Refreshing to hear your take on the Ford vs Chev vs Chrysler attitudes. I’ve worked as an Engineer for both GM and Ford for over 20 years. I like them both, and as you say each have their advantages and disadvantages. I prefer to simply respect the work that the guys before me did, and hopefully in years to come, the new generation of engineers can respect what I have done. You earned a subscription sir.

Well said, I'm a Ford guy because I drive a Ford, but like what you said not being biased when I see a nice Chevy or Hemi I take my hat off to see what people can do to all makes and models, respect is given to all who build engines no matter what brand. Each to their own but the fundamentals of building an engine is all the same no matter what you build they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

So what do you think about rear ends? I chose to swap out a 10 bolt diff in a 1964 Chevelle SS Malibu Convertible(1100 made) with a narrowed and tweaked 9" Ford diff. The car was lowered with wide 16" front and 19" rear wheels stuffed in the fender wells. 4 wheel power disk brakes, Power steering and much more. Handled like a smaller car. The customer loved it.

When I see a beautiful ford car hot rodded with a bowtie it makes me turn my attention somewhere else. Sure it's got performance but the nostalgia is gone. Just a thanks from up north in Alberta, Canada. I retired from my career as an automotive mechanic probably 10 years ago. I have built my share of engines ranging from air cooled VWs to British sports cars. Having said that, I have learned so much about engines and building engines from you. Your videos are easy to understand and packed with stuff I never ever thought of. Pretty humbling for a grizzled old guy like me. As far as brand loyalty, I have none. As you said, every engine has it's strengths and weaknesses. I do have a soft spot for the Chrysler leaning tower of power though and hope to see one on your channel one day. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and your efforts to educate us all.

Had a step father that built his 289 to push 504 HP@ 9,000 rpm in his 67 Shelby GT350. They Black flagged him at Daytona, swore he was running a 427 super cobrajet, because he was hitting 210 on the back stretch, and a lap speed of 167.86 mph. His tech tear down proved he was clean and legit. Got Mech of the year for that one. Nobody was yelling put a Chevy in it. I built a 302 in the Maine winter that ran like a raped ape. That thing loved breaking hearts, topped out around 165. Went from Torrance to LaMesa in one hour, once. Usually a 3 hour trip at the speed limit. Flat lifters. I certainly appreciate running into this video as you have enlightened me on a critical fact of modern lubrication.

The rivalry is exactly what you said, marketing hype to sell product. I came here to learn a platform I'm not as familiar with because I'm a car guy, not a brand guy. Ironically most of the brand loyalists I know can't change their own spark plugs or oil. I want some simple, budget upgrades for a 302 and this build is a perfect fit. The engine I have runs great but could use a bit more go. Reconditioned junkyard heads and a mild cam are right on target with the budget and look for this project. Thanks for sharing a great recipe.

I just bought a 5.0 Ford engine that may replace the 289 in my Comet. I've been trying to decide about several things including whether to bore or not. This engine has not been bored yet and I could just leave it alone. After listening to this again I think it will be "30 over". I just finished disassembling the block and getting it ready for the machine shop and had several questions which you answered that I needed to know before I go. I've been around old cars almost all of my life but I've never been inside an engine. I'm 78 now and can now afford to do it with both time and money. THANKS!

your statement about the engine is safe if you're using a roller cam, because of the lack of zddp wear additive, i have been using pennzoil since the mid 70's, my last engine build was destroyed because pennzoil took the wear additive out. the 350 chevy engine was completely rebuilt by my machine shop that i have been using since the early 80's. the engine had a zz-4 roller set up, the only part that survived. cam bearings wiped out, rod and main bearings were completely wiped out in 5,000 miles, asked pennzoil what would have caused this problem after too many years of problem free use of their oil, their only response is the wear additive was removed, they informed me that shell rosella, vavoline, pennzoil 50w racing oil as well as a few others still have the zddp, no apologies!i love your vedios

SOLD! LOVE your comment about brand loyalty. Hell, I’m a “Mopar or No Car” guy (thanks for the praise given to the 383 and Uncle Tony) but a person who lends no respect to the products of other manufacturers is an ignoramus. I want to build one of these Small Block Fords now. Make it a family thing since my older, hippie era brother is a FoMoCo fan. And sure, maybe the LS is the greatest Detroit engine of all time. I’d even make that argument, but it’s maddening as a Mopar guy with a 70’ Charger R/T to have BowTie guys constantly tell me I can make it better by dropping an LS in it. Ummm. Guys. The 440 doesn’t exactly suck, and guess what? It came with the car.

There is nothing better than going to an event and seeing everything displayed with ALL of the owners beaming with pride and to compliment them on their rides, all you see are smiles after smiles!!! That said, I couldn't agree more regarding "BRAND LOYALTY" I definitely appreciate your posting this video as I did not know about the components needed in "old oil" to run flat tappet cams. As a side note, I am the proud owner of a "NEW TO ME" 1970 R/T Challenger with a 383 Magnum, pistol grip 4speed. This being a numbers matching car, I am looking for another 383 or even a 440 to drop in so I can enjoy the car while in my possession, then to drop the original back in at a later date, but surely thinking I should break this baby open to do an inspection, especially the bottom end, like you did with Charlie's 289, and go so far as to upgrade and put a roller cam back in upon reassembly! I think Iheard you say you might sell the 383 that is on the stand? If not, what about the one tucked away on the floor? Are they both "MAGNUM" engines? I'd really like to speak with you over the phone if your okay with that, or maybe "messenger" or email... My email is: razorray57@gmail.com Be great to touch base as you are a good source for information and could help an old guy out here. Take care, Razor!

I absolutely agree and so glad to hear an engine builder point out the fact that when it comes to the loudest mouthed rivalry shit talkers, are amateurs. Their only experience they go on is because that's what daddy drove. The fact is, learning how to hear what your vehicle is telling you. And are you looking for longevity or a short high? And does your daddy own a junk yard or parts store?

Guess I made a mistake, but I put the flat tappet cam back in my 351w pick up.I used the break in lube with no issue.Changed the oil after break in.I only use valvoline high zinc oil.Changed it after 500 miles then again after a 1000 miles.I change the oil around 1500 after that.I don't put a lot of miles on the motor it's really more of time between oil changes. I agree with the oil issue.My 87 truck had 108,000 miles on it when I pulled the motor.The lifters were stuck the bearings were completely worn out the cylinders had grooves at the top and the whole motor had lots of carbon buildup. Believe me or not the cam was in really good shape. I had the crank turned .10 thousands and bored .060 over. I removed the exhaust system and replaced with dual exhaust with no catalytic converter. My reason for not switching to a roller lifter system comes down to cost.That upgrade added up to around a $ 800 bucks. It's a pick up truck not a hot rod. That money saved covered my machine shop bill and some gt40 heads. If you can follow directions breaking in a cam isn't the end of the world. Make sure the motor is well primed and timing is close for a quick start up. If it doesn't start quickly STOP. Cranking it over and over will do extreme damage. So if your engine builder won't touch it go find one that will. I'm not rich 800 hundred bucks is a lot of money to me.

If you still drive something with a flat tappet cam Lucas ZDDP Plus additive is available in just about all real parts houses. It’s about $14 a bottle and contains enough ZDDP and detergents (to keep the additional zinc in suspension), in any off the shelf oil . I have a 1995 K2500 with a 5.7 flat tappet cam in it. It runs like a top so I’m not tearing it down to put a roller cam in it. The truck is unusually clean so I intend to keep it right on.

Debating swapping in an older 74 5.8 that I rebuilt 20 years ago with World Products SR Torquer heads and a Performer RPM intake or maybe just pulling them off and putting them on the engine that’s currently in it since it’s pretty low mileage. I want to convert it to a roller cam after research it’s quite a bit cheaper than I thought. Possibly install a Sniper efi and scrap the speed density. Eyeing a Lunati 20350612 cam. One thing I'm pretty stunned about is the aftermarket parts availability for Ford motors. Back in the day there was 10x as many Chevy parts available. I mean, damn, stroker kits for a 390 off the shelf! Just amazing. OK Question, would like some advice on how to choose a torque converter for a street rod. That's one thing I never really understood. I had a C-6 on my 351, stock converter, always wondered if I should have replaced it. Carry on!

the convertor depend on the Camshaft
@misters28374 жыл бұрын
TCI has a tech line IIRC...but like the man said it depends on how high the engine idles (which is a function of cam) and how you are gonna use it...Strip Cars use Higher Stall "looser" converter than Street cars, just to get the engine nearer to powerband....Also Say you have a Slightly Souped up 302 with a 2000rpm stall converter...That same converter behind a Slightly Souped up 460 will stall at 2500 or more...Just because the Bigger engine makes MORE Torque at the 2000-2500 RPM range, therefore capable of "slipping" the converter a little faster...some claim a "tighter" converter is slightly more efficient at hwy speeds... I have heard of guys trying to get better MPG with C6's in cars by installing Diesel Converters behind GAS engines...I wouldn't recommend that, certainly there is a performance penalty.

I’ve noticed a lot of black material is often on the bottom of the oil container. Is that the zinc? I often would give a shake before using.

Yes it takes 3 or 4 oil changes to get the moly Graphite out don't worry its a lube

Fords are very reliable and the architecture is very strong I don't just like Fords I am a big Fan of Chevy's and Mopar's as well when you encounter people who swear by one brand and hate on the other ones you are dealing with inexperience they simply don't know what they are talking about All three of the American Car makers put out good products and with after market parts and mods you can improve them all

Love the vids. Straight forward and doesn't take bullshit from anyone. A true car guy appreciates everything with 4 wheels and an engine, no matter what the letters on the hood say.

At around 19min in video you talk about the "ford vs chevy vs Mopar guys". I spent 30 years in the auto repair industry. It's funny you said almost exactly what I've been saying too. Advertising has been so effective over the years. People even get tattooed with brand logo. I had a painter once who named his little girl "Chevelle ". Brilliant advertising, in my opinion....

Right, Right, Right and RIGHT!!! The whole Video I agree with. And.... You have convinced me that if I can get another Mustang, even a Fox or early SN95, I'm LOOKING for an Explorer 5.0 to build for it. I believe that while the Mustangs were 200-225hp stock... The Explorer was 240!! And strangely, I never bothered to figure out WHY. My Friends and I have always had friendly Brand rivalries... but have NEVER been rude or disrespectful. Buddy, you and I come from an entirely different World. We didn't get Trophies for just showing up, "exceptionalism" was viewed as a GOAL, not a social disease like kids today think. And we understood RESPECT. Nearly DOA these days. I Pray that the NEXT Generation can fix this MESS. The really sad thing - it's OUR FAULT! WE raised this Generation. Not me personally and I'm sure not you, but our Generation failed. 😖 Wishing you and your Family the most Joyous of Holiday Seasons and an awesome 2021!!! The Bar is pathetically LOW from 2020, so we might be OK 👌 Carmine ✈🚂🚙

Don't like to brag (but will anyway, lol), but check out the good stuff Ford sent the 'ole 302w off this mortal coil with, in my AUSSIE Falcon XR8 220kw ... that's 295hp direct from the Factory ! Google ... Ford fights back with XR8 Go Auto ... to get the juicy details of the hottest factory Ford 302w ever made; all Hand Built, signed by the engine builder and hot tested too !!

Glad to hear you checking the haters.. I love Fords.. I like Chevy and MoPars.. I can appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of all the different engines.. I just like original swaps.. Ford for Ford.. Chevy for Chevy.. Etc.. Great videos.. I am following then all!! LOL

What ever happened to the 351m build I've got a gran torino and I'm keeping it stock with a 400 but watching your build was giving me pointers, I enjoyed your GMC V6 build that engine was a great engine .

The 289 won lots of endurance racing back in the day with carol Shelby and others iam a chevy guy but I love small block fords and especially the boss 351 and 302 . I also love big block mopars and buick 455 engines no matter what I fix during the day as a auto tech at a large auction it comes down to maintaining the vehicle

I think the best feature of the SBF is the overall size. They are very compact and will fit in lots of applications. Oh, and it’s easy to change the spark plugs!

If you see this or someone else do you know the difference in the retrofit roller lifters and factory roller lifters right off the top of your head
@Myvintageiron75123 жыл бұрын
The the retro fit has a tie bar connecting a set of two lifters together the factory lifters do not

Great video. Some of the early 289 motors had the original 5-bolt bell housing pattern (like 221 and 260 v8’s). That went away in mid ‘64 (I think).Otherwise the modern 5.0 is a drop in replacement for the 289-302 motors. The 5.0 motors have a reputation for cracking at high HP...is that a real issue? What HP level can these salvage yard blocks take without failure?

The trick with the 302s, is to keep rpms below 6k, and have a good balance on the engine. Keep an eye on the balancer if you're running the 50 oz crank. That said they'll run 500whp and a bit more no problem. Just have a safe tune.
@arkhsm2 жыл бұрын
@@pimpovic2 Richard Holdener did a segment on KZbin about that, and he did real hard driving in his supercharged 302w Fox 'stang back in the late '80s in the 500 horse zone (Silver State Challenge, flat out for miles, for instance) !!

I have an 89 F150, nice sheet metal and I suspect lowish miles. I feel like pulling it to redo seals and gaskets. What suggestions could you make to perk it up a little for daily driving, without breaking the bank? (I say as I go down the rabbit hole).

I have an old 251 (Splitfire) in my 51’ Chrysler and every oil change I use the STP ZDDP additive. Fingers crossed it lasts.
@Myvintageiron75124 жыл бұрын
it will be fine if the cam ran during the era where the oil actually had ZDDP then it was exposéd to it for years and has a bunch imbedded in the lobes but you on the right track keep using it

Great information! I appreciate your channel. I’ve got a 89 F150. I believe it’s a roller block with a flat tapper cam and lifters. Can I just install the late model roller cam, lifters etc or do I need to get the high dollar conversion lifters? Thanks in advance.
