I have a couple q’s for anyone who may be able to answer. Some background - I was put on thyroid meds at a young age, early 20s- never looked at lab results just accepted the diagnosis. I had been under extreme stress at the time. My questions are: - can being put on thyroid meds cause dependency / cause an unstable thyroid to get worse without meds? - can someone who’s truly hypothyroid get off safely and in which cases? - does levothyroxine have other negative side effects on the body/mind?

So, I decided to keep going to see how I feel. I'm a week in, so far, so good. I get blood-work in about another week, so I'm interested in seeing what it says. Either I was totally sleep deprived, or ??? I feel much more calm.

I want to wean off my desiccated thyroid 15 mg alternating with 30 mg. Been taking thyroid meds for 17 years. 13 years ago I lost 100 lbs and by the Grace of God I've kept it off. I've had hair loss on and off over the years. Tested negative multiple times for antibodies so not believed to be caused by Hashimoto's. I had also tested Iodine (both blood and urine testing) multiple times all Low 30's. No practitioners ever addressed the low iodine. On my own I finally began using a Kelp seasoning on my food and the last time Iodine was checked in 2018 it was High at 108. I have over the years felt like I might have had some fleeting bouts of 'hyper' at times. I stopped going to conventional endocrinology doctors because they were not addressing my concerns, no interested in the root cause or providing any healing. I follow neurosurgeon and health educator, Dr. Jack Kruse MD and I'd read on his Optimal Health Forum of folks using red light therapy for healing their hypothyroidism. So was nice to see your comment that you are using Red Light Therapy.....wondering what device you use for that? and wondering what you mean by super-clean diet? I work on my diet a lot. I have Vegetarian Tyrosine 480 mg in capsules on hand from Food Research a Brand that is 100% Food but I'm not sure how and when to take it. Suggested use on their web site says 1-6 capsules per day. I got it and several of their other thyroid supplements to prepare to taper off my desiccated thyroid prescription. Wondering if that compares to your Tyrosine dose? If you see my reply please let me know. www.buyfoodresearch.com/collections/l-tyrosine/products/vegetarian-tyrosinetweek

I was in 2013 administered by my general doc to take thyroid hormone based only on thyriod test and on his imperssion regarding my health condition . I felt immidiately that it improved my condition Because my heart was already on a brink of colapse and I was too. Only after I've done USG check of thyroid I realized that I have thyroid gland half size of normal . Since I started hormone I started to live normal life like never before. For previous 50 years as I can remember I used to tell that any heat is better than not enough. I enjoyed outside heat in tropical sun in 35C deg . I could wear thick winter sweeter in hot sunny day. Now I care rather to keep dressed not too much - because heat is unbareable for me and I have much more energy than 20 years ago. Tried how would it go without medication and within 3 days felt so bad that was forced to go back. It was my test and I am not planing blood test because one of such tests resulted in damage of my arm vein and results in numbers are so clear as inside feeling.

For several years now I have been taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine every morning. Like clockwork I would feel very sped up and sweat heavily. I first thought it was just menopause symptoms. My doctor at that time didn't think it was caused by my medication. So I continued taking it at the prescribed dose. Over time I began to feel very edgy and easily aggitated . finally I saw another article about people being overprescribed so I cut my pills in half and continued at the lower dose. The symptoms began to lessen over the course of a few weeks but not gone completely. So I began experimenting with not taking it at all. I feel way calmer than I have in years. I do intend to discuss this finding with my new doctor (the other one retired)

Good for you. After my first sign on a routine bloodwork, my Dr. said "let's watch it" and didn't say much more, other than, if it doesn't self-correct, she can prescribe something. So, I looked into diet. Stopped all gluten, all refined sugars, see oils, soy and corn products. I started feeling pretty good and my number got slightly better but still FELT much better. I told my Doc about my diet changes, she just stared at me, like "ok that's good but..." Why don't they ever care about that? Anyway, I digress...she right there and then prescribed me 88 mgs of synthroid. Just a week ago I took one, morning, empty stomach as it said. 15 mins later, my heart was palpitating so fast, I was shaking and had to lay down...other than this sluggish thyroid...I am fit, 56, it freaked me out, it didn't really go...it lasted on and off all day and super anxiety feeling. I stopped, didn't take another and of course it's been the holidays just now...I feel like I don't even want to tell her. lol I'm not taking that no way. I have never felt like that in my life...and that cannot be good. Thanks for writing what you did..because I hadn't found anyone saying that...I wish you great things with your new Dr. Happy 2024!

I turn 57 today…and if I have to pay to play, so be it, I understand it’s a privilege, and believe me I am grateful to have it. But I’m not being left to twist out here…I’d rather be anywhere but in Canada rn and Canadians will Know what I say is true. WE ARE BROKEN. I do hope things workout for you. I did end up having to take my thyroid rx . I do feel alot better these days. Sometimes you gotta take the good with the bad. All medications come with side effects unfortunately but sometimes we have to weigh in on the consequences if we don't take them. Thyroid is a hormone and does regulate our systems. I developed very high blood pressure when i wasn't taking it. Turns I need to take it whether I like it or not. My blood pressure is back in safe limits now. Maybe try the lower dose. You were probably overprescribed the first time. An endocrinologist is your best course of action. Anyway I hope you find the right answers in your case and get the right treatment.@@daphnespiderman

Dangerous to do that since your thyroid is gone. It could cause death, you are in a position where you NEED THYROID REPLACEMENT FOR LIFE. Please do not risk your health like that. I was diagnosed years ago, as hyper/hypo. medication was not given to me at that time. When I moved to Florida, I had an incident where I got a slight hit to my side temple. The clinic took my lab work and said I was hypo thyroid ang prescribed levothyroxine. I took that for a while, I seemed to gain weight. Then I tryied Synthroid, I did not like the way I felt on that. So I ended up trying Armour thyroid, and have been on that ever since. I do not or never had much of the symptoms of hypo thyroid. I do not get cold, and most of the time I am always warm and do not like the heat. I am not tired except for when I go to work and wake at 3am to get ready. My lab work I don't understand, my doctor just resigned. I am not sure, but I do not think I need to be on this even though I have taken it for a long time , I think it made me gain weight actually. The levothroid did.

My TSH was 207 after first child in 1983. Been on meds ever since. I felt fine but doc insisted. Haven’t felt well since taking med and even had an overdose which gave me a storm and left me with Menierres ear. Can I really get off? I went off for a month before the overdose in 1990. TSH was 17 but I felt great.

Many of Dr Westin Child's commenters claim they now feel much better after following his protocol...some say nothing ever changed for them. He doesn't recommend anyone stop their current thyroid med on beginning his program, & tells everyone they must continue to have their blood levels checked regularly as ordered by their own private physician. He doesn't take on any patients himself. He uses vitamins & what I call thyroid "boosters". Some claim they have been able to completely stop their thyroid med, but it doesn't work for everyone, & he openly admits that. I have hypothyroidism & took 100 mcg Levothyroxin when I started on his program & diet to clean up the gut. (I've also been diagnosed as prediabetic, & my glucose levels are now within normal on his program) I have experienced much more energy, less depression & brain fog, & have better ability to concentrate now. My Levothyroxin was reduced to 75 mcg by my private physician recently due to better blood levels. I've been on the program about 6 months now. I will admit I do not buy his products, as they are just too expensive for me. I go to my local healthfood store, & buy the best similar products that contain what he uses in his products.
