How to fix peeling clear coat

I bought a basket case Saab 9-3 convertible and have been fixing it up to flip it. Paint is something many people send out to have done, but you can do it yourself. I hope you enjoy this video where I show you how to fix that peeling clear coat and other minor imperfections to make a run down looking car into a nice car.

So happy I found you,ive had 6 Saabs and I finally found one with less than 80k on it, a 2005 Saab 9-3 ARC Convertible, and I have a chipped-up bumper and a few spots I need to take care of as well...when I popped the hood I realized it wasn't the same as my last 2002 9-3. Still, once I saw 4 screws exposed the injectors and plugs I was so happy...the person had "rigged a few things to last only a week or 2, but for me, they are easy fixes, he sold the car to me and said there were no issues, and when I got halfway home the check engine light went on, the rear brake light went to toast and the hydraulic fluid leaked out. then had the balls to tell me he would fix cyc 4 and the roof for me for 250$ lol batsht crazy land...

Did something similar to my 2006 9-3 sportcombi. Was my first time trying anything like that. 197k miles on her and she’s still going. Gutsy to do that outside and if only one bug took a wrong turn then you did pretty well. Looks fantastic! At one point I thought you lost that hood but your patience paid off. Thanks for sharing.

That is amazing work! Great video! My only question sir, when you applied the compound you wet the surface while you buffed out the application. What is the advantage of that process?

The water provides a sort of lubricant and prevents the compound from drying out.

The paint match looks great! I have an 01 9-5 Aero wagon in midnight blue metallic. You said O'Reilly's did the mix?

Yes O'Reilly's was able to mix it and inject into an aerosol can.

@@coreysgarage6389 My clear coat is kind of fading...when I touch it has powdery white substance...not much fading, but little white powder spots here and there? Can I just wet sand with 600 grit and apply just a clear coat (without applying base coat) ?? Because fading is not very much and I think factory base coat is still intact

thank you for the video. Had a question - the spots I am dealing with look like your hood. Most are smaller but have a couple that size. Would it be worthwhile and a good idea to start with 1000-1200 paper instead of 600-800 so I can avoid base coat disturbance if possible? May take longer, but its towards beginning stages and if i DIY I am trying my best to not disturb the base coat. Thank you

You could try it but it’s very unlikely you will be able to feather the edges of the clear without disturbing the base coat.

Awesome stuff! The clearcoat on my '06 is horrible, and I haven't yet decided what method I want to take for addressing that, but this gives me some good info should I go this route. A question: You mentioned fiberglass and filler, but then you skipped past doing that part and just showed the finished work. For one who is completely new to the world of bodywork, could you give any more directions, or maybe make or link to another video that addresses that portion directly?

What is the dry time between coats? Can you let us know what you're using for pads on your equipment during each step?
