How To Get Modal Sounds Using Just The Major Scale

Hello and welcome to the stocksbridge guitar tech channel.
In today's video I show you how to get modal sounds using just the Major scale. Understanding modes doesn't have to be complicated. You can get all the modal sounds using just the Major scale. Follow along to learn this simple hack to unlock the mysterious modes.

This is such a handy way of working out what scale to play over a chord to get the mode you want. For years (decades, in fact), every time I asked about modes, I got the answer, "You start on the third/fourth/fifth (etc.) note of the scale." I never understood the answer, because I thought what people meant was 'the first note you play determines which mode you're in', which made no sense. Finally, someone showed me basically what you demonstrated here, and the light turned on!

And by the way, what is the "backing track" you are playing over? Sounds nice, is it simply a keyboard holding a chord? I would love to find one to play over. Cheers!

Hi again, it's an SG Special 120th Anniversary model.

Yes it's just a keyboard pad sound played on my Korg Triton LE. There are tons of backing tracks that you can download on KZbin and other places to play over - just search "backing tracks for guitar" or something similar.
