Thank you so much for this. I have been crocheting for over 40 years and my mom tried to explain this to me all those years ago, but it never made sense to me ( maybe because i was a hard headed teenager at the time). Your clear, simple and thorough explanation has just changed my crochet life. You are the BEST!

Thank you! I've recently started designing my own blanket patterns and this really helps when trying to include chain counts for larger sizes. I typically will make a baby blanket size because they are faster and I've had a few people ask me how many chains for a larger size. This is a great help!

Thanks so much, this was really helpful. Would this technique be done similarly to figure out how many stitches in a starting chain are needed in Tunisian crochet or would a stitch gauge be better with the stitch used for the pattern?? Thanks 😊😊

Would this measurement technique be the same for dizing hats/beanies as well?

I hate counting stitches so I make a chain long as I want. Then I normally do an edge I leave the extra chains hanging and crochet over it. Other times I will take out the extra stitches that hang over.
