Not always. They may do it with service grade and better but the rack grade I bought wasn't gauged; or at the very least they didn't put the readings on the tag. Everything is still functional- the safety moves as it should that locks in position, the op-rod isn't damaged, spring looks good, it fires/cycles properly and is still acceptably accurate.

The purpose of the DCM and then the CMP was for every American to become proficient and you are keeping in that spirit. Got mine in 2021. Took a while but was totally worth it, a beautiful and accurate Service Grade SA from the Korean War era. The club I used was the RWVA, having attended an Appleseed shoot (Highly recommended due to the skills it will impart to a beginner, and it qualifies as proof of marksmanship to boot). Don't know how it is now, but you used to be able to put a post-it with your rifle preference (Springfield, H&R, Winchester, etc., WWII era, Korean War era, etc.) on top of your application, and they would try to fill your request (no guarantees, of course - Winchesters are rare). Good luck everyone and hope to see you on the range!

Can confirm, CAC is the best. We were TDY at Maxwell this July, they let us use our 2-hour pass, then cleaned and shipped the rifles home for us. On the range, a 90-year-old Korean war vet helped us zero the rifle. To say they were enthusiastic to have younger military guys there would be an understatement and let us stay way longer than 2 hours. I'm pretty sure every old guy working the range was a vet. Also, the 600 yard range is 10/10. Watching this video to order another from home ;)

I did this over 30 years ago. At the time it was described as "$185.00 and a long wait." It was a long wait, but at this point I really don't remember how long it took. At the time, you needed to participate in 2 sanctioned high power rifle matches, and be a member of a CMP affiliated club. The minimum score was 0 because if you scored less than that, and this would tend to put a stop to the process. There was no "choose your grade" you got what you got.
@michaelpalermo13226 ай бұрын
Another Bonus is the CMP is willing to work with you if there are issues with your rifle depending on the grade. After replacing some normal things like springs and the bullet stop on my CMP rifle it turned out the Op-rod tab was worn down and was causing my op rod to become detached from the track when firing. I sent some pictures over to the CMP and they sent me a shipping label and had the Op-rod replaced and test fired free of charge.

A am fortunate that I live an hour and 45 minutes from the Camp Perry "North" store location. It was wonderful to walk in and SEE what they have on hand. I went in looking for a Service Grade rifle that had a WWII active manufacturing date, but they had NONE in Service Grade. So I went to Field Grade and found 2. I picked the slightly older of the 2, February of 1945, made still during the war and likely saw some, but limited, action. It had the patina I was looking for without being terrible as it had its original stock. The barrel was also in good shape (It is more accurate than I am and I was surprised at the grouping I could get out of it). I would have liked to have got one older, but as you can imagine, WWII era rifles are few and far between now. I cleaned the stock, not impacting the finish at all, and it is now no longer course to the touch from the grime that had become imbedded in it, has a very dark finish as when I bought it, and looks absolutely beautiful. I was so happy I could go there and pick out myself exactly what I was looking for.

A couple months late to the game, but I just wanted to add my experience with this about 6-7 years ago: I got a Mid 1950's south korean vintage mismatched with some WW2 parts, and a strikingly contrasted forend and stock. I absolutely love the thing. It was a "tack driver" right out of the crate, and even though it's got something of a bastard history, I feel the connection with my grandfather who was at Inchon, and my great uncle who was in Normandy, every time I hear the "ping" of an ejected clip. My OCD tendencies subsequently led me to "collect" an M1a as well as the "scout" and "socom" variants...but I've sold everything except for my "as close as possible to an M14,"...and my CMP M1. You're not going to get perfect if you get one of these...you're going to get amazing, and the two of you are going to grow together.

My friend sent me this a while back and I'm going to get one, I've just been putting it off because of the paperwork haha. Only thing I really need to get done other than a club membership is the marksmanship certification thing. My only experience with shooting g is going out into the woods eith my buddy and his retired and active duty military family members and my mother drilling me on firearms safety she learned from her father as a child. Can't really use those as proof for the form lol.

Well done sir! I've been wanting an M1 for quite some time. The perceived obstacles aren't nearly as bad as I thought. Thanks!

I guess my request for my local club to become cmp affiliated didn't fall on deaf ears. They come up in the club search now, kind of suprised as they didn't seem too interested at the time but it's been about 5 years since I asked. Probably others expressed interest in that as well. You covered the part that always discouraged me very well. Did not know being member of the American Legion counted or being 60+. Great video, been wanting a nice Garand for a long time. Now it's time to go after one lol

Neat, didn't know this was a thing. As soon as I live somewhere where I can have proper storage I think I'll have to revisit this

heard about this almost 20 years ago. I had thought they had run out of M1's to give.

that's what I assumed in 2006 when I got one, but I guess more keep trickling in.

i had no idea the CMP still did anything at all! pretty interesting. i long for the good ol days when you bought firearms through mail order catalog. maybe in the very distant future, but probably never going to happen again

Thanks man. I will do this; I would love to own a M1 Garand. I have to check and make sure I did the correct training, I-1623, I have done a few different classes, should be fine.

I won an M1 garand back in like 2018 from the BRC barbecue thing. Got it shipped straight to my house.

Got me a New CMP rebuild in .308 almost a decade ago. Tax return money well spent. Spent I think $1103.02

One thing to be aware of. You NEED to keep an eye out for the shipping notification email. The last time i bought a Garand they input the shipping address incorrectly. I got the email at like 6pm so i immediately emailed them back and called them the next morning. They had to have the rifle returned to them so they could fix it and send it back out. Not a huge inconvenience but something to be aware of.

they still have several choices (grade wise), which are still available. the lowest grade is the $700 dollar one which oddly enough is twice what i paid for mine 30 odd years ago from a gun store and mine is "correct grade" per their grading system for which they don't have any for sale.

Last year my buddy and I drove up to Anniston Alabama and I hand picked mine. Got a service grade for $900, but the gun is spotless. Beats paying $1500 on gunjoker
