Ya don't go about disassembling the valve by prying off the nylon chute. With water off, raise the knob then grasp the stem with pliers and unscrew the knob off. Then drop the stem and the remainder of assembly falls out the spigot. You don't need that entire kit unless the nylon chute is cracked or warped. Only replace the O-Ring then re-insert into the spigot and re-attach knob. Easy and inexpensive fix!

That is fine and dandy. However, I have called several manufacturers and they now weld the knob on. I can't find one like this with a screw off knob. That makes it very difficult if not I'm possible to just replace the gate. I guess the idea is to purchase a new spout too. Makes more money.

Try holding the stem with pliers, and wiggling the top knob off.... that's the way I did it and finished the repair in reverse, from bottom up instead of having to force the diverter onto the stem, I put the diverter on first and the stem up through the hole, and attached the knob.

Just an FYI most older diverters can be unscrewed, but some of the newer ones companies have decided since so many people just buy new spouts to make them solid, if you see my video you can see me do almost the same thing as OP did in this one.(Only with an unattached clawfoot faucet.) We had a someone comment about it being easier to just unscrew, but it was just not possible as the knob was one piece with the stem. So if you can not unscrew yours it is very likely this new annoying version. It sucks, as you can not just replace the special washer anymore... I hate it, but at least it is less than $10 to buy the whole new diverter kit. Good Video by the way. Thumbs up!

Thanks for the video, just had to replace the hot valve stem and seat on my hot side but want to take care of the cold side and diverter gate- I think the gate guide metal( faucet) has been eaten away, though as it's all pitted and deformed I'll have to look into it and see if there's even enough meat to warrant a repair- house was from the late forties, not sure how up to date anything is besides the paint between tenants. I think the grease in the center of the rubber seal ring might prevent it from sealing effectively, that it's supposed to pressurize and slide into the faucet. Maybe applying some grease to the actual faucet apperature? I'm using the green Permatex (advanced ultra disk brake caliper) lube, but would you recommend a specific brand, formulation or consistency?
@ETPCYT

Hello, Damz, you are most welcome for the video. Thank you for watching and your comment. It sounds you know more about grease than I do my friend. I wish I could be more helpful. I am not an expert in these matters and I am not sure you even need to apply a lubricant. I think you may be right about the grease and it not allowing to work as effectively as it might. The old washer was really broken down and I was hoping that the silicon would help protect it a little. It sounds like you are doing a lot of work on your house.. All the best my friend. ;)

There are different brands of faucets.. mostly similar I believe. I am not sure on the part names either. You should be able to pick up the whole little kit at a local hardware store.. (ace, home depot, lowes, etc) If not try to find the brand of shower you have and do a search looking for that particular set. I don't know if they sell each piece separately. I hope this helps.

I tried doing the same but it's still leaking water when the shower is on. I think it's a design flaw of the diverter. It's too loose and washer with hole doesn't form a tight seal. It seems like a poor design to me. Also what does the grease do? Does it harden to form a tighter seal or does it provide lubricant so it can slide against metal better? Or does it form a rubber laminate to help preserve the rubbery suppleness?
@ETPCYT
@ETPCYT Жыл бұрын
Hey JON, I don't think the diverter ever forms a completely watertight seal.. I think the grease preserves the rubber from breaking down

I used CLR to remove the limestone buildup and smoothed out the rough edges and there's some improvement but still leaking and even drips to the back of the spout on the inside. I think my spout is just worn out. Must be at least 15 years so I bought another whole new spout. Honestly it didn't even cost that much more. The diverter part was $8 and a spout assembly was just $30 and now drips only a little at the front. Much better. You mean the part you pull up to get the water to come out of the shower head? There needs to be enough water pressure to hold it up.. also if it is not creating enough of a seal it will not stay up. If you have a lot of build up of minerals from the water, that can obstruct the gate from functioning correctly.. Maybe try making sure it is free from build-up. I hope this helps

I did this and it didn't fix my problem. I'm going to try a replacement spout, but I'm thinking it may be the main diverter valve. The most frustrating thing about the gate diverter instructions is they tell you so simply take a small screwdriver and pry those plastic tabs apart. Not the right tool. I found that an allen wrench/hex key works well. Doesn't have to be a hex wrench, could be any rod or shaft that just barely slips between the plastic tabs above where the pull rod snaps in, then simply push laterally to either side while pulling the rod. This rod or piece is inserted in the direction parallel to the pull rod, literally lay it right on top of the diverter pull rod on the side where the plastic tabs are open/separated, and push left or right while pulling the pull rod out.
@ETPCYT
@ETPCYT 6 жыл бұрын
I had some corrosion around the part of the spout that the diverter gate blocks off. It may be you have some buildup too that does not allow it to seal fully. Thank you for your tips, they are most appreciated! Have a wonderful day!
@SimplyRedVirginia
@SimplyRedVirginia 6 жыл бұрын
So, I found out actually that the diverter gate replacement Moen told me was the correct one, was slightly off in its measurement. The easy way to explain it is, when I installed the Moen replacement part, if I looked through the spout from the wall side (removed spout to replace the part and eyeballed back through the back of it to see the replacement diverter), I could see it wasn't covering the hole completely, it was about 1/16" or so off center. I verified this by taking it back out and placing it (the plastic piece) on the edge of my workbench, any good sharp corner surface will work for this, and sighting across the two plastic pieces sitting next to each other. The distance from where the pull knob stem snaps in to the plastic to where the plastic stops inside the spout when you pull the knob-stem up, was slightly different. So I went to Lowe's and found their generic diverter replacement part, and took it out of the package right there in the store to verify it (I love when manufacturers package so you can access it without damaging the packaging, smart move) and sure enough, the generic diverter was the exact distance/size as the old one. Moen's replacement part was wrong/off. So, I installed the generic one and it lines up well, but you are right, I think 24 years of corrosion is part of the problem. I scraped off as much as I could and still the diverter leaked a little but still better than the result you had in the video. So, I made a thin plastic washer cut down in diameter from it's original size to fit in the seat where the rubber seal inserts, and put it in the seat behind the rubber seal, pushing the seal maybe a bit less than 1/16" farther out, tighter against the spigot hole. This created almost a total seal, but pulling the knob/stem is stiffer so it doesn't fall back down naturally when the valve is turned off, so you have to push it back down. Also, the new replacement plastic part, either the Moen or the generic had shorter plastic tabs where the rod snaps in, making it even harder to pry them loose. When I removed the generic one to put in that shim washer I nearly had to break it, literally sitting it on a bench and using a hammer and punch rod to force the pull rod back through in the direction its not supposed to. But it survived and snapped back together OK. But with the new ones, even the allen wrench/hex key trick I mentioned before did not work. Saved me a total spout replacement. I also replaced the o-rings on the part that slips over the 1/2" copper pipe. Down the road when it ticks me off again I will just buy and install a quality spigot. Moen's basic one is twice what the universal ones cost, but its a super simple switch out...one set screw, old one off, new one on, tighten set screw...done...maybe a little plumbers silicone grease.

Wow thank you so much for your detailed and helpful post. Most appreciated! I realize the video is not much help here as I was holding the camera and trying to do this one- handed lol.

What did you do after 11:21 where it was still leaking and then you cut at 11:27 to say "let's see how it works now" and it works? I replaced the diverter gate and it's still leaking like it does in 11:21.

Hrrmm. I think I took it out and cleaned around the area that gets sealed.. it can get some buildup that blocks the rubber part from making a good seal.. I am trying to remember since that was a while ago.. okay I watched the video.. and the diverter kit I bought was slightly off.. I wound up using the old one and just replacing the rubber seal as it fit much better..

@@ETPCYT Thank you for your reply! I'll try that. I'll also have to try the silicone plumber's grease as well. Right now it leaks worse than before! =) Thanks also for the video as that saved tons of time just getting the diverter off for replacement.

not 100% water diverted. it is 20 years old so it does have some mineral build up. I would say I am at 95% water diverted which is much better than it was.

How did that work do well for you? I did that same thing and still doesn’t work.

Hrmm.. have you checked your faucet.. if you have hard water, their could be some build up around the area where the seal is. If there is too much your washer won't make a proper seal and it will not work very well if at all.

Look folks, the tub water comes out via the SPOUT ($10 - $25 each depending on the style you choose) the spout parts wear out. Replace it by UNSCREWING it (twisting it to the Left) from the wall (with water off). Add Teflon Tape ($1.99 per small roll) to threads. Put the spout back on by twisting to the right. Hand tighten it. Test it and Jump In!

Mine leaks just a little now.. tolerable levels I guess. I think it is just an older faucet and to stop it altogether I would have to get a new faucet assembly. For the time being this is fine :)
