-J4620DW. When i entered *2864 it came up as an error on the screen. I have no clue how to fix this printer.

Did the printer beep and “maintenance” displayed at the top of the screen when you entered maintenance mode ?

I followed these instructions and purge the counter multiple times but the error is still there! Help!

Shut down and unplug for 10 minutes then load back up. Let me know if this fixed

@@Knowhow1 After 10 mins. unplugged - Still same error message "Ink Absorber Pad Near Full" - printer works but scans only one page via Easy Scan app

@@darshnashah8251 do maintenance mode again and clear both the purge and flush counts. You might have flshcl and flshbk or similar which you should clear both of. They should be next to each other on the menu selection. Ensure the number resets to 0 when you clear each. If all are 0, some people have had the error msg stick around for a day or two before it disappears.

I went through this rest process, but I still get a message that the absorber is "near full". Is that unavoidable?

It can take a day or two for the message to clear. If the message hasn’t cleared within the week, I have another video on how to physically clean the ink absorber,

I followed, cleaned and dried my JW4510DW, still same error. I only see one container.

This didn't work for my MFC J6520DW although the Purge is reset to 0. The ink pad full error is still there. I got the ink pad cleaned and the man in shop thought some of the codes around the purge were 00000 to and maybe they shouldn't? If you've any suggestions that would be great. Make sure to reset the flush counts, too. If the error is saying ink pad is full,even after a clean, you just need to try a hard reset. Unplug the machine for at least 10mins and boot back up. I have a vid which gives more description : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp26gmSfpcelbsk
