This is great advice for private sector. Government on the other hand they aint trying hear this, they require certifications for many jobs, they are written into contracts and employers cant afford to look at you if you dont have them.

Man Boyd, I watch your videos all the time, I work in manufacturing as a machine operator with a two year business degree and everyone is telling me this wouldn’t work for me because I have no IT experience at all. Not even getting a cert would help, plus I just turned 43, so I do feel discouraged. I would love to make the transition though, or at least try. I do love hearing your messages though bro, keep it up.👍🏾

I’m going to keep it real. I got my first IT job without any experience or any big company certification. Yes I got lucky and yes it was perfect timing but I suggest to look for IT Field Tech jobs. It’s Damm near impossible to getting into cyber without any experience or certs.

Age is nothing but a number. You can do whatever you set your mind to. It's the mindset that makes all the difference. People will often tell you can't because they can't achieve their own dreams. I know people who are 50+ and still trying to acquire certs and begin a new career.

Look into forensic Data recovery. A friend has been telling me for years to take a Cisco course that teaches you how to run software. It's a specialty field that pays big bucks.

GRC may be the future of cybersecurity but definitely information security roles. Wish I knew this before I got several certifications but I learned and adapted to become a compliance specialist. The interview prep has to be on point and I agree wholeheartedly that soft skills is more important in GRC so I read more books and listening to Ted talks.

The main reason to have certification is for screening purpose. And you have to demonstrate your skills and knowledge during interview and real day to day responsibility. My question for you, when you say xyber security fields, lets say if there is a project manager guy who works for a cyber security firm, are you considered him as a cyber security professional !?

It’s simple knowledge is everything . If you know a lot you’ll be good . Problem is just getting your foot in the door. Knowing someone , joining mentee programs etc will get you there

So pretty much while I'm working get as many cert, and find ways to get hands on experience to get in at amount I can maintain my living to replace my current job. As a tech/security professional over 20 years what you're saying sounds good on paper but not in practice. The word itself of cybersecurity implies technical expertise and experience. If you're a person in this industry whether doing the work, analyzing the work, dealing with people, logistics, compliance, etc. you require specific trainings and experience in this field. Not to mention the ability to get a security clearance and continually upgrading your skill sets. It's not us old hats gate keeping its just the facts of the buisness.

6:08 "May be recuter will call you". That's all. Without it no chances to get job. (if you do not have effective networking connections). So certificate increases your chances.

Sound good, but reality doesn’t work like that, to get good salary you have to have some sort of certificates.

Nah certificates might be required for entry level roles, so most roles advertised no mention of certs. I think demonstrating at the interview you can do the job is what gets a good salary.

I am in telecom and have been selling a lot of 3rd party cyber products. I have on the job training, but how can I pivot to a sales engineering role. A consultant “technical overlay” added with my sales background. I am currently taking my google cert now but am I wasting my time?
