Great video. My project is nearly identical, minus the duct. Glad to finally find a video to explain how to frame the door at the end of the wall with the sandwiched end stud and jack stud. I also really appreciate the detail on each fastener used and where.

You can also put a screw or nail at 1.5" for the first stud and hook your tape measure to that screw/nail and measure to 16", 32" etc for the remaining studs (must place the "x" mark behind rather than ahead).

@Ellie Hk m8 get few quotes and you will be pleasantly surprised the difference in prices.. don't go to a big firm they will charge a frigging fortune 💯. its not cheap but try get an electrician that will do the job on the side if u know what I mean...
@christopherpaulo6818 Жыл бұрын
@@elliehk1832 Fuz is right, it really depends, the margins differ greatly and I’m not sure where you are from. I’m from Toronto / Canada, and everything here is $$$. But make sure who you do get is properly licensed. You can find good guys who will do it for a reasonable price. More expensive isn’t always better but it is safer. Less expensive might be as good but it comes with its own risks as well. You get what you pay for.

Great video. Well presented. One question, At 14:32 in the video, to what do you nail the top plate around the iron I-beam?
@DoingWhatever2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good question! In my case this isn't an iron I-beam, it's a laminated wood beam so I was able to attach the top plate to it using a screw. If it's a steel beam, I've seen some people use the Ramset gun to attach it to the steel beam. I've also seen others drill a hole in the steel beam and use a screw to attach it that way. hope that helps!

I noticed that you left the piece of wood you used to secure the two pieces that made up your top plate in place. I don't have the clearance like you do. I have the same situation though where I have 10ft plates and am short just over a foot. Any suggestions on how to secure the two pieces to make up my top plate, but I can't leave it like you did. Thanks
@DoingWhatever2 жыл бұрын
You could cut the two pieces to length so that the joint between them lands right on a vertical stud. then just nail both plates to the vertical stud. If you don't have room for that, then I would toenail them together by driving some screws in at an angle. Make sense? Thanks for the question and for watching 😃

Just a little confused did you say the door was 32” and you were going to give 2” more so a total of 34”, but then you made the space 38”. Are you using a bigger door? Thanks just want to understand
@DoingWhatever Жыл бұрын
sorry for the confusion - yes the door at the beginning that I showed for an example was a 32" door. the door that I framed out for in the video was a 36" door. The basic rule of thumb is add about 2" to the size of your door and that's how big the rough opening should be. this allows for the door frame and some shims to get it nice and plumb.
@davidrussell8795Ай бұрын
If u set the door,leaning towards the striker plate,it will close itself! Whereas a squared off door will stay where you left it!

what software are you showing at the start of the video? would this give you ideas of rough material needed? I see you have a bunch of 2x4s next to your miter saw
@DoingWhatever2 жыл бұрын
The software is called Sketchup. I believe there is a free version you can use. If you want you could model every stud and basically build it first virtually before building it in real life! I modeled almost all the studs for my basement first and had a pretty good estimate on the quantity I needed.
