As a retired HVAC mechanic with 35 years of experience. I have one tip about foaming coil cleaners ...... always start at the bottom and work your way up. The reason being is that the run down of foaming cleaner can prevent proper penatration. If you start at the bottom and work you way UP..... You always have coils with NO FOAM IN THE WAY. JMO. WORKED FOR ME FOR 35 YEARS....LOL

@@diyhvacguy have you ever run into a TRANE with bottle brush fins.?? When I was a rookie. I had to call my boss and ask what to do. He told me that TRANE recommended removing the complete outer shell of the unit. Then, take your torch and burn off all that you can. Always being mindful of burning fins. Once that is done. Clean from the inside out. .... worked like a champ. Once you've burned the outside and cleaned from the inside out. You MAY have spray the outside and inside and clean again. Your professional eyes can tell if you've done a good job. Pain in the hindparts... but it works.

This is no joke. My unit is 4 years old. Cooled my house like a champ the first 2 summers.. The 3rd Summer it struggled mightily to keep the temp below 80. Nothing changed, same ole house, I thought maybe it was just a hot summer. I had an A/C guy come out to check on it before the spring and he was like everything is good but you need to clean this unit its dirty. Now I couldn't actually see any dirt on it for me to call it dirty but he explained "I've since verified online" that the smallest amount of dirt/dust on the coils can change the efficiency of any unit. After he left I cleaned my unit with simple green and could immediately tell a difference in the coldness of the air coming from my vents. I'd advise cleaning at least 2 times each summer in the south and maybe once in the winter.

A neighbour said her AC did not work very well any more, I took a look and it looked like some one had wrapped the condenser in a carpet, it was so plugged like i have never seen before!, i removed the cover (after the disconnect) and unwrapped the carpet of grass clippings, and washed it out thoroughly, Worked fine after that, told her to mow the lawn in the other direction instead of shooting it into a running condenser,

I used to work at a home warranty company, and while this is partially true, you would be surprised how much we've paid for customers who have read their service agreement and know when something is eligible or not before wasting everyone's time. This is going to also vary by who you are "protected" by of course.

My husband works as a plumber so he knows how to get around the maze of home warranties. One thing he always tells his customers is to buy the highest coverage. Almost always, the customer would think because they have a warranty that things are covered. Basic coverage, imo, definitely seems like a scam. Barely anything is covered in these instances. We have top tier and have actually gotten our money’s worth.
@tboneforreal

Yeah, I stopped using them because whenever I would look up the reviews of the companies they sent to fix stuff in my house they had terrible reviews and there were always issues. If the first company did a terrible job or didn't fix the problem and you want a different company you have to pay the service fee again. Better to just put that money to the side in an account for home maintenance and then you can use whomever you want.

Not sure if it's here but foam OUTSIDE and spray water from INSIDE. You want the debris to move in the opposite direction of airflow. Otherwise you tend to force material INTO the coil instead of out.

I use a foam cannon in the radiator of my bike several times a week, when I’m washing it, and have never had a problem. I also rinse it with my pressure washer, and haven’t bent a coil fin yet. You just have to be careful, not spray from the side, and not spray it too close. After a couple feet, the pressure has dissipated greatly, and the water is more atomized then it is a direct stream.

For an everyday homeowner, what’s your thoughts on the Nu-Calgon Triclean 2X Coil Cleaner vs the foam spray gun and concentrate? It’s about $25 on Amazon vs the $150 investment in the gun and foam concentrate. My coils aren’t overly dirty (that I can see) and while I’m sure the gun would be best, do you think the Triclean 2X is still better than just an aerosol foam cleaner in a can?

You dont even really need any cleaner. Buy a soft brush and brush the coil out first then rinse the coil out with a hose and nozzle spraying from the inside out. If you're using a nozzle with decently high pressure, take caution to spray head cuz if you spray it at an angle you can flatten the fins on the coil.

Since the unit inhales air the best water clean will be to push mold, pollen and dust OUT by spraying a hose from the inside with the top removed. The majority of the soap should be outside...but the majority of first attack rinse should be from the inside....then spray off the outside. Some units give you little or no slack in the upper fan wires, so you may only be able to get a lift with a helper unless you remove the fan from the cover...a bit of a pain for a 15 minute job...and more chance to screw up. In that case a hand holding a hose nozzle is all you can easily get inside. Small dish soap squirt bottle with 50:50 dillution also does a great job of getting soap into the coils...and thats basically free.

Evaporator coils, also called a-coils, seldom if ever need cleaning. They stay clean because the air is filtered and the wet coil self rinses. That's why there isn't easy access to the evap coil in most installations.

@@johnwilcox4078 that would be a 2 part system . My mistake for not being clear . I was referring to a Goodman all in one package system . I always clean from the inside out. The Fan sucks inward and up. I blow out from the inside with compressed air first. Then hose from the inside out, then apply coil cleaner in the inside and spray water outward. Yes, you have to remove the fan but it gives you a better result and better cooling. I do this once at the beginning of each season. Then once per month, just use water to keep coils clean. TIP: when cutting grass or weed whacking, turn your unit off until your finished working around it. If it's running, it'll suck all that crap up into your coils.......save yourself a headache, turn it off until your done.

1st it’s a double row coil so by washing it from the outside in all that happened was packing the dirt between the two coils. 2nd all that cleaner trapped between the two coils is going to start deteriorating the aluminum and turn it to dust. 38 years of doing HVAC putting coil cleaner on a condenser coil is a big no no.

Watch the video that shows a dirty condenser I uploaded a couple weeks ago. It shows this same exact coil, zero stuff in the middle when I split the coils. So I don’t necessarily agree. And with a double coil the water will do nothing from the inside.
