How To Fix TrackMaster Duck & Classic Thomas & Friends Toy Trains

It's time to repair my Classic TrackMaster Duck that did not work from the toy factory. This 2009 Mattel toy uses a similar design to the TOMY Thomas toys. These earlier Thomas toys are more complex Vs the very simple design of TrackMaster 2 Thomas toys. The electrical circuit relies on solid bent wire thats not soldiered to other parts. This tends to be the weakest link in the toys design because the electrical circuit can be easily disrupted by rust, dirt or just sloppy toy factory work. The gearbox in this toy is a little tricky and be prepared to have gears fall out when the gearbox is split. To me it's worth fixing this toy because these Classic TrackMaster Thomas toys are far nicer than the TrackMaster 2 Thomas toys. I show a variety of Classic TrackMaster toys still in box from between 2010 to 2013 and it's amazing how much has changes in only a few years. Sure these older toys were a little more expensive but I believe they are well worth it. Sadly I feel some toy companies are not producing the right style of toy that are needed to combat the iPad / Screen Generation children. This is not the time to be simplifying, cheapening and shrinking toys! Now is the time to be making the most awesome toys. Toys that look awesome and play awesome. And again I use the amazing TOMY Streamlining Thomas as the pure example of whats need to get the children to play with the toys again.

Wow, here's a video I remember looking forward to back in middle school... and I'm starting college in a few weeks. I actually just fixed up a Duck last week when I was fixing some spare engines in my parts bin... I've never had a ton of issues figuring out how any of the gearboxes go back together because of how they mostly go together one way. The old dark blue track TOMY engines that can reverse are some of the worst. The worst repair I ever had to do was a TOMY Steam Along Thomas with a completely corroded battery compartment about three years ago. I basically had to pull all the metal contacts out and shape a mix of paper clips and tin foil around to get a connection. It's an incredibly cramped compartment with three double AAs plus a standard Thomas/Percy style motor all inside a slightly longer than usual Annie. I also had to rebuild part of the coupling, but that was only as bad as fixing any C cell tender engine. A little shoddy looking back now, but at the time I only owned one and I wanted it to work. I forget classic Trackmaster disappeared about half a decade ago. There's a few I missed out on like that Mattel version of Duck's Close Shave. I've got the older HiT Toy Company version but neglected to pick up that version. I believe those TOMY fish (and the green flatgar they're on) come from the Thomas and Freight Cars set. It's mostly a Japanese exclusive but it got a Kmart release in Austrailia. The cross-faced Thomas with white running plates you own also come from these sets. I don't think the spring is why it's running slow. The spring pushes a gear out of the drive train that allows it to freewheel when turned off. Part of the switch pushing into place when on pushes the axel to compress the spring and push the gear into the drive train. When turned off the spring expands back out and removes the gear from the chain. Have you seen the new Trackmaster "Turbo" engines in Austrailia yet? I know they're pretty new in the US so I doubt it, but it's got a cool logic system driving it that I went on too long about on a Train Tsar Fun video...

Maybe TOMY are not allowed to promote the Thomas toys outside of Japan. Put it this way I have never ever seen the TOMY Thomas toys land in a shop in Australia. It's all Mattel Thomas. It may be like the Hornby / Bachmann Thomas toys divide, it was only in Australia where both could be found in store. But even now Hornby has stopped the Thomas stuff, and the Hornby product is awesome.

I have been following Mattels share price and right now it's around $15. Back in Jan 2014 the price was $50. Their share price has huge variations over the years. But the most worrying is against a share market thats been on a huge swing up Mattel have done the reverse. It's a complex problem. The fact that toys have a second life via online sales sites wouldn't be helping either. Put it this way I would rather hunt down a classic Hit Toy Company Thomas set Vs the new Trackmaster 2 toys of today. The collapse of ToysRUs, children on iPads and brand bloat in the toy market are all factors. But I really feel the iPad Screen Generation of children is the biggest factor. Thats now been a strong 8 year trend and it's not going away. No toy company can compete with a free game on the iTunes store.

I came back to this video after a few years from not understanding a think abt how they work to understanding every little thing, and I was looking when he was putting it together is that you completely forgot the tiny spring that goes on the gear for the switch. Very important because the spring is what majorly helps make a trackmaster 1 train be freewheel when it's turned off

Hey Leo, I don’t know if you still look at comments on old videos but the spring that you lost essentially shifts the gear into engagement/disengagement it’s not that big of a deal if you don’t have it, but it will prevent your Trackmaster engines from free rolling because without the spring, the gear has no resistance and can slide into position with the worm gear when tilted a certain way

Leo Seeing You Finally Fix Duck Was A Great Thing To See But Also A Very Infuriating Thing To Watch Because You Had No Idea What You Were Doing XD. As for the Spring that you lost, it is a very Inportant part in the way Duck works. Let me explain, the Spring that goes on the gear makes it so that when the switch is turned on the gear moves to activate all the other gears will spin. And when the toy is turned off the Spring pushes the gear away from the others so that the toy can freewheel. So that Spring is a very Inportant part in the way Duck works.

It may help to watch the video. Duck still freewheels when he's off as he should. So what does that missing spring do again! To me that spring is more like a spacer. And sure I did not have a clue what I was doing, but that's all the fun to see me fail.

The Spring May Feel Like Spacer, But If You Turn Duck On Youll notice That His Switch Wont Go All The Way (Sometimes) Because the shaft of the gear is sticking out and preventing the switch from going all the way because the spring is bot there. But like I said: this only happens somtimes.

I can say that the "Duck's Close Shave" pack you have there is based on the Series 2 episode "A Close Shave" (Originally broadcasted on the ITV network here in the United Kingdom on 5th November 1986). Very unusual for Mattel to actually manufacture something to do with a VERY old episode 27 years after it's premiere. I mean "A Close Shave", not to be confused with ANYTHING ELSE that has this title. (Wallace and Gromit in: "A Close Shave" from 1995 is one example, don't ever think that)

I think when the Ducks Close Shave set was made it was before Mattel had total control over the Thomas toys. Once Mattel had full control things really started to change and we started to see some major reworking to the toys to what we have today. Mattel, Inc. is an American multinational toy manufacturing company founded in 1945. They were the owner of HiT Entertainment after buying it from its previous owners, Apax Partners, for a sum of $680,000,000 (USD) in 2012. I think the biggest changes were happening during 2014. It's quite amazing how much has changed in such a very short time.

There was a ERTL Diesel (I think it was dated "Britt Allcroft (Thomas) Limited 1993", It was definitely Diesel) at my current school here in my part of Britain when I was in Year 6. I still have all my old trackmaster trains from when I was younger, and I can confidently say I wouldn't buy new trackmaster 2 trains. The quality of the new ones seem so much worse. When I go up the loft again, I'll have to get all the engines out and make sure their batteries haven't leaked. I have quite a few that would be over 10 years old now.

If they did leak the crome on the contacts will likely be damaged like mine were. I cleaned out the old battery acid sanded the battery contact points and they worked great.
