I bought a G17 in 1987 and recall having a few initial failures to feed or extract likely due to limp wristing. Read a pretty comprehensive article in a magazine that mentioned the condition, applied the instructions to my shooting, and had no further problems. I’ve been helping with citizen concealed carry permit classes for the past year. We usually have no more than 20 minutes to cover the fundamentals of marksmanship and gun handling in class before going to the range. Limp wristing is one shooter induced problem that surprisingly I don’t see despite the shooter forgetting everything covered in class. Doesn’t matter what gun is in hand. Most of the shooter induced stoppages are from the shooter gently riding the slide forward when chambering a round rather than pulling it back and letting it go. Some apparently don’t want to damage the gun or something, not realizing that the ignition of the cartridge causes more heat and impact than what the shooter can induce.

I have carried Glocks as a LEO for 29 years and put thousands of rounds through them. I find them to be highly functional and reliable pistols. Much like a Toyota Corolla or Honda Accord, they do not look like much but they work and require little maintenance. However, like any mechanical device, they can periodically break or have issues due to operator error. Over the 29 years I have shot Glock 22s, 23s, 17s, 19s, and now the 47, with variations from Gen 2 through 5. All were reliable and never consistently or frequently malfunctioned with 1 exception. The Gen 3 Glock 22 frequently failed to feed when there was a light attached to the rails. I would say about once every two magazines through. A simple tap / rack cleared it, but not acceptable in a duty pistol. As I recall it had something to do with how the mounted light affected the flex of the polymer frame, which caused the feeding problem. Glock's fix was stronger magazine springs, and that did solve the problem. Other than that one hiccup in design, I think Glocks are as good as any gun and better than most when it comes to reliably serving the intended purpose. If I had to pick one sidearm for all purposes for the rest of my life it would be the Glock 19. Appreciate your videos.

I am not saying they are maintenance-free, but they run pretty well with very simple and basic upkeep. My experience, yours may differ.

Note that a stronger magazine spring makes it MORE difficult for the slide to retract because it increase the friction between the cartridge and the stripper rail. Also note that if the stripper rail on the slide is rough, that causes extra friction and also makes it more difficult for the slide to retract. I have confirmed this with actual measurements using a calibrated force gauge. My Sig P365 had an extremely rough stripper rail. Polishing the stripper rail made it much easier to retract the slide.

It doesn't help any when the Glock also isn't maintained properly to begin with. Especially, the Gen 5 Glocks! My advice, put a few more drops of lube than usual. Also, when assembling the weapon's frame and slide back together, point the Glock frame up to the sky. While holding the frame like this, you slide the Glock slide on to the frame. This is to prevent the firing pin from popping out when the weapon is being put back together. These two things mentioned has helped alot from what I have seen.

An excellent demonstration and explanation of the phenomenon. To pick a terminology nit, though, the traditional term for a failure for the cartridge to be pushed into the chamber was … well, a “failure to chamber,” not a failure to feed. The autoloading cycle that is described in older Army field manuals and in the first SIG Sauer armorer manuals I have says that “feeding” is what the magazine does. By that definition, none of the failures you describe were due to a magazine malfunction. None of that is going to change how people use the term today, but it is something that some of us oldsters might notice. Thanks again.

It may be internet lore/myth - but if inertial shotguns are not allowed to move backwards, potentially they might not cycle the action. That said, I doubt most people could reasonably recreate that while holding a shotgun. I had seen a video years back with someone using a fence post as a brace that could induce the issue. Haven't been able to find the video since. But as an edge case scenario, mayhaps? That said, there have been tons of firearm malfs that never were discovered in standard testing scenarios. Like, specific drop angles causing a sear to drop. Or holding the gun at exceedingly different angles during firing. I know in the reloading community, some powders are positionally sensitive, and that's a whole aspect that can impact any number of firearms.

The remainder - struggle to qualify, aren’t confident in handling the firearm and are always in danger of getting pulled from the street if they can’t get up to speed for quals or safely handle the firearm. When you break down and analyze “police work” there is no way around it. They are more than kinda revenue collectors; which I have zero respect for and quite frankly find despicable. No. But they all at some point and in many cases are in direct and or at best indirect violation of the constitution. Both US Constitution and state constitutions. That said. I do not and never will support the police. In theory Sheriffs - being that they are voted in are beholden to the people. Police are beholden to the union. There is more. Kind of insult to injury - high school diploma to in some cases a bachelor degree to inforce the law. 7 years college to defend it. Needless to say. I got no place or respect for em. Do I hate them? Yes. Yes I do. Do I appreciate them? Ehh they have their place. But in my opinion that “place” is at the station. If we need you- we will call you. Just think about this- you are speeding doing 8 - to 10 over the speed limit. A cop radars you- darts out into traffic, then does minimum 15 to 20 or maybe 30mph over the speed limit to pull you over, endangering his life, your life and theoretically every life of the drivers around so they can ticket you and hopefully find some proboble cause. Interestingly, my duty sidearm for about 15 years in the Marshals Service was the Glock 22. I wouldn't say I like it because of its size. So I bought a 23, which I wouldn't know I wanted less to become my USMS-authorized sidearm. I also purchased the 43 and the 43x for my backups. Bear in mind I do not like plastic guns. I put in thousands of rounds (thanks to the USMS) for the rest of my career. There is not even one issue between those four Glocks, not even one. Since my retirement in late December 2017, my Glocks43 and 43x have been in my concealed carry rotations. Once again, Glocks are not my kind of weapon, but I still carry them. My 23 is in my hideout and ready to go at a moment's notice.

The biggest problem with discussing limp wrist failures on glocks, is the sheer amount of people insisting glocks can never fail. I've seen multiple glocks choke over the years. I've also heard dozens of excuses, behind why the pistol and the user are never to blame. Are they great, reliable firearms? Yeah. Are the perfection? No. They got their own idiosyncrasies, and ergo issues.
@DaveJackalopeАй бұрын
The ergos were designed that way on purpose. Limp wristing is not a failure of the firearm but instead the user. Do your research, Glock doesn’t care that you don’t like their design. It’s a tool that puts holes in things and does it well if you hold up your end of the deal.

@@DaveJackalope A poly-framed pistol does not have to be shaped like a block. I know Glock doesn't care if I like their designs one way or another. The fact still remains, the ergos on Glock are simply not as good as the competition at this point in time. Can people train around it? Yeah. Does it make the gun terrible? No. But call a spade a spade. Glock ergos have always sucked. They're fine firearms, with objectively not great ergonomics. And glock has been slapping lipstick on a pig for decades trying to fix them. Personally, I can't wait for the next gen to bring back some finger grooves. Because we're due for that change again.

If it's probable to happen when you're in a car, for example you drive car a lot and your area is known for carjackings or road-rage incidents, then absolutely that might be a reason to ditch Glock from your carry choices. And with how much defense scenarios in car happen for policemen in US, that should also be a reason to make a large re-evaluation whether Glock is really the best choice for police officer. Nice analysis but... Evrything in engineering is some kind of compromise. 1. Increase mass of the frame increases mass of the pistol it is just opposite of that what glock and any other polimer frame pistol makers wanted to achieve light weight gun easy to carry 2. Increase power of round or reducing spring pressure both results in higher energy of slide during propper cycling process and increase felt recoil which leads to less accuracy and flinching also it increases wear of the gun thats why glocks and many other guns have so long service life. 3. Reducing slide mass and reducing spring stiffness less mass and less spring tension means helps in backward operation of the slide but reduces its momentum and energy in forward operation and may cause other malfunctions during chambering process due to friction. If there is any obstruction or filth the heavier slide or stiffer spring will provide more energy to overcome friction thats why mass of a slide and spring tension are calculated so they can operate even in dirt condition and they are praised upon for this reliability. Thats why nobody is carring race guns that are very unrieliable in such dirt conditions but extremly efficient in perfect conditions of the match. So in conlusion making any changes to your spring and slide may cause less reliability in guntlet tests ;) and reduce service life of pistol. More massive frame will reduce apeal to concelment market. You can overcome limpristing very easy due to training and that is what people do. If you have problems with lipristing and you are unable to fix it by trining you can and propably should modify your gun to siute you more but those guns are designet to fit most of customers and they do. Years of service has proven that. So remeber any modification will have some costs and consequences. The "glock" formula is so great because it balances all those aspects well for most people because most of us are able to grip it propperly and we want long service life, high reliability in dirt conditions and less felt recoil with lightweight gun :) So please before you modify your gun in panic check if you have any limpristing issues if not maybe it is better not to modify and create more potential issues fighting non existing issue for you.

I’d be curious to see this done with some micro compacts. I’ve found in my experience they tend to be for me extremely reliable and practically immune to limp wristing. I used to work at a gun shop thst mainly sold used guns. I could sign them out for an employee test fire without having to pay for anf go through the whole NICS check. Closed on Sundays and we got a lot of police trade in on top of what customers brought in for trade and sale. This was about the time Glock was cemented as the defacto combat handgun LE. Two handguns we would order from a distributor in multiples. One in the case and a stash of them in the back of the store. The Glock 19 and the Beretta 92FS. This was a was around 2004-07. I had a customer who was really sold on the S&W 5906. His big reason was that it was limp wrist/bad grip resistant. Those came in frequently and we sold the best condition ones, basically NIB, for $400. That was a $800 gun new. So I signed one out to test that and sure enough it cycled every time with a insecure grip. I tried all kinds of methods including the one you use in this video. So that only made me more curious. I decided to test any other quality and popular semi auto for that . Beretta 92FS. 100% function. Sig P226, lighter weight West German model. It had issues. HK USP. 100% function. Glock 19 major issues. This was all with 115 Target ammo. But I could get Federal 9BPLE. 115gr +p+ in 50rd boxes for only a few dollars more a box. So I tried that. That stuff cycled every single 9mm pistol I tested with a incomplete grip. One thing I noticed is striker poly pistols have really heavy recoil springs. One striker poly pistol that I recently got and tested for this is the Walther P99AS. That thing has proven more reliable than any Glock I've ever owned. The only Glock I've had that never failed me in any way wad a 20 10mm. Which is odd because the ammo I shot through that varied by a lot. 10mm Bitch, the .40S&W power stuff as well as the real 10mm. It also fed .40S&W. Ive had a Glock 19, Gen 3, 23 Gen 2, and I was issued a 22 Gen 3. I also have a 48 MOS currently and all of those have given me issues. Nothing major but I have not experienced the Glock will function no matter what phenomenon. They're good guns though but there are pistols I've always liked better so I tend to choose something else and I strongly prefer the DA /SA pistols anyway. I like the pull and fire aspect but after that you're in a gunfight and the single action trigger is a big plus. The DA to SA being a hig hurdle is bullshit. However remembering to decock the pistol after you just smoked someone is something that gets no attention. Too many people shoot them at the range until they're empty and never use that function unless they carry it and load it up at home. So for anyone reading this who uses one fire off a however many rounds but leave some in the mag and get in the habit of decocking it. When I worked in LE I carried a Beretta 92G. I had a Bullmastiff ambush me out of nowhere from close distance. I barely got got my pistol out in time and 5 rds later it dropped. I was pretty shook up about it because this thing was over 150lbs. But out of habit I did decock my pistol afterwards although I don't remember doing it. A Deputy that worked in my area got into a shooting on a domestic call and when we all showed up after he had his SIG P226 in his holster with the hammer back still. Thank God for good duty holsters. Cool video man I enjoyed it and will defintly check out your other ones.

Glocks have enough slop to handle most abuse (don't come at me, it's intentional design) unless you're dipping it in wet sand. With that said, a platform that is readily susceptible to user induced malfunction (limp-wristing, etc) is still suffering a design flaw. There are many other striker fired semi-autos which are very hard to induce these sorts of malfunctions in because their design intentionally accommodates less than optimal technique. Glocks are still reliable handguns, but it's no secret that they're more prone to jamming up because of specifically poor technique than their competitors.

Good and safe experiment, good explanations, only one remark: The bullet and the weapon do not receive the same energy, but the same impulse, otherwise there will be "One shot, two killed."...9min:13s😉

I only own long guns and haven’t spent a ton of time with pistols, but it occurs to me that if you have to hold it so weakly that you aren’t controlling the muzzle flip, you aren’t safe to operate that firearm. Time for a revolver or perhaps don’t use a pistol of you can’t maintain control of it.

That's what I thought, pretty much. Dude didn't limp wrist, he pretty much "no wristed" the guns. Ngl, the fact that some guns apparently extract and cycle fine when fired basically without any frame support is a testament to their better design. Though even in a firefight with adrenaline and confusion, I struggle to see how one would fire one's pistol in this 90° angle and produce these misfeeds or extraction failures... Just shows how training with your firearm is just a necessity. For any gun.

@@metallkopf988 it seems pretty likely that if someone had hold of your arm/wrist that you could find yourself trying to shoot with compromised grip

LEO situations are rarely 1:1 to firing at a range. Hence the intro to the video. (There's 100's MORE bodycam KZbin videos of LEO Glock failures) If the firearm doesn't perform under the worst conditions, then it's not a good firearm. It's just that simple. It's the same reason US soldiers in Vietnam were known to envy the reliability of the northern AK on the battlefield, (especially when compared to the early war E1 variant which was despised for its frequent jamming,) even though the AK was 20 years older and significantly heavier. ON PAPER, the M16 and Glock are superior weapons. However, In stressful RL scenarios the older/heavier Soviet and Czech weapons have fewer failures. Let's pretend tomorrow the Chinese were invading and you were told you only had one handgun option... the Czech CZ or the Austrian Glock. Which one are you choosing to defend your homeland?
