You’ve decided that you’re interested in a career in global health or public health, but you’re faced with the age-old problem that you can’t apply for jobs in global health without “experience” and you can’t get the “experience” without having a job. In this video, I explore how to get field experience as a student, volunteer or intern. Getting field experience isn’t just about building up your CV or resume however. It’s about gaining real competencies in areas like cultural effectiveness and low resource decision making. Working and learning in the field means getting involved with any number of activities that might include supporting front line health care, or working on a local health promotion campaign, or getting physical and helping dig a well or build a clinic, or working in an office helping the local authority plan a new service. Public health is about getting involved.
In this video I talk about firstly, what field experience is, secondly, ensuring that you and the communities that you work with are safe, and finally, how to find the right field experience for you.
This video was created with support from Child Family Health International (CFHI). CFHI provides community-based global health education programs for students and institutions. Their unique model fosters reciprocal partnerships and empowerment in local communities, transforming perspectives about self, healing and global citizenship. Learn more about CFHI at: www.cfhi.org
In the video I talk about Fair-Trade Learning - here is the URL: compact.org/ftl/

Hi Dr Greg, really love your videos! Just wondering if you had thoughts on the organisation WorkTheWorld? Planning to do a medical placement with them over the next year or two.

Hey, Greg! I'm loving all of your videos! I'm extremely interested in working in Public Health. The areas I'm most interested in is infectious diseases and global health. I'm going to be working towards a bachelors degree in the fall but I can't decide if I should go for a degree in Nursing or Public Health. I find the public health courses more interesting but a lot of people say it's hard to find jobs with a BPH degree. Do you have any advice?

@@gregmartin actually the settings here are suitable here to take the steps you recommended. I took the first step as I got hired as a program officer in an NGO working in a war affected region in Sudan namely Darfur region. I'm a medical doctor pursuing a career in public health. I'm one of your intimate followers Dr. Greg. I wish I can get to a way to contact you and consult you more.

35 years ago I set out to get field experience. Even two successful Elimination programs later I never managed to get into the hallowed portals of the big bosses of the Public Health. It's still villages and small towns for me. Can anyone get me out of here? Dr. Indranath Banerjee

I understand your frustration Dr Banerjee. While I can't address it here in the KZbin comments, I do have a number of videos on global health careers that deal with issues like how to get consulting work (which is often an easy way into organisations like the WHO). Hope that helps. Good luck.

Last video 4 Months ago, please create a video asap regarding the soon to be CONVID -19 Pandemic, and please elaborate in the video of methods to be used and stress the importance of the virus as people are oblivious to the situation and their idiocracy will cause them more then they could ever know...

Hi, Greg. This was such a great video. I am currently in the Graduate School application process. I am researching Global Health programs in Europe, specifically in Germany. Most of the programs I am interested in require a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in low income countries. I was hoping that you could give me some guidance regarding service opportunities. I checked out CFHI, and they have great short term volunteer programs, but I am looking for long term programs. Any advice would be super helpful and greatly appreciated.
