Thank you for showing how to fold the top of the collar! I own a lot of old vintage kimono that are damaged (moth holes, staining, dye transfer, sun bleaching). While many are eventually going to be disassembled and their fabric reused I want to store them nicely until that time comes. Plus I DO have four in very good condition (one is like new!) and those must be stored correctly. A tip for long storage (say about a year, I try to air them out at least once) to prevent dye transfer: place folded sheets of acid free tissue paper where highly contrasting colors of fabric meet when folded.

This tutorial is extremely helpful. I own a vintage silk weave kimono, and a factory-made yukata, and when folding I noticed so many uneven seams in the yukata. The kimono is handmade and is perfectly symmetrical.

Thank you so much for this video. I just got 2 new kimono and needed to remember how to fold them. One of the kimono turned out exactly as yours did but the other one did not. I am pretty sure that it is because the seams did not appear to have been used to fold the kimono previously and now it is crease in an unusual way. I am thinking I will definitely have to take some lessons with you to get my kimono folding and wearing down pat.

How do you “hang” or carry amulets on the kimono? I’ve seen in movies or pictures that some geishas carry amulets or pin small handkerchiefs on the waist of their kimonos.

I just found your video, that is very clear and intimate. thank you so much! おつかれさまでした! How should I store my kimono? The flat way as you show it (I know there are kimono "bags" but I don't have any of those...) or can I fold the kimono one more time to put it in a regular bag?

When you want to, you can fold it another time. I don't do it, but there are a lot of ppl who do that to store their kimono. :)

Hello and thank you for the video. But how do you fold a child's kimono? I just got my daughter one. Should I told it or hang it?
@BillyMatsunaga5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! I planned a few videos about kid's kimono in autumn, because my niece will have a little thing then. Btw, I always recommend hanging kimono, if you are not sure how to fold it, don't want to be bothered with folding it and have space in your closet. ;) But I will definitely make a video about how to fold children's kimono!!

Paula Kirsch Hi! You fold them like in this video. Just be careful that when you fold the length in half (last step) that the sleeve inside is folded nicely and doesn’t wrinkle up.

I made a Kimono but I have no idea how to care for it and theJapanese cotton on the collar is turning yellow! what have I done wrong? The Kimono is a formal priests robe Kimono that is blue satin and purple silk inner lining but, I'm giving it to a freind for Christmas. What can I tell them to help them take care of it?
@BillyMatsunaga4 жыл бұрын
hi! sorry for the late response (youtube is not notifying of all incoming comments). Anyway, you're mentioning 3 different fabrics in your comment. Cotton: can and should be washed at least once or twice a year. Silk Satin (?) and silk: dry clean only. But I'm not sure what kind of kimono it is, so I can't give you further recommendations without seeing a picture. Feel free to send me some on Instagram (if you still have the kimono available).

Is this acceptable folding for every type of kimono? I recently read about よぎだたみ while trying to find out how to protect my 振袖 from color bleeding or sticking to each other. Is there any reason to use よぎだたみ rather than the method you have demonstrated? Also, can you tell me what the name of the paper they use between folds to keep designs from transferring to other silk panels when folding?
@BillyMatsunaga5 жыл бұрын
This is the most common way to fold kimono for storage. Of course you could also store your kimono with 夜着畳み when you have enough space to store it that way. I only use it for children's kimono and my 大振袖. I don't think that the paper as any special name. In books it is always referred as "paper". I btw have usual thin paper (close to a tissue) between every layer of my furisode that I folded like in this video. ;)
