I heard a very good analogy about Josh and John. John is like Jenny from Forrest Gump, he leaves when he wants and comes back when he wants. Which sucks because Josh was really faithful to the fans (playing OHM and underrated songs) but as soon as John comes back, Josh gets kicked out because its John. It still doesn't make sense they didn't keep Josh to have 2 guitarists to play songs where the guitars overlap like Turn It Again. (TL;DR) I really hope Josh gets alot more love because he really deserves it because of all the work he did for the fans and for Im With You (Im Beside You) and The Getaway.

You see, I’m the exact opposite on the Klinghoffer albums. I thought the first one was boring and I never have a desire to go back to it. But the Getaway? I vibe with it. And for me it’s gotten better with time, maybe because I’ve been in a mellow mood the past few years. I know it’s not for everyone but it sure beat I’m With You for me. But hard agree on the rest of the video, especially One Hot Minute. Truly an underappreciated gem, I love that one.

I've seen a bio video about Josh Klinghoffer which explained that before joining the band as a full-time member Josh has never been much of a solo guitarist, he usually was on a supporting role. So he learned to be a solo guitarist as the time went on. That could explain why he was much more flashy on live shows than LPs. I am among those who think that the band should not have kicked him out so abruptly. After all, they were already working on a third album with Josh when John decided to return again. I think the Peppers could have handled this situation better. And regarding I Am With You - I've heard that from the production perspective Josh's guitar was deliberately pushed back in the mix. And yes, I realize I come a few months too late with this comment.

"One Hot Minute" is honestly among my personal favorites because you can just tell they really went for broke there and hemorrhaged everything on the line. I fucking respect that and it made for an album that, while by no means their most consistent, is nonetheless an album you always notice something different everytime you listen to it and is as visceral as Kiedis ever got. The Navarro era was short-lived and chaotic, but it produced some of their absolute best music in my view. =) I also totally agree with you on "Stadium Arcadium" as a whole, though I think "Desecration Smile" and "Snow (Hey Oh)" are two of the best individual songs they've ever recorded both lyrically and in tone, and "Dani California" is also a tanatlizing delight. =) Amazing work as always, Crash! =D

OHM is their best in my opinion, along with Californication. ”Visceral” is a very good description of it, which may be why I love it so much.
@warborn_inc.2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Ive seen the Chili's on eveey tour since 87. Seen them with 5 guitarists and hands down the OHM tour and the early dates on the BSSM tour (before John checked out mentally) were the 2 best shows by a HUGE margin. OHM is also the last album where the band had any Teeth. I love John and ultimately I do think he belongs in the band...but all the people who throw shade at OHM are clueless. Not to mention...anyone who was actually around and old enough to remember...that album got great reviews when it came out...had 2 huge hits that were constantly on the radio (Aeroplane and My Friends) and it wasnt until the internet evolved and Frusciante returned that people started trash talking this album. I prefer Navarro in Janes...and John with the Chili's but to dismiss OHM is a massive mistake. One Big Mob, Transcending, Shallow be thy Game, Warped and Falling into Grace (Not to mention the B sides Stretch and Lets make Evil) absolutely crush anything they have done since. They have a very safe sound now. Its all pretty much mid tempo semi mellow semi sweet rock songs. Thèy haven't been "Red Hot" since 95. They are more like the Mild Green Chili Peppers at this point (and yes I know 3 of the members are or will be 60 this year and John is 52...and sure people mellow with age)...still my point stands. OHM is second only to BSSM in my opinion
@laurisaarinen11262 жыл бұрын
I love OHM, my second favorite after BSSM, but yeah... Chaotic is a great word to describe it. But that's no surprise with the band being under some dark clouds because of John, and also where Dave comes from... Jane's Addiction was pure chaos. Although it's my all time favorite band. There's a reason they can never stay together for more than few years and then disband again going to do solo records or other projects. But, for that band the chaotic tension is probably what made them so great. For the Peppers, it's a whole different vibe, it's more about the bond of friendship.

This was a really great deep dive into the band. I am definitely in the camp that loves The Getaway but thinks I’m With You is pretty boring. I always try to get myself more into it but I think Flea’s bass driving so hard over the more modern Peppers sound just doesn’t mesh with me like it does on their older stuff (which is also the problem I have with a lot of the tracks on the new album). I do wish you had brought up I’m Beside You though, I think that is the real place where Josh shines with the band and I’d have it ranked in the must hear category over Mother’s Milk. Just a really solid collection of songs and really interesting to hear Josh speak on it in a few interviews as if it is a third real album made with him in the band. It is just such a shame it was only released as a whole in such a limited vinyl run, but I will always stand behind it being in the upper half of their discography in terms of quality.

Really good guide for newbies, well done! I do feel the need to defend Josh here. First off, I'm a HUGE fan of John, he's in my top 5 favourite guitarists of all time but I think Josh is the ONLY guitarist that could have possibly held the Chili's together for the decade that John left. I'm not a big fan of "I'm with you" outside a couple of tracks, but I think "The Getaway" is one of the Chili's best albums! (see my other comment for my top 5 RHCP albums) It's a gorgeous album with some beautiful guitar work. I don't understand why people dunk on Josh, I really genuinely believe he deserves massive respect for being the glue that held them together. If I was to criticise Josh, it would be that he doesn't always fit the vibe of the band. He's 10 years younger than John and 17 years younger than Anthony! So that's my belief.

I have a few points of disagreement: 1. You were remiss in talking about how the sound quality on the original release of Caifornication was horrid due to the loudness wars 2. Californications sound was due to John not having played much guitar in years prior and having a highly minimalistic approach with Anthony being sober as well 3. By the way was largely driven by John wanting to be experimental. I’ve long said that Fleas comfort zone is something the band gets stuck in and he’s a reactive player to the guitarist. He struggled with Dave as he wasn’t that type of guitarist. Even Josh has said that he was limited in what he could do in the band. My belief is that John was creative enough for flea to bounce off
