Im convinced its a rigged system. Ive been told twice by mining HR Reps (not on the record) that i need to be a woman or Aboriginal. Ive been trying for 12 years since and have more tickets than a roll of toilet paper. Ill keep trying but i still think the recruitment process is unfair to all that apply.

G’day Blake, shotfiring is a very important role, you are the first to ask me about it in all the years! To get in you will go through security checks, so whoever employs you will be looking very vigorously through your criminal history, any police records and they may even go as far as medical history for certain aspects. As far as tickets and courses, that’s a question I can’t answer, but no doubt there is an RTO available course for shotfirers, it may include the security ticket. I hope that’s of some help mate. Hey mate, I drove rigid/semi tippers in Melbourne for 5 years and want to go to the mines now. I can go and get R11 tickets etc, but they all want years of experience for tipper/haul truck jobs. Do you think there's a way around that? Think i can't use my references because it wasn't on mine sites and the trucks were a lot smaller!
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 3 жыл бұрын
G’day mate 👍 I think you’d still be in with a shot if you apply for the jobs that are suggesting ‘experience’ and if you get to interview stage you can chat with them about your past experience. They will potentially train you up on the big dumpy’s. Your references will still be good. They’d be more interested in what kind of worker you were than your tipper skills.

Thanks mate, much appreciated 👍🏻 I’m finding it hard to understand exactly what information you’re looking for - I assume you’re looking for contact details for mining companies (given your experience on haul trucks)? If that’s correct, I can’t offer personal details for any mining companies, given the size of Australia, there are so many different locations and companies operating in this industry. That’s up to you to research, once you decide where in Australia you want to work. Note: you’ll need to sort VISA stuff yourself, and I’m not sure of the industry opinion on guest jobs.

G’day mate, that sounds great! I hope all the best on your trip to WA 😀 Pending the type of trucks driven on certain mine sites, employers can ask for MR or HR type truck licences. Please guide me i want to become Haul dump truck driver, what are the qualifications,requirements and procedure of getting a licence to drive?
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 2 жыл бұрын
G’day mate. There are plenty of things needed in order to get a job driving a haul truck in Australia. Coming from overseas you’re going to need to be living in Australia, that is the first hurdle. I can’t advise what to do or how to do it, in order to get the sponsorship to move here for work. From there you’d need a current drivers licence and the ability to pass a drug and alcohol test. There will also be a series of question regarding your current skills and machinery tickets. International machinery experience will be an advantage, although the requirements between different countries to operate machines is different, so that will be tested. You’ll need to find an agency over here who will put you through training and help you to have your international experience recognised. From there, you need to find and apply for jobs!

G’day mate, good to hear from you! First, I must say thank you for not asking me about VISA information as I don’t know anything on how or what to do there! Getting skills is the first way you can make yourself appeal to the mining companies. It’s up to you to decide what field in the mining industry that you target, but I must say that you don’t need to go to university to become a driller. Perhaps a mining engineer or something similar would require it. Once you are established in Australia you can search for what jobs are available and what suits you. If you can’t find a job that you like, you could look for mining contractor work which will expose you to many different jobs and areas of the mine, which can help you make your long term decision.

As for courses, generic mining inductions and safety courses (S11 helps if you’re looking into coal - you can Google the generic mining inductions too) will put you up the list when it comes to applying for jobs. I’m a maintenance engineer in uk atm and that’s the kinda stuff I work on so looking to see if there’s any jobs that I could fit into with an nvq 3 in mechanical engineering maintenance. G’day mate, there are positions perfectly aligned with what you’d like to do, funny enough! Maintenance crews and technicians spend a lot of time around conveyor systems, and the like. My pleasure mate. The usual fitter role is a lot more involved than that, which is where getting on as a contractor will probably help you get the other experiences that’ll get you a qualification. That’ll allow you to advance and climb the ladder, rather than sitting on an “entry level” role.

Hey bro always been a dream to be a diesel fitter i live in Qld right now im 20 years old. What are some things i must have? Like cert wise? Licenses? How many hrs a day? Do you get to pick 1week off 1 week on? Do they offer apprenticeships to learn?
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 2 жыл бұрын
G’day mate, cheers for the question! Your skills are a good start. Have you had any experience on the tools, or in a workshop environment? If not, that’s ok, but it would definitely help if we can play your advantage card 😄 A generic mine induction and advanced first aid are a good start as far as pre-training. If you’re looking for a trade, you can get into apprenticeships with the right attitude and showing initiative. As a diesel fitter it’d help to have a truck licence that suits the state you’re going to work in. The more experience the better. Mining fitters usually operate 12hr shifts. Each mine has a different roster though. You could get a week on/week off roster, you could get two week on/week off. There are tonnes of different rosters, it all depends on the mine you are at.

Hi There, Great segment. However, how realistic is ones "focus" on what they want to do if they have no experience and no knowledge of tasks behind each title? I am also informed that one should present a "mining" resume in order to be hired and no cover-letter. Is this true? Thanks.
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, appreciate it 👍 If a person has no experience or knowledge, the best thing they can do is research the jobs. Trade jobs are a no brainer - they require experience, but an apprenticeship in a trade certainly doesn’t. Most people could make basic assumptions on those roles (I.E. a fitter will have a title in front such as diesel, mechanical, etc, you can surmise that it’s a role in a plant, on heavy or light machinery, or even underground). Research is key. It’s one thing to say “I want that money”, but it’s another thing to know why and have a genuine interest in it yourself. Mining resumes come into play when applying for a role that says “experience required”, unless it’s a junior or green role. Having a mate recommend would be something to hold close, but also show full respect and not tarnish that persons name if you land a job off the back of a mate. Cover letters are still very important - the companies like to know what you’re about even if you come recommended. I hope I’ve answered your questions mate 👍

What's the male to female ratio of where you currently work? I have watched a lot of KZbin Clips so far, and it appears mining companies are still failing on male to females ratio (given it is the 21st century). This could be addressed by having more entry level roles advertised!
@Keithy_W

It’s pretty good here, there are quite a few women on site. The admin roles are definitely female dominant, and the hard-yakka roles are mostly male dominant, but there’s still a lot of women doing these roles. In the last 15 years there’s definitely been a noticeable shift in the ratio.

G’day mate 👍🏻 It’s a tough situation to guests coming over to Australia. Getting in is hard enough, then there are hurdles here and there too. As far as the 2 year wait with an Auzzie car license, there may be other mines with different rules, but it does sound about right. It’s to ensure others driving the trucks are suitably experienced enough behind the wheel of a vehicle. It’s hard to say what job other than truck driving might suit you, but I’m sure if you put your strengths in an online search, you should come close to finding the perfect job!

G’day Nathan, I sure can mate. The offsite type mining with those really awkward rosters are oil and gas type jobs. Firstly you will need to be a resident of Australia. The industry do not allow workers to fly in and out from overseas due to the risk of the worker not returning, flight issues, etc, preventing the worker from arriving to work. To apply you can find an agency in the city/town where you reside, or you can search online job adverts and apply through there. You will probably have the best chance through an agency if you have minimal experience. That’s your job to find the agency!! I can only advise, you need to do the heavy lifting 😉 I can’t tell how much crane operators earn, but it’d be 80k +. Generally crane operators have a multi role in the mines. Mobile cranes are more a contractor job.

G’day mate, thanks for singing out 👍🏻 The best advice I can offer is to sell yourself - in an interview, make sure you put your strengths forward. You will also need to be a resident of Australia - the mines do not hire international workers who fly overseas each break.

is there many women who work in the mines im really keen on getting into the industry but no sure if they take us chicks seriously
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 3 жыл бұрын
G’day Emma, there are heaps of women working in the mines! That’s not to say they’re doing secretary roles, no no. We have women at the front line underground, operating machinery, electricians, etc. On the surface they’re in all roles from fitters, plant operators, electrical to mechanical. They take the ladies just as serious as the fellas 👍

Hello, brother. I hope you're all doing well. I'm recently graduated from Federation University with a Master's degree in *Mining Engineering,* and I'm actively looking for opportunities in the *mining industry* . If any of you have any leads or advice, I'd greatly appreciate your insights and support. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 11 ай бұрын
G’day mate, apologies for taking a long time to reply to you. Once you have the working visa (which I don’t know much about), your experience on the excavator will definitely aid your job hunt! If you know roughly where you are going to live, it will help you decide where you want to work (Australia is a very big place).

G’day mate, it’s quite likely you would be able to use your mining engineer qualifications over here. There may be some aspects that need checking by industry experts, that you may have to investigate with whichever company you contact.

@@lorrellmcguinness2119 first you’ll have to get your HC license (Heavy combination) and get a couple of years of experience to put down on your C.V. Once you’ve had your HC license and a couple of years experience under your belt, you can start looking at applying for FiFo work where you can get your plant operators license to drive the dump trucks. Just research as much as you can on Google, then look for some fifo work, where you can get out on the mines, start earning some proper money. But i warn you, fifo work is not for everyone, especially if you have kids. Your away from family weeks at a time, out in the middle of no where. However I enjoy it, it’s good money and wouldn’t change it for the world.
