Great video. I manage an Instructional Design Master's degree. We don't have tests, but use projects that instructional designers use in the "Real World". Greetings Dr. Greg, I'm a 21 year-old from Egypt and I'm a senior in the University of Tanta specially in Business Information Systems Sector with +4 years of volunteering experiences in conducting training sessions in business and entrepreneurship essentials for my university colleagues and younger students. Recently I've discovered the world of Instructional Design and how L&D as a field is extremely important and an uprising field in the near future from a friend that works in that field. I'm writing this as a reply on your comment that got me very intrigued about this type of Master's degree because I haven't seen it in Egypt before and specially with the deliverables you're providing there, and would love to contact with you even further to know more about this program, surely if you're willing to do so, this could help me in a huge way since I'm trying to find a solid place to learn and have real world trials over. Sorry for the long reply but I tried to be informative yet to the point and thank you so much for your precious time, if you are willing to maybe e-mail more about it I would love to know that and start e-mailing or texting for more details if possible 🙏🙏 All love from Egypt❤

Hi Ashley, thanks for the positive feedback! Creating a strong portfolio is a great way to differentiate yourself from the competition (especially on freelance websites). Social proof (like reviews and testimonials) will also really help you seem more trustworthy to potential clients. Finally, you can specialize in a specific area (such as storyboarding, visual design, complex development, etc.). Highlighting really good, specific deliverables on a portfolio will help you stand out for those types of opportunities.

Hi Cynthia! I would definitely recommend learning Articulate Storyline (that seems to be one of the most important tools for landing a corporate opportunity right now), and getting familiar with some tools in the Adobe Creative Cloud is a good idea. I have a video about Adobe Illustrator for eLearning and how to use Adobe XD to mock up eLearning screens. I'd suggest watching both of those and getting comfortable doing what I do there. And I'd also suggest getting as good with Storyline as you are able to. Dive in and start building out some interactions. II have a KZbin video about which order to learn SL functionality in, and I also have a series of live workshops that get quite complex, so maybe jump into those once you feel comfortable.

Hi Devlin. I'm new to your channel and have a question. I wanted to get storyline 360 to try out before my final interview this Thursday just so I can say that I am familiar with it. I've only used my previous companies own built LMS system. That was a 3 month temp job. I have recently gotten myself familiar with Rise 360 briefly and recently. I found it quite easy to use. Currently building something on that to show from Rise 360. I've watched videos on youtube about storyline 360 and it seems to have a similar feel to PPT which I know how to use quite well. I know they want me to use a system without templates/from scratch and storyline does this. However because I am on a mac I cannot afford parallels to get storyline so I can only educate myself on that vie online and youtube videos. I just hope it's not going to be too much of an issue when and if they consider me. Have people got a job where they haven't used storyline but have used other LMS and Rise? I have passed the first and second stage of the interview and have a 3rd and last stage for the ID job this Thursday. They will ask me more about my portfolio and tools.

Hi! Can you get a Parallels trial? I think you will def want to practice with the tool and maybe build a small project with it. And most corporate jobs do want you to know Storyline

@@DevlinPeckYT The problem is that I may not have time to do that as I am finishing one on rise to show them. This company are hiring 2 instructional designers for the first time. Its a new role to them. They are hiring for after the new year so I could practice with a trial version of parallels till then but I worry its still not enough even if its a new role. Do you think it is a complete loss in my circumstance?

@@peachysnapple Awh, sorry to hear that you aren’t having much luck. Can you share more about what you’ve tried and why you feel like you aren’t having much luck? And I have seen a couple of negative posts on the subreddit lately. Honestly, it goes in cycles. After several positive posts, some people feel like it doesn’t reflect their experience and they want to be heard. I really wouldn’t let the individual stories get you down too much. Overall there is a lot of opportunity in this field and it only seems to be growing. Breaking in can feel really daunting with no experience, but if you optimize your application materials, I am sure that you will be eligible for the right opportunities.

So I’ve been applying to ID, and learning and development internships. I’ve gotten one rejection and the rest I haven’t heard anything from. I also had a friend refer me to an ID position but they wanted 3 years + experience and I don’t think it made it past scanners. I work in education but I’m not a teacher. I’m finishing my masters this year and I’d really like a summer internship so I can get some experience.
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 3 жыл бұрын
@@peachysnapple I see! I wouldn’t feel too discouraged. I think that most internships come via word of mouth or connections within a university (at least, that’s what I’ve seen in the past). What about spending the summer to work on your skill set / build a portfolio? That will give you much more credibility for internships and FT jobs alike.

That’s definitely my goal! I’m taking three classes this summer and going to redo my portfolio. I mostly just have infographics, interactive images and a training video up. Is there anything else you recommend? I’m using a Mac but I’m going to get windows installed so I can play with articulate.

Hi there , I'm from Technical background. If I'm planning to switch to ID how long it might take to prepare and be ready for interview? I just have 3 months with me. Is this sufficient?

Thanks Devlin, for your time. So just 1 last thing I've to ask. So to start off with is it better to be a freelancer for atleast 6 months and then try a full time job? Or directly going through some course and trying for jobs is better?

Hi Devlin, I've worked as a content writer for 4 years in Ed tech in India. I've had an opportunity to brainstorm the ideas for instructional design for 1+ year bereft using any software/tool. It feels scary to explore the unknown with my circumstances, but I will implement what you spoke about. I will update you when I complete my career transition. Thanks!

There are definitely IDs in this field who do not have any college degrees! A bachelor's will help (and it may be more difficult to land roles without a bachelor's degree), but it is not required for some roles. Showing off your skillset will take you a long way!

It's definitely possible! We've worked with IDs who are transitioning into the field post-retirement or are on their 3rd or 4th careers. If it's a good fit for you, it's never too late to start.
