Does p2096 mean a cat converter is bad even if the cat converter code does not pop up along with p2096?

Hi, i'm having problem with P2096 for 2-3 months. First, I have tried changing two O2 sensors, the error code come back in a day... then I have tried changing air filter cartridge, again P2096. The car sometimes turns off while driving, and sometimes I cannot start it from parking etc. Mechanical says it is bad catalyst, and i must change it, but I'm not sure is it really Cat. I have some more fuel consumtion, and some sound when car is cool. Hyundai i20 petrol is the patient Thanks.

I've had this code for 5 years now with no noticeable impact on driving. Fuel consumption is normal and engine runs smoothly. How likely is either issue, leak or sensor fault? One is wayyy more expensive than the other...

You seem to have a better understanding about this topic than most. Please help me. I recently installed long tube headers in my car, with catalytic converters. Following common practice, I also installed sensor spacers. This eliminated the P0420 and P0430 codes, but I'm now getting P2096 and P2098 codes consistently. The car is a 2018 Mustang GT. The headers are 1 7/8 inches going to a true 3" cat-back exhaust. As I'm sure you know, the pre-cat oxygen sensors are wide band, and the post-cat sensors are narrow band. The car has an aftermarket tune. It runs well, and the air/fuel mixture hovers around 14 (I assume it's lower than 14.7 because of the 10% ethanol, 91 octane gas I'm running), and the tuner probably made it a bit rich. My mechanic confirms there are no exhaust manifold, exhaust, or unmetered air leaks. The tuner won't turn off the post-cat sensors, which is understandable. Questions: can you confirm that P2096 and P2096 actually indicate that the mixture is too rich (rather than lean), because the bigger exhaust is throwing off the post-cat oxygen sensors? Second, if this is the case, is it ok to continue to drive like this, occasionally clearing the CELs? Please help.

Hello, these codes you're getting were lean codes. Please also inspect the injectors on bank 2 while rotating the engine if some smoke coming out and check the purge valve if faulty. It is possible to drive with these but continued exposure to improper mixture could soon cause problems with other components.

I put high flow cats in my car and got this code as well. What do you think it is and I should do?! Thanks
@nondainc
@nondainc 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Elton, you should inspect all the related parts to identify the possible source of the issue. Check the exhaust corners and exhaust pipes for leaks and fix if you found any. Also, check the oxygen sensor on bank one and replace if you found any signs of damages. If the issue will still persist, please take your vehicle to the nearest repair shop for further diagnostics.

Probably not enough heavy metal in the a/m hi-flow cats to satisfy the downstream sensors. The newer the vehicle is the more sensitive they are. Don't even get me started on subaru's. They are the worst. Probably have to search long and hard to find a tuner that will break the law for u, and turn off the downstream sensors or adjust the air fuel ratios. Which i believe isn't even possible with the factory pcm. So u would need a stand alone fuel system, something like mega-squirt... gl

Would this also leave a sulfur/ rotten egg smell or does that mean it’s my catalytic converter?
@nondainc
@nondainc 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, oftentimes the smell occurs from the incorrect amount of oxygen in the catalytic converter, which leads to excess sulfur in the fuel tank, creating the odor from the exhaust system.

So I Have had both p2096 AND p2097 since like last April (2021) and back then, the codes always disappeared when I filled the tank up. That went on for a few months, maybe a little longer, where it went away after filling up with new gas. I took it to a friend who works at Honda and he put it on the lift and looked for leaks. Couldn't find anything. The car is a 2017 Honda Civic Type R with full bolt ons and a custom dyno tune. The check engine light or codes do no go away after getting gas anymore. It did go away for almost a month after my last tune on December 27th though. But now it is back and staying there. Car drives great though. Don't get it.

Hello, have you inspected the wiring to the O2 sensor for any issue? We also suggest getting your vehicle visually checked by your local mechanic for further diagnosis as you are receiving multiple error codes.
@joescivic
@joescivic 2 жыл бұрын
@@nondainc Yeah. Even wasted money on a brand new o2 sensor. My mechanic at the dealership couldn't find anything. He did mention doing like a smoke test to run that through and see if the leaks will show that way. Never got back to him for that.

Hello, we suggest using the octane rating gas that Honda recommends.
@joescivic
@joescivic 2 жыл бұрын
@@nondainc It takes premium, which is 93 octane. Never had an issue before. Plus a lot of us Type R owners actually use higher octane or a mixture for racing just fine. I might have to give it a more thorough look to see if there are any leaks, preferably on the charge pipes that go to the intercooler, since I hear those tend to leak sometimes.

This fault is occuring in our 2010 bmw x3. I was reading that hoses with cracks may also lead to excess air getting into cylinders. First place to look would be leaks around the catalytic converter?

@@nondainc Hello again. I had the car serviced by Ford, got a phone call that the computer did not find any error, they also checked everything, and the check engine light was deleted. The mechanic claims that the check engine could have come on because a new oxygen sensor sometimes needs to calibrate itself after being installed. Is this true or maybe ford is playing with me? Thank you and regards!

My Subaru dealer spend OVER 5 hours (on 2 separate occasions, 3 weeks apart) trying to figure out this code... They checked EVERYTHING possible and still can't find the cause of this code... They just told me to keep driving it! It's a 2018 BRZ with only 41000 KM on it... pretty disappointed with this situation...
