Jocelyn Kwan I bought a Scotch laminator. It has two settings. I set it to the highest setting (5ml) and let it heat up for ten or more minutes. I get perfect results using the thin parchment paper as a carrier. I love it and it only cost $16!

You have to use a laser printer to use the foil, thats how it transfers.
@dededexter
@dededexter 7 жыл бұрын
I've used baking paper instead of copy paper on some of my foils - especially good for ones that don't transfer easily. And you can run through more than once but it turns some area matte instead of glossy. P.S. for smaller areas some nail foil can work too :)

@lasinmt106
@lasinmt106 3 жыл бұрын
@@jennyharris782 I know you brought this up 3 years ago!!! OMGOSH but hey still interesting and relevant today. Ok printing via laser printer or copy machine that uses TONER not ink onto canvas will be difficult no doubt. Most people would cut a design out via digital cutting machines yes script and words too and transfer with iron on vinyls which do come in glitters and foil or metallics too not just matte colors. Also you can achieve great results just with a home iron as long as you follow directions to a T and do not move iron around much but press for so many seconds then move to new section with some overlap and press hard down again. They now have PENS similar to woodburning type tools that heat up and have writing nibs on their ends that you can place this type of foil in this video onto a fabric and WRITE right over it with the heat pen. Some great great results others not as good as you may like or can do with printer and digital works. You can also cut patterns and letters out via metal dies and embossing/die cut machines and again use iron on vinyl in colors and designs of your choice and usually it's best to use transfer paper a clear type of tape that allows you to pick up the design after weeding and go check out what weeding is here on youtube but once your design is the only thing left you lay the tranfer tape over it and move it to your fabric. Usually you want to place a teflon sheet over that and then start ironing or if you have a fabric press etc. follow their directions too. Different brands and styles of vinyl has temperature recommendations and now long to press. If however you are doing it with an iron always do a couple of trials to make sure you've got the right temperature. Some you remove cold some you remove while still warm again it depends on brands and their adhesives used. It usually is best not to try to lay down twice where you do your base design and then apply over it more vinyl and iron again. That can cause damage. Not in all cases but they recommend you don't if at all possible lay the entire design even mixed vinyls at one time via transfer tape and then start ironing over a teflon sheet. Teflon sheets are reused over and over and are relatively inexpensive. Transfer tape is usually clear with or without a grid. Sometimes you can find a bundle start up pack of several smaller transfer sheets with a few teflon sheets and that allows you to learn and work through a learning curve and maybe figure out what you want to do and enough feed back to send you searching for better tranfer paper that meets your sizes and needs best or it's just all you want to begin with. Watch VIDEOS here on KZbin. There are people tranferring designs via iron on vinyls to canvas and fabric. I myself am making a couple of custom made yarn totes for a friend and want her name and or initials on the pocket flaps. So on one tote it will be all canvas and expect no problems. But the main tote has vinyl pocket flaps and cording for added support to make it stand up better on it's own when empty and so some vinyl upholstery fabric will handle being ironed over if you use the teflon sheet others is too temperature sensitive and will melt. I've yet to do my trial with the one I'm using. If it doesn't work then I will run her name across the back side right onto the canvas itself which I know works. I haven't meantioned you can also purchase quilters cotton fabric that's treated on back side with adhesive you also iron on but it runs through inkjets and I believe they make it for laser printers too. In this case you could print any design you love right onto the WHITE cotton treated sheets usually 8.5x11" size but one sheet at a time hand fed to insure it doesn't jam. Some laser printers do not like any thickness at all so a copy machine with toner might be best for those. And then they actually make clear vinyls you can print on again any design and or T-shirt design decal paper that you then again print any design but it needs to be mirrored so when you flip it over to iron onto the canvas in your case or shirt etc. It transfers with the letters going in the right direction. Ok lots of possiblities here. BUT if you are after that Metalic BLING the first few methods using this foil is the way to go. I am curious myself however and will one of these days try it out but if I ran a cotton gulters fabric through a black and white laser toner printer would I be able to then with an iron or heat press apply foil to that or will the cotton soak up too much of the toner or maybe it's treated with something that won't let you. Until I try or run across someone who's tested that theory out I myself don't know the answer. I bet there are some other ways too that I haven't thought of. Again start watching some videos and search for foiling canvas and fabrics and I bet you'll narrow it down. Meantime Jenny I bet yo've already succeeded in your project years ago and hope it was amazing.

If you don’t have a piece of plastic cover to put through your laminator, use a piece of kitchen parchment paper, it works great! Also if you take a very fine paint brush and brush off your printed paper and the back of your foil before you put them together it clears off all the little specs of dust, kitty hair etc. that get caught and don’t adhere your foil.

There are two types of foils. The Deco Foil does well on toner printed up from a copier/printer. The other foil is the 'Go Press' foil and that does well in a Go Press and Foil machine. It does not transfer well onto toner. I only found this out after pulling my hair out and wondering what I was doing wrong. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this video! Question, does the foiling need to be done as soon as the paper has printed? Due to ‘warm’ toner? Or can i print at a store, take home and then foil? Thanks!

Absolutely you can print at a store and then take it home. The foil reacts with the toner whether it was printed 10 seconds or 10 years ago. Great question!!! Have fun!

I love this stuff although I've not done it for decades! We got an HP4P in the early 90's and I discovered this stuff way back then. I just printed whatever I wanted, put the foil on it - seems like it had heat-proof stickers to hold things in place and a carrier with the package I bought. I put it through a few times if necessary - using the same foil, just moving it around a bit until it was covered to my satisfaction. I only turn that printer on when I really need laser prints now. I'm sure it will eventually stop working altogether! I've been through boxes of reams of paper with it and it just kept printing. The ink-jets I've had have not been as dependable - but they are color! ;) I recently bought a couple of rolls at Tuesday Morning - usually overstock or discontinued things. I wish I had gotten more. I got home and the colors I bought, I already had!

Sadaf Azhar you can print something with black toner on a laser jet (not inkjet) printer and use that and some foils (“heat reactive”) will fuse to the toner. You can also use “reactive” sprays and pens, as well as thermo-web gel.
@PlumMashable
@PlumMashable 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering Margaret. As she said Sadaf, its the toner of the laser printer that allows the foil to react. There are lots of ways to add foil and glitter though, and glue, as you mentioned, is also a good way. Hope that helps!

The Minc machine is better than a laminator as it has different heat settings which means that you can also foil thicker materials like chipboard. Keep an eye on Spotlight, last year I bought my Mini Minc for $60 as they had a 50% off sale on Minc products! The large was only $100. You also won't get those speckles with a Minc - The laminator isn't hot enough to completely bond the foil.
@PlumMashable

I shall keep an eye out Captain Hook. I do admit that I'd like the foil to be more consistent, but the laminator works well enough for what I need for now. Thanks for the info! :)

Unlike the book pages that she showed, which are coated during the process, these are not considered to be sealed, but applied to the surface so they are subject to scratching eventually.

Foiling is just adding a metallic shine to parts, or all of, a project. You can add it to anything as long as you can print it with a toner printer.

why does it have to be a laser printer?
@rebekahhoward8827
@rebekahhoward8827 7 жыл бұрын
highonlollypops Because it heats up the toner onto the paper so when you put it through the minc or laminator it heats up the toner again and makes it sticky for the foil to stick to. Inkjet is like a pen and just ink. There is no heat that bonds the ink to the paper.

They have a pen you can use to draw on what you like. You can also trace if you’re handwriting isn’t as you would like. :) that way you don’t have to go buy a laser printer.

Tip: Even if you don't have a laser printer, and can't go anywhere to get it printed for you. You can use a standard printer that uses TONER INK when it prints, and that will work just as well if not better! You can get these printers for cheap online at places like Amazon, and eBay!
@PlumMashable
@PlumMashable 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Isabel. Toner is what the foil reacts with to make sure it sticks. As far as I am aware, Toner ink only comes from a Laser printer? A laser printer is still reasonably affordable if you only get black and white, which is all you need for foiling anyway. Thanks for the tip though :D
@isabellarge7306

@@PlumMashable You can get printers that use toner ink, we have one here at home, and I think they are quite affordable as well if you get a small one.

This might be an odd question, but I'm currently looking into doing a bunch of foil prints in the future for conventions and such, all the prints have a black background and from what I see its the black that picks up the foil. Can you set the laser printer too a setting where its not the black that gets foiled? I don't exactly know how to word it I'm sorry. I have little gold stars and such drawn into the image and I would prefer those to be foiled, how would I go about that?
@PlumMashable
@PlumMashable 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Turrkoise. It's not the black that it sticks to, its the toner. So if you printed on a black piece of paper and then foiled it, it would only stick to where the printing is. Does that help? Happy to answer more questions if thats not what you meant!

(7-1-23) I bought a smart lami intelligent auto a few days ago. I hope today is getting much better than 5 years ago you posted on video. I tested and they are still the same result that you showed about black matte and smooth paper is not real good. White matte smooth and glossy paper are doing really well. I guess maybe 'Therm-O-Type FT-10 Foil Fuser' will work much better. I dunno.
